It's interesting also to see scientists talking about the show and being broadly in favour of the concepts used. That shows an element of research and an attempt to make the show feel real rather than just hand-waving everything away.

Well, that first episode did the business. I can't believe there are only five more, but I can't wait for the next one. Hey, Chibnall: THIS is how you do it.

Quite. Cut off the head and the Tories will do what they did with Johnson, claiming they're a new and different party now, rather than one that's been in power and doing increasingly shitty things since 2010.

Labour and the Lib Dems in particular (along, to a lesser degree with the Greens and Plaid) really need to get their shit together, figure out how to cooperate, and educate voters on how one "hold your nose" election could eradicate the Tories and build a system that makes it very difficult for them to ever get into power alone again.

Film & TV / Re: Disney To Reboot Firefly.

I'm not sure I care anymore about new Firefly. I was bitterly disappointed when it was cancelled. Then we got Serenity, which wasn't the best standalone film, but it was a cracking season 2 finale. When that was canned, my hope was the gap would be filled in the comics, but they turned out to be bollocks. And although there was a short window in which they could have kicked things off again, it was clearly never going to materialise.

The question is whether it's a strong enough property within itself for a reboot. I mean, possibly, but an awful lot of Firelfy hung on its cast, the characters, and the direction of the show (settings; relatively grown-up; a sense of relative realism)—most of which is likely going to be for the chop. At which point you've got, what, a story about some scrappy folks trying to get by in a sort-of Western take on outer space, while avoiding the lawmakers from the inner planets?

I suspect part of the above reaction stems from The Expanse, which did much of what Firefly tried to achieve, only far, far better. I'm going to miss that once the upcoming final series aired. I guess at least we'll get an ending there, rather than the show just stopping.

Quote from: Tiplodocus on 09 December, 2021, 11:44:12 AMWhat would the Radio 2 equivalent of Doctor Who be?
Big Finish? Although I've never listened to those, so have no idea how good (or not) they are.

I recall Chibnall's sense of logic was summed up way back, with that episode that featured spiders as foes. The Doctor had a go at someone with a gun, but the end result was that the spiders, rather than being humanely killed, would instead starve to death, after having spent a lot of time eating each other.

Quote from: wedgeski on 08 December, 2021, 11:20:11 AMI say all this with due acknowledgement of the fact that it is *much* easier to re-write a story after you've seen it fail.
I dunno. I don't write fiction but would agree with my own writing work that there are always improvements you can see with the benefit of hindsight. Still, before I file something, I do tend to make sure everything makes sense. Sometimes, it doesn't quite hang together—and editors tend to catch that, at which point I rewrite something to make it work.

There's no logic in Flux. Stuff just happens because it happens. When you get to the point of "well, it doesn't matter because timey wimey" or "it's just a kid's show" or "it's Doctor Who so *hand wave*", which it appears Chibnall did, you've already lost.

Fair point. It's just how rapidly they were fired past us in Flux.

It was intended to be a multi-part book exploring the origins of Dredd's world, presumably until someone realised it was creator-owned and would therefore leave said origins outside of the publisher's ownership.

"It's going to be tricky for The Doctor to get out of that situation!"

"Actually, it's going to be super easy—barely an inconvenience!"

"Oh, really?"

^ Suitable for 90%+ of Chibnall Doctor Who cliffhangers.

I don't know how many people here are familiar with Ryan George's Pitch Meeting series on YouTube, but I can imagine him ripping into this series with much gusto.

Night Zero was a series of cliches, but did that filler thing well. It wins for me over the fleeting From Grace.

Armageddon always felt off to me. I'm glad it died on the vine, because what we have now as the Dreddworld backstory is so much better.

Hunted didn't grab be nearly as much as Jaegir, but it was a solid yarn and a superior story for me.
