Suggestions / Re: A novel idea (ho ho)
01 June, 2005, 07:27:13 PM
I just reread Look to Windward over the weekend, and was thinking about dirigible behemothaurs for a comic.

But what I really want to know is: Inversions - what's it all about? I read it three times, and then gave it to my (non-SF-reading) partner to read to see if he could understand it, but we drew a blank.

I'm at work this morning, supervising exams, and for the rest of the weekend I'll be marking essays, trying to finish the book I'm editing, and watching Dr Who.

That's something I've been thinking about - is 2000AD really something for kids to read these days? We had some friends to stay over Easter including their 9 yr old son, and I gave him a few progs to look at, but he wasn't keen, saying he thought they were 'a bit grown up' for him. And I can see his point (esp Sin/Dex, for example), but if a preteen boy isn't the target audience, who is? 2000AD is certainly still sold in the kids' section of newsagents, but is it reaching the new audience who are going to grow up with it? Or is it just aimed at nostalgic oldies?

Books & Comics / Space Kingsley...

... and the Secret Squadron.

Has anyone else ever read this? My dad had a Space Kinglsey annual from the 50s which I read in my teens, in which 'Space' and his heroic multicultural squadron roamed the galaxy evil (as far as I can recall), but I've never seen a mention of it since, and no sign of a ref on the web.

Does anyone know more?

Didn't he used to busk in Oxford long ago? With a violin and echo box?

I came to like it a lot. Unlike many stories it started slowly, but added layers of complexity as it went on (contrast TSDM, for instance, which had used up all its ideas by ep 2), and by the end offered much more than it seemed to be at the beginning. I agree that the sports angle wasn't really exploited, but then there's probably little mileage in an actual game. Lots of good ideas and a great Brummie background - I'd welcome it back.

Irrational hatred is one thing, but criticising Kahn for being German is something else. Called racism.

He's a bit scary on the field sometimes, but has always struck me as a nice guy otherwise. I saw him play against Wales in Cardiff a while ago.

I think it's great.

And it's not just modern art that has no use - no art does. That's why it's art.

We have weird microclimates in Fife: the village where I live is under a foot of snow, but seven miles away the town where I work hasn't had a flake.

On the way to work I drive through localised blizzards on the tops of hills.

This weekend I shall mostly be working on my compost heap. It's my pride and joy since I moved to the country, except it's just not composting at the moment, so it resembles a huge pile of organic rubbish.

Prog / Re: 1424 Stone Cold Crazy............
03 February, 2005, 03:48:40 PM
Prog finally arrived; I also loved the cover. Perhaps partly from seeing a B&W strip go into colour? Makes Hannah look younger than the normal strip.

Dredd: I don't know about this; I like the follow-up to Total War, but the story seemed a bit thin here. There's really not a lot that happens, nor any kind of development of the main arc.

SCB: This is really growing on me, both the setting and the characterisation. In contrast to the above the pacing zips along, but that's not a bad thing.

Slaine: Art is murky, but not as opaque as the plot; I can't follow what's going on.

Cabs: ended too soon; great pig in a kilt.

Dante: not my cup of tea, although the giant monsters bursting out everywhere do liven it up.

Definitely the best prog of the year so far - firing on all cylinders.
