Help! / Caballistics
« on: 09 November, 2006, 12:25:59 PM »
My brain isn't working today. How many members of the Caballistics team are there? Is it six or seven? I keep thinking I'm forgetting someone.

Help! / Girls of Dredd
« on: 17 October, 2006, 03:18:08 PM »
I fancy having a bash at a 'Girls of Dredd'-type ensemble picture, similar to the one I did of the Dante girls for the last art competition, but I can't actually think of enough, unlike Dante's world, which offered rather too many.

I've still yet to read a great deal of classic Dredd, and I'm only up to book 3 of the Case Files. Help me out, people - I'm sure the Dreddverse isn't as starved of appealing female characters as it seems.

Obvious ones are -

Cass Anderson
Hershey
DeMarco...

...and that's about all my dull-witted memory has come up with so far, unless people want to see McGruder and Maria pouting in the altogether*. Names and pics much appreciated. Minor characters are okay too.

*I have no intention of drawing this.

Off Topic / Which Dante girls would you rather see scantily-clad?
« on: 23 August, 2006, 04:04:32 PM »
A bizarre and baffling Dante question whose relevance will become clear in time. Just bear with me for now.

Of the following three characters, which two would you ideally rather see in a state of undress...?

Eloise De Jannissare?

Julianna Makarov?

Akira Sagawa?

Film & TV / DOCTOR WHO - DOOMSDAY
« on: 08 July, 2006, 05:17:14 PM »
Tonight at seven, peeps... I can't bloody wait...
It may be written by RTD, it may turn out to be a load of old donkey cack, but whatever else it's still CYBERMEN AND DALEKS!!!!!!!

(And apoligies to ARRISARRIS for blagging the thread, I know he seems to like getting these first. No hard feelings) :)

BBC1, Friday night, 12.45pm - That Amicus classic, The House that Dripped Blood, starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Jon Pertwee. If you don't love this there's something wrong with you.

Prog / Prog 1492: Ghoul Britannia!
« on: 12 June, 2006, 06:17:29 PM »
Gadzooks! That's possibly the best cover I have ever seen! Boo Cook has quite simply become untouchable lately. I want this framed and on my wall.

I'm in the mood for a quick review today, so -

Dredd: Does the buisness.

Kipling; Good to have it back (but thank god it's only around for short, punchy runs). Boo Cook's art is... well, I won't gush again, but it's gorgeous. Not sure about that yellow border, though. Looks like we might be getting a bit more much-needed backstory.

V.C.s: By now you must know if you love or hate this - though it does look a little flat and lifeless after the beauty and insanity of Kipling.

Red Seas: A Ray Harryhausen wet dream. Lovely.

London Falling: Much improves on last week. This is exactly the sort of thing I would write - the ancient urban legends and demons of London killing many people. Lovely, and the art's much better too.

Overall massively improved on the previous couple of weeks, although my copy seems to have been pulled through a particularly spiky hedge, and some of the printing is TERRIBLE - Red Seas and London Falling particularly are smudged, blurry and just bleurgh. Anyone else's like this?

Website and Forum / Why are new people put off by the board?
« on: 11 June, 2006, 04:59:19 PM »
Thought I'd start a new thread on this rather than clutter up Amstor's review thread - but that perfectly highlights what puts new people off coming here - one guy innocently starts a review thread about new books and a bunch of idiots (more Art than Logan, to be fair) jump down his throat moaning and bitching; which then leads into a convoluted, in-depth discussion/argument.

Add this to what happened with Carlsborg and Spurrier on the prog thread, and if I had just joined the board, I'd probably leave it again. It might just be the most un-welcoming place in the world (although I hasten to add, it's great once you've settled in).

And I also maintain the board itself needs an upgrade. The 2kreview board looks brill and is nice and easy to navigate, this by contrast looks old and convoluted - I've heard time and again from people that the mere look of the board put them off, or that they couldn't work out how to use it. Adding icons or working out the bold/italic tabs is hardly easy compared to other boards, is it?

I'm also taking the liberty of quoting Logan's sensible points from the other thread:

My only gripe about multiple threads discussing the same topic is that it makes it harder for new people to get the hang of the place. In Bristol I spoke to many people coming to the 2000 AD table and if I could get it in the conversation I?d mention the message board. Many weren?t interested at all but the few who had paid it a visit but didn?t take part gave various reasons for it including:
Cliques and already established hierarchy that made it fell unwelcoming to any one new.
Topics being in multiple places, so hard to follow and going wildly off topic very quickly.
Personal attacks on people.
Not being that interesting.
Are you joking I?m not that sad.
And a whole host of others that boiled down to read the comic, not interested in anything else or who else reads it.

Sorry dude, but... y'know. :) Exactly how many icons of yours are currently in the thread list?!?!

Off Topic / Which Long Walk would you take?
« on: 26 May, 2006, 11:39:14 PM »
You're a judge, about to take the Long Walk - where do you choose to take it? The Cursed Earth, or the Undercity?**

Personally, I'd plump for the Undercity. It's been more neglected story-wise, and I always side with the underdog. Plus I hate hot weather - the sun in the cursed earth would kill me. Give me pasty troggies and ghouls, werewolves and killer rats in stinking sewers any day over all the cowboy malarkey of the CE. Much cooler.

**Seeing as the Long Walk is now apparently no longer mandatory, you could, if you really wanted, choose a desk job instead. If you did, this would really say a lot about what kind of person you are...

(Posted 'cos I'm bored, and The Paul O' Grady Show is angering up my blood - I need a distraction).

General / Where for art thou Gronk...?

Anyone know what happened to the Gronk of Stronty dog fame? Did he die somehow, or just stop adventuring with Wulf and Johnny?

Books & Comics / Future Rebellion series...?
« on: 21 April, 2006, 07:04:23 PM »
Does anyone have any idea (Amstor and John O, I'm looking mainly at you) how many of the series that the DC line started off are going to get continuations? I'm talking about series like Strontium Dog, ABC warriors, Slaine, etc, that seem to have been suddenly sidelined. Any ideas/rumours?

Books & Comics / Top Ten Spin-offs
« on: 21 February, 2006, 08:54:39 PM »
Just finished reading Alan Moore's Top Ten, and I have to say it was pretty bloody good, definately worthy of all the praise it's been given. Anyway, what I wanted to know from you knowledgable people is whether either of the two short spin-offs, Smax and The 49ers, were worth getting? With the Smax one particularly it felt like the stories of the characters in question were deliberately only half-told in Top Ten, and it'd be nice to complete the story. So, opinions?

Prog / Prog 1472 - Queen country
« on: 23 January, 2006, 07:44:19 PM »
Really? No-one done this yet? Cool.

Dredd: Ah, Wagner, you are still the master. Just as we think an end approaches, you pull the rug out from under our feet. This is great and creepy, and miles ahead of that terrible Mandroid one in the Meg. Dredd always works best when he's in the meg itself.

Cabs And I can't say enough good things about this. So I won't try, except to say - heh, great joke at the start, and - ah, I think things are starting to come together at last.

Slaine Ace, and improves on the previous bits. I know the dialogue's a bit po-faced, but you guys do realise that's deliberate, right?

Ten Seconders Brilliant. I had doubts, but this segment is just brilliant. And the art (already great) suddenly improves tenfold halfway through for no apparent reason! Bonus!

Stront Well, like I said, Wagner is the master. Hope we see No Bones return.

Anyone got pics or scans of the landraider from the cursed earth saga? Can't find any and don't have the actual tale. Cheers!
