Well, the premiere was yesterday - sadly, no reports of Wagner headbutting Cronenburg...

The trailer doesnt give any indication of massive changes...

Film & TV / History of Violence the movie...
12 May, 2005, 03:30:02 PM
..as distinct from the graphic novel apparently..

Theres an interview in todays Times with Cronenburg, where he predictably distances his film from its source - ?the script was so far away from the novel, there was no point in even referring to it.?

It?s a bit of a downer, as I had high hopes for this one,and this interview is a bit of a dent in my confidence ? the standard ?well the source material is a rubbishy comic, so we ditched all that? approach to marketing your comic based movie.

Still, lets hope it makes John some cash, even if it does turn out to be another abomination.

Interestingly (from a spod point of view), the viewing figures continue to hold up, with 7.5 million overnight( and that figure potentially rising to above 8 mill once those who videoed the show are factored in)...

i think the idea of any crossover with Yankee comics is a terrible idea - the Batman crossovers are pretty ropey, but wasting valuable stront on X-Men?? No chance.  Theres not enough stront in the prog as it is, without watering it down with insipid marvel mutants.

Prog / Re: Prog 1436 - Night of the Livin...

Well, Slaine was the most interesting thing in the prog for me.  Sure, Slaine is nowhere near the quality you can find in the new collection, but it beats the current crop of lack lustre no thrills in a way that only a warped warrior can.

Just because Karyn acknowledges the Anderson thing, doesnt make it any less predictable.  Given Gordon is capable of stuff like "Meet the Flooks" and "Couch Potatoes", I'm surprised at how derivative this one is; we've seen this lkind of thing before and better in stuff like Cry of the Werewolf and Judge Death (and worse on the Karyn story, admittedly).  The colours are very nice, but the only other thing to recommend it is the "9/10ths of the law" cover line.

VCs is yawntastic as always, while Dante continues to recycle its own back story rather than push things forward.

American Gothic is Ok in a "Western meets Horror" formulaic kind of way.

Overall, a pretty blah prog for me - hoping that new thrills are just around the corner.

as someone wo didnt start reading til prog 195, I'd say the golden years start from 178 as well - theres two sgnifiacnt things around this time that spring to mind.  Firstly, the Tornado merge stories are put to bed, and the comic is allowed to get on with what it does best - the previous blossoming of a Golden age occurred with the Starlord merger, but was cut cruelly short by the tornado merger, which not only diluted the quality lineup available, but also freed up a rubbish bog paper printing press, denying the progs that lovely glossy look it briefly enjoyed in the early 100s.  Also, Alan Grant/Wagner writing partnership comes into play, as well as a truckful of Alan Moore one-offs.  Theres gret stuff between 127 and 177 (Robohunter, Stainless Steel Rat), but theres a lot of baggagew as well

The Golden period then runs on through most of progs until the late 500s, but the cracks begin to show a little once the bog paper goes.

Firstly Moore runs off, then the Grant Wagner writing partnership dissolves, then Crisis launches, stretching the available talent, and depriving the prog of Mills and Ezquerras full attention (and spelling doom for Alpha!) - The triple death!
