>It's difficult for me to explain exactly what I mean. It's said about pornography that you can't define it but you know it when you see it, and for me art - in this case comic art - is like that.

perhaps true comic art can be separated from skilled illustration by the response it invokes in the trouser department, blackblood?

>Offhand, there are only a few artists who've worked for 2000AD over the years who I think of as anything more than superb illustrators - Mike McMahon, for example.

yep, mike mcmahon & definitely brendan mccarthy too.

turning the question upside down then veering off at a slight tangent, does anyone else feel that alex ross is an extremely gifted portrait artist (very much the normal rockwell of comics) but not quite as successful as a comics storyteller.

his covers & his work for those annual treasury sized dc books written by paul dini (single page illustrations & double page splashes with dini text printed prose style on the page) are superlative, but to me his sequential work (or what i've seen of it) lacks a certain spark; the individual panels are beautifully rendered but there's no actual flow between them.

with the profound influence that he has exerted upon brett ewin's work post 1990.

>I still don't understand why it is respectable to watch soap operas instead of talking to your neighbours and why to read or watch something escapist is so bizarrely wrong.

c.s. lewis (author of 'out of a silent planet' the narnia chronicles, amongst others) once remarked that those who are against escapism are jailers.

walking back thriugh the rain with a falfel from my local lebanese restaurant named hello dolly (i kid you not) i got to thinking that our would be alien conqueror needs some sort of mechanism to make his potential subjects malleable to taking him in. however, for the sake of the story, this means can't be effective on both the man & the woman. it came to me in a flash:--

pheromones.

anteantepenultimate panel:
(man & woman looking down at alien conqueror who, as seen from behind, is letting one rip. man has a look of disgust on his face, women is giddily beaming like it's smelling of roses & hugh grant has just put his hand on her knee.
man: "p-hew! does it stink!"
woman: "is mr man saying naughty things about our little darlings? don't worry, we'll scrub you up just a treat!"

think that i prefer the alternative ending, jimbob.

antipenultimate panel:
woman (smiling as she holds our alien conqueror up before her face, noses almost touching): "oh, isn't he just darling? can we keep him?"

penutimate panel:
man & woman climbing into car as seen from behind. the alien conqueror cradled  by the woman like an infant, gazing across her shoulder at the reader with triumphant glee.
woman:"you're coming home with us now, baby, where we'll be a happy little family the three of us together & what fun we'll have, sweetums. we'll buy you the beautiful new collar first thing tomorrow & go for walkies in the park..."
man;"sure--"

ultimate panel:
car starting off down the road seen from rear
man (from inside car):"right after we've had him done at the vet."

or words to that effect.

>Such a shame that proposed TV series with Edward Fox and Rodney Bewes never came to fruition.

that was the one which brendan mccarthy did some pre-production design for in the early 1980s, wasn't it?

whilst we're on the subject, anyone know what ever became of reverso's z-men project for vertigo?

i hope that you don't mind me asking but your recent postings regarding your upcoming work on tor cyan & lenny zero reminded me that tharg's nerve centre once made mention of you painting the next devlin waugh epic. is this still happening?

hasn't anyone ever told you that making fun of people's religious persuasion is impolite, judge dudus?

speaking of belief systems, we all know that finnigan rapunzel sinister is an profoundly superstious man, so i was wondering whether any of you other posters have any major superstitions which rule your everyday lives. mine is not stepping on the blank spaces when using a zebra crossing, because when i do yet another person takes astology seriously.
