I don't know how it happened - I keep thinking back to see if I can figure out just what exactly made me do it......I just can't understand how it came to be.........

BUT

Satanus was actually the first thing I read in the Meg this month.

Ahead of a John Wagner PJ Maybe Dredd story.

(well, okay, for entirely selfish reasons I did flick through to see if I had made it into the small press section yet....it was not to be, maybe one day).

I am finding Satanus a fascinating ordeal, pehaps for all the wrong reasons, but fascinating nonetheless.

It is from the episode that he drew twice - but I think the first two pages (that this picture is from) were not lost - it was just the following 4 pages that were 'misplaced' and re-drawn.

The mystery of the clumsily drawn helmet continues.....

It looks like the kind of art amendment that they used to do in the old Eagle reprints - except they were usually done where a part of the drawing was missing - eg. the top of the helmet.
Strange it has been re-drawn here (it's ok in old Titan reprint).

Something very odd happened to the helmet on Dredd on the Case Files version.....not really sure why considering that it's all ok on the original.

Just a thought - I think you will need to either have this open to generic pictures (ie non specific month related) or you will need to find out who intends to enter and allocate months before hand/get people to declare a preference.

If you don't, then you are likely to end up with 20 pictures of Judge Dredd either shooting the Easter Bunny or arresting Santa (either of which might look strange for July).

It's a good competition idea.

The horror is finally slipping from my mind - must try to remember - starting to get very silly ideas.

Congratulations - and three hours is a good nights sleep!

Scott, to engage in a discussion you really must try and appreciate and consider other peoples point of view.

When I read a lot of your replies in this 'discussion' I canĂ¢??t help but picture someone with their hands over the ears mumbling 'nah, nah, nah - not listening'.

A considered response to a relatively large number of people challenging the points you have made would be to take a step back, consider all that has been said and perhaps reassess your argument.

I'm not saying that you should necessarily change your mind, just that you should consider the possibility that you may be wrong.

It is clearly documented here that Dredd's character has indeed mellowed considerably since his first story. This is not in doubt - it's in print in the progs and the various reprints.

The DeMarco incidents that I listed previously happened more than a decade ago.

10 Years prior to the DeMarco incidents I would probably agree that the Dredd featured may well have asked for the badge of any judge conducting a relationship (though this is debateable as I don't think it has ever happened - in all cases I remember the Judge(s) involved have compounded matters by actually breaking the law to cover their relationship).

In the 10 years leading up to DeMarco's activities Dredd has softened enough to overlook what in the past he considered failings.

He does this as he considers DeMarco an exceptional Judge.
Would 1977 Dredd have made an exception on these grounds? Perhaps not. 1977 Dredd would shoot you in the head for dropping a sweet wrapper.

And so, yet another 10 years has passed since he overlooked DeMarco's activities.
In this time, Dredd has got closer to his niece (as close as his character allows him to get anyway) and has had greatly increased family involvement with Dolman (who he recently bent regulations to help) and Rico.

These relationships were all established long before 'Origins'.

I am puzzled as to why anyone would think that Dredd's mindset would not have changed or relaxed still further during this time, especially as the general Judge conduct certainly appears to have relaxed in the same period.

Life experience has taught me that your views change. Age changes you, family changes you even more.

Dredd is not infallible - he has shown many failings in his duty as a Judge in the past.
As well as those mentioned previously on this thread, it should also be noted that he prioritised a personal relationship during Total War. Viennas safety was more important to him than upholding the law or helping other endangered citizens.

It would be hypocritical of modern Dredd to show complete condemnation of other Judges with relationships when he himself has conflicting links external to Justice Department.

Absolutely no disrespect intended, but you do give the impression of someone who has read the first 400 or so progs over and over again, but has then either chosen to ignore the following 22 years of Dredd development or skimmed it and took only what you wanted to.

It is also perhaps ill advised to post on a 2000AD forum claiming to be more of an expert on Dredd and his character development than others.

There really are a lot of people here who have a broad view of Dredd's development and a detailed knowledge spanning his full history.

Logan for one has an enyclopaedic knowledge of Dredd.
He and many others do not seem to have the same issues with Dredd's character development during 'Origins' as you appear to have.

Anyway, with that I bow out.

Thought I would post up some facts on the DeMarco incidents - just in case this argument starts rolling on again.

Dredd first pulls DeMarco for her relationship with another Judge in 'The Pit', Prog 990, telling her that 'Personal attachments can impair judgement, DeMarco, you know that.'
Dredd then suspends her until further notice.

...which happens to be Prog 992.

Dredd: 'We will never agree on this. You behaved foolishly and you wilfully contravined regulations'
DeMarco: 'Yes, sir.'
Dredd: 'However, I can't afford to lose a good judge and you are undoubtedly that. '
DeMarco is then fully reinstated.

Two years later in Prog 1101 and DeMarco is still very much in active duty (no joke intended)and is promoted to Chief of Sector 303.

Around 6 or 7 progs later DeMarco kisses Dredd.
Dredd, once again displaying tolerance for DeMarcos actions fails to report this incident but does tell DeMarco he is disappointed in her.

Six months later, in Prog 1132 - DeMarco is brought before Volt (due to Edgar's involvement)who tells her he is also disappointed in her behaviour.
Volt also admits to having feelings for people in the past.
Volt finds her guilty of unjudicial conduct (as DeMarco will not admit guilt or apologise) and demotes her back to street judge.

On the grounds that DeMarco feels she has not done any wrong, she hands in her badge.

This first DeMarco incident happened 11 years ago, the system seems to have become progressively more tolerant throughout that decade as has Dredd (as can be seen in many of the stories cited in previous posts - such as the story involving Rico's assignment to a sector house).

As for my opinion on this, as a thirty year Dredd reader - his behaviour seems entirely appropriate to me and completely in-keeping with the progression of Dredd's character (not to mention that of a man who is getting older and wiser).

Personally, I think the writing of late has been thought provoking and intelligent and I find myself looking forward to my weekly Dredd more and more. The first episode in the mutant camp was excellent.

Back in the 80's I loved watching robot-Dredd shooting perps and throwing out one-liners - but I'm not ten anymore and I'm glad the character has matured with me.

Am I one of the only people who likes having Robo-Hunter back in the prog, even if Gibson's art is a little slap-dash?

Nope - I like seeing it back as well.
I'm still giving it a chance to find it's feet, though perhaps I am more forgiving of it as it is an old-school collaboration.

I think it provides a nice change of pace from some of the other more serious content.

I loved Diceman and got all five issues.
My own favourite was the Torquemada tale by Bryan Talbot.
