[Tour of Duty]

It already feels like I'm backing the losing horse, but it's Tour of Duty for me.

Savage is now due out mid-May - currently we're on Red Seas volume 3.

I wasn't going to enter this time, but you lot have just made it look like so much damn fun I didn't want to be left out!

Felt compelled to knock this up yesterday on learning of Paul Ritter's untimely demise:

I... find the intro with music much too loud (so have to turn the volume down), the spoken intro just right and then the actual content itself too quiet (though is audible when I turn up the volume)

As Steev says, I find Origins a bit 'flat' after the excellent prologue, and Booth's drawn so broadly he's impossible to take seriously as a real threat. So, although not without faults of its own, I'm voting Necropolis.

Yassa. The Dead Man. Morlocks. Ridgway. The reveal.

Sinfield. Francisco. Maybe. Inga. Beeny. Pink Eyes. Rico. Mutants. Ezquerra. Macneil. Higgins. Tour of Duty has so much more to offer.

The existence of slim volumes gives me hope that the final two books of Kingdom might still make it into the 2nd extension.

I still think they could have excluded Beautiful Freak from the Red Seas books, allowing them to fit it (just) into three volumes.

So much 'America's not an epic' talk. It's not the longest story, no, but even beyond its two direct sequels it introduced Total War, a thorn in the Judge's side for decades to come; it gave us the Terror/Total War cycle, and the six months(!) of aftermath stories that followed in its wake. It gave us maybe Dredd's single most important supporting character and led, in part, to Day of Chaos. That's one hell of a legacy for a 'not epic' story.

Judge Child is a fun picaresque romp about a bald mutant boy, a family of hillbillies and some goofy space shenanigans. Don't get me wrong, I love the Judge Child, but it doesn't have anything like the weight or legacy of America.

Mean was cured and retired by Wagner in 50 Year Man (prog 1536); then killed*, but redeemed, by Carroll in Rising Angel, Megazine 358.

*But given an 'Or is he...?' coda.
