Books & Comics / LATE TO THE PARTY: THE ORIGINALS
14 February, 2007, 11:37:08 PM
Picked this Dave Gibbons book up in Forbidden Planet in Glasgow (it was only eight quid).

I quite enjoyed it - there's some particularly lovely art in it and, despite all the violence, I thought it had a slightly gentle pace to it.

The ending was a pretty good reversal, I thought he was going to go straight but I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

My only quibble, and it's a pretty big one, was that the slightly futuristic setting added nothing to the story (it added plenty to the art and design but nnot actual plot or character choices).  Now, I know you have to take comics as a whole (i.e. the art and design being futturistic should be enough to justify the tale being futuristic) but I did feel slightly short-changed.

But again - worth a punt at eight quid even if all you do is ogle the art.

I don't think you can bag an entire World War Thryllseeker, that doesn't leave much for anyone else.  So if it's still free, I'd like PEGASUS BRIDGE and ARNHEM please.  Failing that, can I have D-DAY in general and THE BULGE.

Is Culloden the most misrepresented battle of all time? Or does that honour go to Waterloo?

"About as likely as Enoch Powell throwing one up Shirley Bassey".

Or words to that effect.

Eighties for Martin Fry, surely?

I for one would pay money to see Gene Hunt doing some detecting in a gold lame(e) suit.

Bah - missed it.

Can't seem to find out when it's repeated either. Any clues?

Dave, I sent you something to your whistler address (I was on the train and it was the only one I could find).  Do you still collect stuff from there?

Help! / Re: MP3 downloads

Oh and well done 54 for standing up for paying for music.  I know it's popular to reverse engineer thieving piracy by saying things like "Music distribution is a rip-off and agaisnt freedom of speech" so it's nice to see someone wanting to pay an artist money for, well, art.

Try explaining that to the kids though - I tried being liberal and just set limits on the amount of stuff they could download in the hope it would get them buying proper stuff and the buggers just downloaded industrial quantities of everything.  "Add/Remove Programs" was swiftly invoked

That's an absolutely stonking bit of music (I first heard it on this great showreel) and works brilliantly with the start of that Battlestar Galactica episode - five minutes of brilliant telly.

Then they spoil it all by saying "Frak you Starbuck, you frack up!".

Very funny but I got the impression that they (Pegg, Wright, Frost et al) enjoyed making the last thirty minutes a lot more than I enjoyed watching it. That can't be right.

But some absolutely inspired gags and agree with PVS, there's definitely a bit of Dredd in there.

Both central characters flawed but likeable(eventually).  Timothy Dalton particularly good along with the comedic gore.

And my goodness, wasn't EVERY British actor/actress in it.

Wasn't so keen on the simple aping of many action movie cliches - taht's what the very lazy SCARY MOVIE films tend to do - but I did enjoy it where they turned them on the head

such as Nick and Danny on the sofa "I know how to turn you off"

My usual TWENTY MINUTES TOO LONG rule applies.

But well worth a visit.

My technique also as I find it too unpleasant when the name calling starts...

Give benefit of doubt.

Then ignore/step back.

Then killfile.

For those of you worried about spelling mistaks and whether or not what you post reads like unsubstantiated crap, there's always the option to preview a post before you actually commit to the post.

Also, I think a lot of posts seem to omit words like "I think" or "in my opinion" or "I feel".  Or are people genuinely confusing their opinions with fact.

Dinner mainly. Brekkie will be at the hotel and lunch provided on the course.

I do recall the marvellously named ABRA KEBABRA chain of kebab shops but have no idea what the food is like.

I'm on a training course in Dublin next week and would like some recommendations for nice, inexpensive places to eat in the city centre (they don't have to be that inexpensive as I'm on expenses).

I've got homework and an exam so don't think I'd be able to make it out to play on most nights but if two or three of you are gathered in Tharg's name, I'll try my best to make it out for a pint.
