I was very close to meeting Gary, but now won't, at least until he visits Australia.  Dang, now I'll never know what he's really like

Normally I love Cam Kennedy's art, but it seems a bit lacklustre here. I don't know if it needs colour or more detail or what, just seems a bit below par.Otherwise, I agree with Dudley pretty much.
The Orient thing got on my wick; if something is a complete dud, not worth your time etc, why bother telling us about it?  The Who thing was great fun and the feature on the other famous detective with rooms in Baker St was fascinating.

Film & TV / Re: When reviewers get lazy......

Harry Harrison, giving a convention talk in Perth, complained about lazy reviews on the back covers of sf books. He mentioned Harlan Ellison as being a real review slut, willing to provide a nice quote for anything.
Harrison said he'd done two such reviews for money (I mean, nice comments about books he didn't care for for the money). One was for a Robert Silverberg book in which he just said "typical Sylverberg", the other was for 2010 in which he said something like "readers who have been craving a sequel to 2001 will not be disapointed"

the laziest reviews I ever read were by crazed narciccist Toby Young. A lot of the time, he left the play half way through and wrote about that (not entertainingly). Then someone lambasted him for it so half of his next review was about how he was going to stay all the way trhough this time

the poll doesn't mention Thrill Power Overload and the Dredd Files, both of which under-thrill Dead Man Walking in my opinion

it worked fine for me too Will. Thanks for the promotion.  Life is much better since I wrote that column and I found a shitload of 'Classic 2000 AD's in a Salvation Army shop while I was looking for cheap home furnishings. Spookily enough I offloaded my 2000AD collection (about seven progs at that time) on a Salvos shop before leaving for Japan.

yours haunted by 'Vector 13' style coincidences

Happy birthday Leonia!

I'd like to see the movie. I am getting sick of extravagant praise for Douglas Adams...almost every review opens with some gushing about him being a combination of P.G Wodehouse, Groucho Marx, James Joyce (insert name of writer for whom no praise is too much here) and so on. I liked him...just didn't think he was that great.

My thoughts? Well I haven`t read it, but one thought is that there are far too many `what if?` type stories drifting around the world of comics. 1602 may well be brilliant, but the overall effect is a bit suffocating.
I want that essential Punisher. The Ennis/Dillon Punisher stories have made me an addict.
What did you like about 1602?

and yes, it`s ironic considering how shiny he is, but that Silver Surfer was never the brightest light on broadway
