18 February, 2004, 09:43:08 AM

There are quite a few bad ones, let's face it:-

THE MAN WHO BROKE THE LAW - ghastly from start to finish, and followed directly by the brilliant THE PIT

BABES IN ARMS - art was ok...

THE JUDGE WHO LIVES DOWNSTAIRS - was not helped by garish Ewins artwork

BLIND MATE - simply shite

THE SUGAR BEAT - steenkeeng Steelgrove!

None by Wagner here...

When I pick up my copy of 2000AD or THE MEGAZINE from a newsagent, I never see anyone else making the same purchase - or even a similar one for that matter.

In fact I often get the impression it must only be me justifying the order my regular seller makes each week/month.

Distribution sales speak for themselves.

Comics are way out of vogue with the young market - it's only us crustys keeping the thing going.

Worse, in widescreen, you see more of it.

Hmm, a lot of dyslexic-jokes (like the dyslexic atheist who did not believe in Dog)....

Any among us, I wonder?

Okay, the antidote to that last one:-

A spolit kid is at the beach with his dad, he says: "Dad, Dad! Can I have an ice-cream?"

Dad says, "Look son, you've already had a nice day out... now you want an ice-cream? Well, okay but then we have to go."

The kid eats his ice-cream, and spots a donkey-ride stall. "Dad, Dad! Can I have a go on the donkeys?"

Dad says, "Look son, you've had a nice day out, you've had an ice-cream... and now you want a shot on the donkeys? Weeelll.. OK, but that's it mind!"

The kid enjoys himself so much on the donkeys he says, "Dad, dad! Will you BUY me a donkey??"

"Look son, you've had a nice day out, you've had an ice-cream, you've had a go on the donkeys... and now you WANT a donkey?? Well I don't... OH GO ON THEN!"

So father and son and donkey are plodding home, and the kid is chuffed to bits. He pipes up, "Dad, dad!"

"What NOW, son?"

"Can I call the donkey WANKER??"

"Look son, you've had a nice day, you've had an ice-cream, you've had a go on the donkeys, I've BOUGHT you a bloody donkey... and now you want to call it WANKER??? No, no... enough is enough son. I'm sorry."

The kid starts to cry.

Dad relents. "Okay, okay, okay - you can call the donkey WANKER. But that REALLY is IT for today son, okay??"

"Okay dad, you're the best dad in the world. Thanks!"

So the donkey is tied up in the front garden and the family go to sleep.

In the middle of the night, the kid wakes up to commotion outside. He runs to his window and sees the donkey has broken free, leapt the garden wall and is galloping away up the street.

The kid sprints through to his parents' room, turns on the light and yells, "DAD, DAD...! WANKER'S OFF!!!"

"Look son, you've had a nice day out, you've had an ice-cream......."

Hmmm.

There is a spot-on review of the film in www.robotfist.com, those who have not seen or heard of it - though it does contain spoilers.

There are several trailers for IRREVERSIBLE, and one is very subtly shocking - particularly after you have seen the film.

One of the most powerful and unconformist movies I have ever seen, and not just because it is told backwards.

I thought the race sequence was a knockout - fun, exciting, and very well crafted.

Annakin's unintentional space battle was rather contrived, I agree.

Experiencing the original trilogy as a kid, I paid no attention to actors or their performance in the films - the characters were purely Luke, Leia and Han as far as I was concerned. Similarly I tried to ignore Liam Neeson and Ewan MacGregor and succeeded to a degree, though it was impossible not to draw some comparisons with their performances in other movies.

If Lucas had casted largely unknowns again in his leads, a lot of pretence would have been lost to the film's benefit.

Jar-Jar? Meesa thinkin' he not so bad.

Well said Jen - I haven't seen REVOLUTIONS yet... and strangely have not desire to at the minute, even though I thought the first MATRIX was marvellous.

Pretentious, the critics said about RELOADED - I'm inclined to agree for once. If there had been no sequels, the ending of the first would have cemented it as one of a kind - the outcome of the  battle between human & machine would have been best left fought in our minds.

This seems a great opportunity to say I enjoyed THE PHANTOM MENACE. I enjoyed the story, the acting, and the special effects.

I would seem to be in the minority - I don't think I've spoken to a single other person who agrees, ever.

Did ANYONE like it, for what it was - a prequel to a classic sci-fi trilogy?

Would anything have made it a winner with today's audience...?

ALIEN has some brilliant trailers - just the eerie soundtrack over snippets of the action

CLIFFHANGER stood out with its dramatic music over some hair-raising mountain scenes

TRAINSPOTTING with Renton on the tracks

ANY UNRATED LUCIO FULCI TRAILER is usually packed with outragous gore... and spoilers!

Yes, NIGHTMARE AT 20,000 FEET - later remade in the TZ film with John Lithgow.

Also, during the making of the film, actor Vic Morrow was killed by a helecopter - shocking stuff, if you see the footage.

Yeah, that was Burgess Meredith wasn't it? He was in a few.

THIRD FROM THE SUN was another good Matheson one, and some of the hour-long ones were good; THE THIRTY FATHOM GRAVE & THE NEW EXHIBIT.

And Bradbury's I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC!

ANGEL, BUFFY, SMALLVILLE... ugh.

I've been reaquainted with THE TWILIGHT ZONE thanks to the double-bill on the Sci-Fi Channel every weekday - brilliant!

The Richard Matheson episodes are the best (that one where the woman is terrorised by mini-"aliens" is great fun), and even some of the Rod Serling ones are highly watchable.

The guy terrorised by the fruit machine! `Fraaaaankliiin...!`

They did a new series or two a few years ago and they were not a patch on the 60's ones, though I remember one or two surprisingly weren't bad.

Though I prefered THE OUTER LIMITS (also re-vamped a few years ago, but little to appeal there) as a kid, and look forward to their run on Sci-Fi hopefully next.

Cronenberg is a great body-horror auteur and I look forward to this!

CRASH was overrated and a victim of its own hype... a prime example of the press encouraging potential viewers by demonising its content - well done The Daily Mail!
