An insane Humble Books Bundle this week. IDW/Top Shelf. All Lock & Key, all Top Shelf era LoEG, both March volumes, two Parker GNs, and assorted odds and ends for under $20 American.

This is currently the only way to get LoEG titles DRM-Free I think.

There are quite a few levels of comfort between being crushed to death by a brutal dictatorship and dying 'free' in a radioactive desert.

The refinery guys from Road Warrior were getting along just fine before Lord Humungus and his gang turned up to kick their sand castle over. They were working together as a community of equals working toward the long term survivability of the group. And when push came to shove they fought and sacrificed for one another.

And Freedom should never be a luxury.

QuoteYeah, Aunty Entity came to mind several times when writing that lengthy post about Immortan Joe. They've got very different approaches but both her and Joe are essentially trying to do the same thing in response to the global catastrophe.

Yes, they're both trying to subvert human freedom for their own personal gain in the short term. If you think anything either has done is to help humanity survive long term, you're not really paying attention. Anything that looks like it benefits the whole is just bread and circuses to keep the populus from revolting.

We actively see Entity supressing any challenge to her power by the way she deals with Master Blaster. Master's trying to keep the power on for humanity's benefit, Entiry only sees it as another way to control people.

If by 'Feminist' they mean 'where women are treated like people with complicated motivations and characterizations instead of being treated as objects or set dress'. Then yes. It's a noticeably 'feminist' movie.

Jimbo, yes he managed to build some semblance of order. But A) there's no reason to belive that totalitarian dictatorship is the ONLY way to preserve order, even in the apocalypse; B) his form of rule is inevitably doomed to decline and failure, because to maintain his fiefdom he'd be forced to eliminate all dissent and opposition as a matter of course.  So once Joe dies all practical leadership dies with him. The power vacuum alone will kill what he,s built. not to mention how such a repressed society has no hope of future progress. His kingdom's long term survivability is as much of a sham as he is.

And most importantly, C) Ends don't justfy means.

So for my own curiosity I downloaded the currently avalible 'Jump Starter Pack' issue just to see what chapters they were previewing for new readers. To my shock these aren't the first chapters of all the current series, they're actually close to current chapters, dropping new readers right in the middle of the latest arcs. This isn't as new reader friendly as I expected.  I'm curious as to your take on this Jackstarr, and if it comes across as too overwhelming.

Also, curious as to how you're reading Jump. Smart phone? Tablet? PC?

Well, there is a 'Jump Starter' free issue that has the first chapters of the major current titles. I'd start with that, just to get a taste for what you are in for.

A little advice, many of the series running in Jump have been running for a while, the shortest (My Hero Academia) having been running almost a year, the longest (One Piece) over 10 I think. Unlike Western comics, were accessibility for new readers is somewhat important, it's not as much in manga. Story arcs can last year's (I started reading Jump three years ago, Straw Hat Luffy is STILL in Dressrosa). There's an expectation that readers will go back to the beginning with the collected editions.

That said, it's not impossible to just jump right into the middle of everything and just pick it up as you go. Which is what I did. It might be a bit confusing and frustrating at first, but in 4 or 5 weeks you'll probably know if you dig it enough to keep going. English Jump does put up recap pages before every chapter to help get you up to speed on recent events and characters.

So yeah, Jump Starter issue first. Then I'd go for the May 11th issue, as it's got the first chapter of Straigten Up, and the kick off of the latest back to new titles.

Any further questions, Hawkmonger and I will be around I'm sure.

For me, there's something about this whole Battleworld / Incursion concept that is just utterly, utterly stupid (even in the context of a fictional comic book universe).
I can't get over it.

Concidering the original Secret Wars was a tie-in to a toy line, and Battleworld merely an excuse to get all these characters together for said toy line. I totally get what you're saying. It's hard to take It seriously.

I was really liking Straighen Up, right up until 'dancing gives you an excuse to touch girls'

And then flamboyance.

God damnit Japan.

QuoteSuffice to say, that is NOT how it works in comics.

Cheers

Jim

Yeah, its pretty sad how comics are still trapped in the same business model as the prose pulps of the 1930s.

Anything new I happen to like starting in Weekly Shonen Jump.

A new wave of new series are rolling out over the next few weeks. So... worry time!
