I guess the Norts are objecting to the London mayoral result.

Off Topic / A couple of band vids I helped with
21 May, 2008, 07:23:50 PM
Sorry for the gratuitous self-pimpage, but I volunteered to help film a couple of videos for some friends in a local band.

They lucked out and managed to get free hire of a nice venue at Hoxton Hall and we shot both songs from two cameras with multiple takes (so there are a few glaring continuity errors :) )

It gave my mate Rob plenty to edit with anyway.

We started off shooting a lot of tripod stuff to get coverage, but got a bit more relaxed as the day went on  - some of the handheld stuff is OK, other bits are a bit rough...

Still, it was good fun and something I hadn't tried before.

Sorry about the YouTube quality, but it was done for DVDs to send to people.

I'd just be interested to hear what people think

Cheers,

Steve

I've not tried it myself yet, but there's a beta here for an open source vector graphics editor (Illustrator type stuff rather than Photoshop)

Might be useful for those who need to that sort of thing.

General / CGI Lawmaster
25 February, 2008, 02:06:03 PM
Something I decided to knock up - still working on it

The eagle is half-done, and I want to push it a bit more towards the McMahon Lawmaster - so maybe ditch the storage box on the back, tweak the exhausts and make the wheel arches a bit curvier.

The McMahon LM doesn't seem to have rear lights that I can see, but I may leave some on.

Anyway, it's a start.

Any comments/suggestions welcome.

Cheers,

Steve

Anyone know anything about this?

They've got some film sets there (there was a photo of the Blockade Runner in the Evening Standard)

I went to the site, and it also mentions something about comic artists in residence, and 2000AD is mentioned.

Help! / Lawmaster blueprints
21 February, 2008, 06:34:25 PM
Hi,

I seem to recall that there was a proper line drawing of the Lawmaster published (possibly in a yearbook or annual) (I'm pretty sure it had a front and side elevation at least)

I've had a look on the Tek Division area, but they're not the one I was looking for.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

Thanks,

Steve

Off Topic / Fundamentalists say the funniest things

I would like to think they're all piss-takes, but...

"The other day while installing some new fiber optics cables for a satellite array I overheard some coworkers talking about quarks. Quarks are supposedly tiny particles that nobody can see and nobody has any use for. So why do we know about them? What good does it possibly do us to know what a quark is? Just another example of useless science, and wasted money on the so called research needed for this great discovery.

I seriously have to wornder about people who spend their free time thinking about things like quarks or quasars. There are more important things to do.

As far as I am concerned if an answer to a question isn't in the bible, then the you have no business asking the question. A few years ago when my wife suddenly had to get an emergency c-section I was scared. But I didnt turn to any book about quarks. Luckily I had my palm pilot with me, which just happened to have the entire King James bible on it! I read a few passages that gave me the strength to pray for her and the baby to get through this ordeal. I sure didn't need any useless trivia books about quarks to find comfort in.

I have very little use for science. In fact it is in impediment to getting close to God.

[Someone points out the obvious fact that c-sections and computers are a benefit of science.]

You are confusing TECHNOLOGY with SCIENCE.

Technology and science are often lumped together, but are totally separate and unrelated things.

Technology makes peoples lives easier. Technology is the product of inventive geniuses who were inspired by God. Inventions and innovations improve life.

Science causes confustion and makes things complicated. Everytime there is a new discovery the old discoveries and old wisdom are discarded! And theories get more and more complex. Science makes people confused and complicates things. Who is the author of confusion? Satan of course. The bible it the opposite of science. Biblical wisdom NEVER CHANGES, and anyone can get it. Scientific wisdom is always changing and contradicting itself, and really nobody gets it.

Please don't insult our intelligence by lumping science and technology together. They are as different at night and day."

Help! / External drive problem
15 December, 2007, 04:52:25 PM
Hi,

not sure if anyone can help, but I had an external Maxtor drive which died, and I decided to recycle the enclosure and put a new 500Gig drive in it.

Unfortunately it looks like the enclosure locks it to the original size, and only sees 128Gig.

So... I bought another enclosure, but it still only lets me format to 128Gig.

Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the curse of Maxtor and let me use the whole 500Gig?

Cheers,

Steve

The balloon headed robot is ace.

And the Christmas robot reminds me of Bender's wrestling alter ego.

Off Topic / New wacom screen/tablet
23 October, 2007, 07:52:25 AM
Have any of the artists used one of these?

Wacom did have some very expensive tablet/screen combos - I seem to remember Frazer having one, and trying to flog it to me :) - the thing that put me off them before, is they seemed to lag a bit compared to the regular Wacoms, but I don't know if this has improved much.

I wondered if they've improved much - this looks a bit more manageable (about 12"), but it's still quite pricey at £800.

Still would be nice to be able to lounge about and draw in Photoshop or Painter.

Cheers,

Steve

I like the Abelard Snazz solution of training bigger monkeys to scare them off.

Maybe they should just give them horses and guns while they're at it.

Film & TV / Jericho and the Unit
30 September, 2007, 08:31:25 PM
I noticed that Jericho is appearing on ITV4 starting on the 3rd October, and the Unit on the new Virgin 1 channel.

Either of these worth watching?

The Unit is a co-creation of David Mamet and the Shield's Shawn Ryan, so it has pretty good credentials, and I quite like the sound of Jericho's post-nuclear premise.

Cheers,

Steve

I think these have been around a while, but it's quite a cool effect.

It's a lens which makes the depth of field on wide shots very shallow, which makes real footage look like models.
