Read Ringworld on Boxing Day. Starts out great but sort of fizzles out at the end. I know there's at least one follow-up, but do we ever find out who or what built the Ringworld?

Loved Ringworld when I was  all of 12, but it's not Orbitsville or Rendezvous with Rama, is it Cosh?

Skip straight to the 4th book Ringworld's Children -- more plot than the preceding books combined in half the page count of any of the individual volumes.

Do not even contemplate Ringworld Throne Cosh. The unintentional pun of the title says everything you need to  know about this book

All we have to do is travel down to his place and break in. He tweeted a picture from his snowy window of a rainbow the other day, does anyone recognise the other houses?

No, but Stevie's pretty damn sure that he'd recognise that rainbow if he ever clapped eyes on it again.

Bollocks, what are we going to do now!

Do what my old man used to do. Say, "They're coming" until about April, then quietly drop the subject.

Oh I dunno, every time people think that of Pat you find out it is based on some carefully researched factoid.

Yep, you'll find that the originator of this was Charles Pelledrino http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_R._Pellegrino.

He didn't go the next step & suggest that whole styracosaurs could suspended in amber, but 2000ad was readily available in New Zealand newsagents when Charles was an undergraduate.

He also invented the concept of relativistic weaponry, which he & George Zebrowski use to wonderful effect in The Killing Star.

His debut novel Flying to Valhalla features the Valkyrie space drive system that he developed with James Powell & particle physicist Hiroshi Takahashi but, to tell the truth, is a bit of the mess that first novels can be.

His ST:NG novel Dyson Sphere (also with Zebrowski) features some gobsmacking high concept sequences but feels rather constrained. It may be a case that writing in franchise prevented the authors form really letting loose, but lack of charisma on the part of the Next Gen's cast certainly doesn't help things.

Meanwhile back in the prog... Stevie liked the subtlety of the Terror Tale & thought the choice of Yeowell to be well suited. Anyone else read from this that
London itself is alive & is indeed the monster?
Stevie used to be one someone's ignore list, but not any more. They obviously feel strongly enough about my posts to even do that anymore. Bah.

Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (cos you need to read something scary at Xmas)

Stevie's only recently read this myself -- it's a goodie.

Stevie's picks from the Meg this year:

Insurrection -- arguably the finest new Dreddworld strip since Devlin Waugh.

The creator interviews -- invariably the first thing I read each Meg.

Tank Girl -- yes, I said Tank Girl. Alan's magpie eye for pop culture is as astute as ever & Rufus' page compositions are second to none.

Magic Bullets -- exactly what I had hoped Grant Morrison would have brought to Dredd. Except he didn't get the character but thank heavens Al does. A triumphant joy.

Darren Dead -- To tell the truth his first appearance left me cold for some reason. It felt too self-consciously liked an origins story for my liking & I wasn't too bothered about seeing this character again. However Rob's really hit his stride in the interim & this I most definitely like. With the tone of an apple cheeked Victorian street urchin, "More please!"

News / Re: December Previews, for "February" shipping
24 December, 2009, 01:03:18 AM
Snap! Most surprised that it shipped to Auxtralia on time as our pre-crimbo diamond delivery is invariable delayed until the following week.

Also arriving today were my Anderson Psi-files & the latest Charley's War -- three guesses how Stevie will be spending tomorrow arvo?

Remember kids -- a cybernetically-augmented deinonychus isn't just for Christmas.

Just started Seize the day on my daily commute. Man, can this Saul Bellow write. He oughta be awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature or something.

Oddly enough, a small part of Stevie is anticipating down on his luck protagonist Tommy Wilhelm discovering that he's in actual fact an android.

I just ate some Skittles, just in case anyone wants to know!

Brilliant! Reckon that you could post how many you ate by the time Stevie gets back from a poo?

Stevie's gonna hold off making his decision until he's seen 'em all.
