Books & Comics / Re: All-Star Superman #1

Yep, still buying the lot. Klarion's been a particular favourite, but The Guardian, Zatanna & Shining Knight have all been great fun. Can't wait to get my hands on Mister Miracle & The Bulleteer...

All DC comics seem packed with adverts now, and so many ruin the pacing and rhythm of a story - double-page ads before a big splash, that kind of thing.

I'm tempted by All-Star Superman, especially after reading Morrison's list of things he believed were essential to writing the character. I'll probably pick it up, but at the moment I'll make do with my shiny new DVD of the animated series (great stuff, BTW)

...or, alternatively, you could say it's just the latest iteration of the badly flawed Sonic Adventure series...

Just a quick piece from Newsarama that may be of interest to fans of Frazer Irving's work. Gorgeous preview images, and this is definitely on my order list for the art alone...

Film & TV / Re: Little Britain

JEB --

IMO, a lot of it is in the execution, for example:

Navid, the Asian shopkeeper in Still Game, is a character written by a pair of white Scots, whose characterisation treads perilously close to lazy stereotyping. In less talented - or more malicious - hands it could be awful, but there's a great deal of affection and wit in the writing and performance, and there's never a feeling that you're laughing at him because he's Asian.

There's a similar thing going on in parts of Little Britain. For example, Andy isn't there to be mocked because he's disabled - in fact he's pretty much the hero in the sketches - and much of the comedy comes from his slightly dense but well-meaning carer being oblivious to Andy's swimming/parachuting/etc.

Dudly --

That's actually an interesting point - how do you think it is that two white comedians are getting away with blacking up etc.? I don't see anything in the show, or in them, that makes that acceptable...

The laughter track is a fucking pain in the arse, and the show was the usual mixed bag - some very funny, surreal moments, a bit of well-observed comedy and an awful lot of "aren't we terribly naughty" bad taste moments (pissing OAP, a blacked-up David Walliams, Matt Lucas in full "Asian" makeup etc.)

It has its moments, but it's not the comedy masterpiece it thinks it is.

Well, it wasn't Genesis of the Daleks, no, but it was an entertaining enough little bridge between the last series and the next.

Mm - it is still a problem, isn't it? Can anyone who owns the DVDs (I'm waiting on the box set) comment on whether this is just a transmission issue, or whether it's just LOUD MUSIC?

Well, that was brief but interesting. A nice OTT post-regeneration Doctor, much in the vein of Tom Baker or Patrick Troughton, and a little bit of a hint as to the way Rose is going to deal with the new Doctor.

David Tennant was pretty solid, if a little bit close to an impersonation of Eccleston's Doctor - perhaps deliberately?

Nice wee taste to tide us over until The Christmas Invasion...
