Off Topic / Re: Postal strike
10 October, 2007, 02:55:34 PM
Our local post is appalling, with my brother having a lot of problems with cds, dvds, games and books ordered online going missing in transit - at one point, a PS2 game went missing, as did it's replacement copy, and the second replacement copy, at which point the company refunded his money and declared our area 'unsafe' for delivery.  All this happened AFTER one postie was arrested for dumping post in a ditch so he could sift through it later for money or anything he could sell to support his heroin habit, so there ain't much love 'round these parts.

Having said that, I always liked the idea of industrial action returning some measure of power to workers on the lowest tier of any industry, but until the prevalent view is to track down bosses and smash their cars up or something equally mental, I can't see them being intimidated by work stoppages.
I'm not condoning that kind of action, I'm just saying that pretty much anything short of it is unlikely to move someone to action when they can get away with losing millions of pounds through negligence and not get fired - just moved to a different post.

You're living like Fred Flintstone, Davis!

You can get a tablet for about 20-30 quid from just about anywhere these days.  If there's an Argos near you, they run a 14-day returns policy, so you can try one of their cheapo models out for about a week and see if it's for you - if not, just leave it back saying the software is incompatible with your pc.  If it is for you, leave it back anyway and buy a half-decent one.

Yeah, it's easy to forget how rubbish Enterprise could truly be - but it helps to remind ourselves by showing how it could rob such a genius idea of anything resembling fun, despite some good ideas (redone opening sequence, fistfight with a Gorn) being knackered by lackluster implementation (new theme was rubbish, Gorn was shitty CGI).  It's not saying much, but that was probably one of the standout (2) episodes, and represented a curious slowing of the downward spiral the show was taking to that point - it wasn't what I'd call good, but certainly nowhere near as bad as it was when it was dubbed "The Trek show ever Trek fans won't watch."

I'm intrigued by Of Gods And Men, mind.  It's a Trek fan-made movie set across the regular and Mirror Universes, shot for peanuts by fans of the show from various walks of life (including CGI artists, sound production and acting) who've given of their own time to see it completed.  There's the odd familiar face among the cast as a consequence, and it's directed by Tuvok off Voyager (not his real name).

Film & TV / Re: Jericho and the Unit

Jericho's hard to dislike.  It might not float your boat, but it won't divide opinion like something like Babylon 5 - it's just a smalltown tv drama with some post-apocalyptic trimmings.  It probably didn't go down too well because it answered questions in a timely fashion, rather than keep you guessing and drag the arse out of things like Lost does, but it's occasionally strong on character - the bit in the final episode where the town expects Jake to give them a morale-boosting speech and he just says "We'll get through" is a lovely bit of non-speechifying that's quite welcome.
Not spectacular, but not terrible, either.

Homoerotic slash homophobic subtext - and not in an ironic way!

The disabled get the boot, too, if you fancy looking into it in any depth and ascribing meaning to any of it - but considering it's from Frank 'Goddamn Batman' Miller, you're only fooling yourself.  It's a glorious big pile of noisy shite and you'll either like it or you won't on those terms.
CGI backgrounds, though - yech.

He hand-picked his opponents for the boxing match, and turned down one amateur-level kickboxer who called him out personally - not exactly leaving it to chance, was he?  He also claimed he'd arrange fight training for the matches before any of the critics got near the ring.  Didn't happen.

Having said all that, I do like the idea of internet people being called out if they write a bad review.  It somehow makes the world seem like a better place if there's a chance Wil Ferrel might get his face punched off the next time he makes an alleged comedy.

He uses a German tax shelter that underwrites the cost of the movie if they use a German crew, facilities, etcetera.  He's apparantly the only one to use this tax incentive the way the German government intended it to be used - in order to make using local movie facilities and labour more desirable to domestic and foreign producers.  For the most part, it was used by local companies to funnel money into American film productions.
Although his movies have mostly - and rightly - bombed, Bloodrayne, House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark have made enough to warrant sequels, and making money is the endgame for a movie, when all's said and done.

His Far Cry treatment sounds mad.  I thought the game was good, but I had it on Xbox and the seven-minute loading time put me off repeat playing.

*both formerly known and its jla classified sequal I can't believe its not are both avaliable as trades*

D'oh!

Still think the Hitman reprints are unlikely, though.  Pity.
Those trades would make a nice read for fans of 52, if only to see them as a great swansong for the Ralph/Sue Dibny duo of more fun comics times.  Guy Gardner as something other than an unfunny joke was a revelation, too.

The current head honcho at DC, Dan DiDio, has nixed all forms of humour at the expense of DC characters in the comics, claiming it undermines them in terms of drama, which is why there hasn't been a trade of the Giffen/DeMatteis Formerly Known As The Justice League (despite high sales of the comics), and most likely why there won't be any trades of hitman in the near future, either.
Of course, this doesn't account for why the JLA/Hitman book went ahead.  Maybe it was commissioned and paid for before DiDio took over and they have to publish it - a bit like a Bizarro-Blood Of Satanus, where a publisher is forced to print something good even though they don't want to.

"For the life of me, I can't figure out whether or not the sarcasm in your second post also applies to your first."

If it entertains you, does it matter?
But so you know - no.

Hiro's journey - "hero's journey" - I just got that!
That's dead clever.  Whatever they're paying these writers, it's not enough.
