I had similar experiences to the above when I was a student. I'd be facing the wall to my left but would be seeing the view of the room to the right which would freak me out. Another time I was seeing a face leaning over staring at me. I figured out in the morning it was the silhouette of my angle poise lamp with a jumper I left on top of it. I put all these down to being semi-awake and yet in a dreamlike state. Dreams can be freaky at the best of times.

Me: "Two cappuccinos and two croissants please. To have in (or however I phrased it)."
Confused look.
Me: "To have here".
"What's he sayin'?"
Me: "To have in here, pointing to table and stools" while desperately trying to think of the opposite of 'to go'.

"For here."

Wow. I should've told them to "connect the dots!" ("dot to dot" wouldn't make sense of course).

Fer cryin' out loud. How can someone not understand "to have here" when they are used to hearing "for here."

I find it amazing how in some countries you have to pronounce words perfectly to be understood. Try ordering Coca Cola in some parts of Spain in a non-Spanish accent and see the blank looks you. I guess in the UK many people are used to hearing English in all sorts of different accents.

I know some people who asked where a "water park" is in the US and they weren't understood. "Oh, the wa'er park!" (however that would be spelt).

Two nations divided by a common language, as they say.

Yes, apparently some 'Americanisms' are from old English? Don't ask me for examples though.

I was about to mention the "can I get..." comment but was beaten to it.

Another is the now common response to "How are you?": "I'm good!!" (with annoyingly raised tone). Americanism?

Surprised how in the US at times we struggled to make ourselves understood to cafe/diner staff. Eg buying a cappuccino and croissant in the morning (just pointing out how European and sophisticated we are there).

These guys were Hispanic and their English wasn't that great anyway. I wondered if the only version of English they're exposed to is colloquial American-English spoken by New Yorkers and so couldn't work out what we were trying to say.

Locustsoflove, fellow boarder. Please excuse any of my rudeness above and inform me: what is the opposite of 'to go' when ordering grub or drinks in the US? It's been niggling me for a couple of years now.

Spooky, as I just got the chills reading these stories so late at night. And then the name of a particular road appeared in this thread which raised an eyebrow.

Anyway, years ago I was renting a bedsit. One morning I noticed that a cup of coffee that I hadn't drunk was almost empty. No spillages at all but a t-shirt I left lying around had a large coffee stain on it in a tie-dye effect as if the t-shirt had been scrunched up and dunked in the coffee and wrung.

Bizarre. I could think of a few explanations: 1. Something supernatural. I don't believe in that (though I reserve the right to be spooked by it). 2. Someone came into the room. Not possible as my keys were on the inside of the door and all windows were secure. 3. I sleepwalked and played night time coffee tie dyeing. I find that so eerie. Would I need to switch on the light to have done that I wonder? Or 4, I sleepwalked and let someone in to do that. Now in about 15 years since that happened I only just thought of option 4 which spooks me more than me just doing it in my sleep. 'Let the right one in'.

I held back from posting this in case people thought I am nuts but have been prompted to mention it due to MT's suspected sleep walking incident.

Howdy, fine Lady Festina.

Er, seems that we've gone a bit chintzy here. Oh well, guess it must be back in fashion.

Forever grateful for the awe inspiring artwork over the decades. Your work is amongst the best that ever graced the pages of 2000AD. Your Rogue Trooper art was just stunning and it looks just as fresh today as it did when I was a kid. I then fondly remember your first episode of Dredd and discussing with friends your imposing version of Dredd towering over the cits of MC1. You then went on to spoil us with so many classics.

All the best and enjoy your retirement.

Have to say I am surprised at just how good the black and white stage of the Rico/Dredd cover is. Just outstanding.

One of these once stepped out in front of me whilst I was hurriedly crossing a plaza... and asked "Do you believe in God?", to which I replied "Which one?" and carried on walking. The confused look on his face was priceless.
I used the reverse argument on a Jehovah's witness when he once asked me: "which God do you believe in?" I replied: "Why, how many do you think there are?" That shut him up.

He was once giving out leaflets in the bus which I think is really out of order. Others politely accepted though their reactions showed they weren't interested. He tried to give a leaflet to me but I told him he shouldn't bother as his leaflet will just go in the bin so he backed off. He seems to remember me now and hasn't approached me again.

Not quite a 'Life Spugs' entry, but I went back to being a commuter last week. Man, the rush hour crowds on the tube! Something else. The idea of being stuck in one of those crowded trains in a tunnel fills me with dread.

On Thursday I bought a coffee from Pret (I know it's a chain but they make great coffee) and I was given a fiver extra in change and I gave it back. That evening I fancied a Costa coffee (repeat: I know it's a chain but they make great coffee) and found that I had ran out of money so I had to pay £2 by card. Bah. Good deeds are a waste of time. Or perhaps they should be reserved for those who deserve them rather than companies that sell (very tasty) over salted fattening foods masquerading as healthy meals.
