Never really got with Rankin's stuff despite the fact that he's a sound bloke (I once scrounged a cig off him)... but story with Elvis and time-travelling sprout is got to be worth a go.

Yeah, Wake why can't you change the whole way the internet works and allow us to post direct from our PCs? It's not much to ask...

The wood-pulp guy's pitch had a great start... "You've heard of cyber-punk and steam-punk, well know there's wood-punk!" Which got a big laugh. I think with only half a story he would stolen it... pity it was just background and characters.

I knew it could not have been you Trout, unless you've been lying about what you look like...

Lol... Buffy the Sniffer Dog. Well at least you heard 'something' of what he was saying....

Oh and in the approximate words of some advice on pitching at comic conventions I read on an Amercian site: Don't pitch at your target editor as they are trying to get a drink at the bar... Don't follow then into the toilet and slide your manuscript under the cubicle door and... and does this really need to be said? because if so it kinda puts me off American conventions... try to keep body odour to a minimum...

Oh and a point I forgot. If you've got a broad accent that may be a little hard to understand for none natives don't rattle your pitch off at a hundred miles a hour so it's completely incomprehensible. If you are nervous you will speak quicker so think 'slow down'.

More than one? I doubt it... there were a fair number wanting to do it when I was there. Pick your best shot and make it perfect.

Judges: Probably whatever Script Droids they can drag out of the bar. And a token representative Art Droid. I don't thing Tharg was there last time but he did have a representative. They gave crits after each pitch ("I guessed the ending after the first line" was my fave) There was also audience show of hands for who they thought was the best and they won a prize (I think?). And the judges selected there own winner? (Memory vary hazy here)

Oh if there is a mini-pitch fest as well, don't make my mistake and try and write an epic on the post-it note provided... they only want a crap pun on a strip name.

I do hope it goes ahead. I imagine it's torture for the pitchers... but it is such fun to watch.

Pitchfest

Well I've only been to one and the format might change...

3-5mins (I think) to pitch a story - and that's pitch ie sell, not mumble something, head down, into a piece of paper. You could also try and present a new character (don't bother). And you can have props and character sketches etc to help you if you want.

See enthusiastically tell you story like you tell a mate in a pub the story of a film you have just seen. Don't do a clich? that everyone will have heard before (hunters after terrible creature that terns out to be a man). Don't forget to tell a story even if your setting is great (wood pulp). Don't be too complicated (space bamboo). Humour works well (the winner).
