Film & TV / Re: Rogue Trooper News…!
29 January, 2024, 04:04:59 PM
It doesn't say Friday, it just says 19. Maybe that's a reference to the Friday stories, but that doesn't mean it's going to resemble them in any way beyond that detail.

The image in the article looks closer to Rogue than Friday. Maybe wait for the trailer before worrying?

Prog / Re: Prog 2366 - End of the Road
29 January, 2024, 01:52:12 PM
I liked Counterfeit Girl. I don't enjoy the Devil's Railroad, although I don't hate it as much as some people. I liked the original Bad Company but not the new ones. I loved The Dead.

On balance, I think the prog is better off with Peter Milligan contributing to it, because for everything I don't like, he does something else I enjoy. In an anthology I don't expect to like everything.

In Flashback, Armitage is in his 20s in or around the year 2080, which in 2146 would make him in his 80s or possibly 90s.

Quotethe U.S Dredd was, I thought, pretty decent.
I agree. IDW Dredd is very hit and miss, but this episode is good. And the writer (Mark Russell) has evidently done his research, as this version of Dredd is consistent with Tharg's -- I'd forgotten that Beeny used to have a pet lizard in America II !

No thanks, I'd rather not see any more of Dan Dare in the prog thanks!

Other Reviews / Which thrills have you skipped?
19 January, 2024, 10:52:59 PM

Quote from: Magnetica on 18 January, 2024, 10:31:49 PMI'll never skip anything in the Prog but I just read them as fast as possible and move on.

I saw this comment on another thread, and it made me think about how dedicated to the prog you have to be to read an episode of an ongoing story when you already know you won't like it, and -- if you're that kind of fan -- how bad a story has to be for you to decide that you're actually going to stop reading it.

For me, I hardly ever skip a story, and I'll usually force myself to read something I'm not interested in, but I did stop reading Space Girls.*

Which story made you think "nah, I'm done"?

* Sorry David -- if it helps, I really liked The Savage Amusement.

Great write-up! It does sound like a fun book, I'll look at it later. But first, my new copy of Nightshift arrived today, so I'll check that out first!

I'm a big fan of Keith Martin / Carl Sargent, and he wrote at least one of my favourite FF books. I think this is his first? His work in combination with Martin McKenna's is a treat, I'll have to dig this book out again.

Looking forward to your next write-up!

News / Re: Sad News about John M Burns
17 January, 2024, 12:22:25 AM
I've just re-read Angel Zero for the first time, because John Burns did the art, and found it to be much, much better than I had remembered. I think it suffered at the time from being mostly published in four-page instalments, which made it difficult to get into each week, and hard to keep track of the story; but in one sitting it's gold.

I hope it makes it into the Ultimate Collection.

General / Re: Best 2000 AD strips of 2023 (non-Dredd)

QuoteRegened is missing the punk gene. It's like "2000 AD Sanitized for Clean Middle-Aged Moms 'n' Pops Who Like Clean Surfaces and Clean Minds and Well-Behaved Honorable Surfers". Scrappy Doo in comic form, basically.
This sums up my view of Regened completely.

(To be fair, there are still some Regened stories I have liked. But overall, it rarely feels like 2000AD.)
