Suggestions / Re: Writing To Tharg
06 March, 2007, 01:19:28 PM
What about me then?

I think I've had three. One about KILLER, one about that Judge Dredd family saga thing where the artist drew Vin Deisel.  And one other (but maybe not).

I think I've sent about half a dozen letters and got... (looks round office and counts 2 hero-clix figures and one mousemat).. three published.

Not as good as my hit rate for METRO was (which is about 12 out of 15) which included a run of a week and a picture of a monkey in a hat (and Kelly Brook).  But a retarded monkey can (and does) get letters in Metro so I've kind of given up on that...

"Subdue him with our saurian combat skills".
Yep, it's his dialogue that does for me most of the time (though I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could find me ranting about his political agenda or, heaven forbid, praising some cracking bit of dialogue Pat has written).

I think it's a mistake to have two stories with such blatant political parallels running at the same time. But, and here's a shock, the ABC Warriors isn't annoying me as much as ORIGINS.

I don't think there's a conspiracy - most people genuinely do call it as they see it. If anything, they have a tendency to overpraise rather than over-criticise.

Enjoyed the prog - Rufus' art is a very good fit for Dredd - except the cover, CARRY ON UP THE AMAZONS and MONGROLs speech on the last two pages of ABC.

Film & TV / Movie Trailers - where's best?
14 January, 2007, 12:38:10 AM
Can anyone recommend a site that's good for seeing movie trailers?

One that isn't clogged with adverts, me having to download new things every two minutes and generally safe?

I know at risk of offending anyone who has a kitten here but I thought it was funny and need to use it in a newsletter explaining what we got my (adult and responsible enough to look after one) for Christmas.

I have written a brilliant film script for Judge Dredd.

Why won't you use it?

Megazine / Re: Meg 254: Star Crash!

Cracking Meg - only thing I didn't actively like was the small press thing. It was diverting enough without actually being good.

Dredd was pretty good with some cracking art. Loved the Justice Department censorship.

I'll let Morrison off with the handcuffs thing. Sure, a line about "Your sentence is death anyway, I'm giving you a 25% chance of remission" might have made it read better and the actual door squishing may have been better with Dredd shooting the perp after a couple of panels of him thinking he was getting away.

Devlin Waugh was the standout for me though - Doherty's art is just fantastic and the cum monster is a stroke of genius (more than a few strokes, actually!).

SIMP is very good but I've forgotten who the Judge at the end is? Was she the one done up like a hag? Or was that Low Life.  Is it controversial to say I don't think Miss Anne Thrope is the slightes bit sexy?

Oh and good articles as well - but if you insist on doing Dredd Files - it should be shorter so that it documents the stories at a faster rate then they are produced.

All spoilers statements are true, of course, but I think I prefer it when people can review things without having to give away the actual spoiler.

For example, one chap once told me "There's a great Terminator 2 gag in WAYNE'S WORLD" hence spoling the entire joke. He could have said "There's a great motorccycle cop joke" and I wouldn't have know the punchline.

But yeah, don't look at spoilers threads unless you want things spoilt.

JUM SUIT! - Apologies, I meant CUM suit.

Dredd is the strip that now represents what 2000AD is most about; rocking good stories packed with mad ideas, black humour, biting satire and women in tight leather jum suits (big guns optional).

So if Dredd went, but those ingredients remained in other stories, I think we'd be OK.

Oh and I'm at the stage now where I don't know what would make me give up 2000AD.  Even if it turned completely mince (cf early nineties), I think I'd keep on until the end of the road just for the hell of it.

Prog / Re: Prog 1519 - Mekanised Infantry...

That's a mighty fine picture you've posted there, Funt.

And I think it sums up most of all what I think is missing from the recent (say last half dozen or so) ORIGINS.

It's plain old straight forward.

There aren't any mad twists of genius in there like Blood 'N' Guts - ORIGINS is now full of dull old politicians.  There were mad muties at the start (the Dredd clan with their chins and the huge blob bodied clan elder thing) and there was rain that was on fire but since then it's been dull as dishwater.

I need my epics to have genetically recreated dinosaurs, mental mutants, crazy killer robots, totally implausible heroics in the middle of an apocolyptic war and zombies doing a song and dance number*.

I don't want Dredd in a cave saying "You know Kids, some politicians are mad and bad and will do anything to stay in power".

I'm fighting with the "ORIGINS is actually pretty underwhelming" Block, who's with me?

* OK, maybe not the last one.

Events / Re: Tharg's birthday party?..........
09 January, 2007, 12:52:26 PM
Combining with Bristol would benefit both parties I reckon.

Tharg would get extra punters through the door as a result of it being in Bristol and Bristol would get a lot of extra publicity because of it being the 30th birthday.

In fact, I'm of the opinion that DREDDCON should actually sort of go "on the road" and link up with a different comic festivals if it could e.g. a DREDDCON in Glasgow would tie in nicely with whatever that inveterate but extremely nice drunkard John McShane planned as a replacement for Moniaive.  I sent this suggestion to him but he probably drank it...
