Books & Comics / Re: New Comic Book Day Megathread

Now that things have stabilized in terms of line-up WSJ is pretty solid right now.

And I'll agree on Hi-Fi getting better week to week.

Its core premise is still SUPER flimsy though.

General / Re: Why doesn't Judge Rico get his own strip?
20 December, 2014, 09:34:52 PM
The scenes between Rico and Dolman in Brothers of the Blood always struk me as Rico being considerably less cynical then Dredd himself. More understanding/sympathetic of Dolman's circumstances then Dredd, etc...

Like when Dolman choos to leave Rico was some what proud of him, where Dredd was closer to disappointed.

In fact the pressure of being 'the next Judge Dredd' seems lik something you can hang a whole series on.

And saying that such strips would only be 'superfluous' or 'irrelevant' strikes me as more of a lack of imagination then anything else.

They should do a Rico/Beeny/Giant 'team' strip of some kind with the three of them working together to solve tough cases. Throw some Dolman in there too as some kind of city liaison or something.

Books & Comics / Re: new name for a new age in comics

We're in the early days of the Digital Age.

Also, comics aren't in Film/TV/Games. That doesn't make any sense.

SUPER-HEROES are making a big splash in Film/TV/Games right now. But that's a genre, not the medium.

Meh. I thought Death had a decent send off in My Name is Death, and frankly find the other three Dark Judges more interesting without their leader (and was honestly rather disappointed in their lack of doing anything after returning in Day of Chaos).

Oh I'm sure Dark Justice will be good. But I'm not too hot on the idea of the return of Death.

Maybe they're retiring the big cover date because of the impending Prog number doubling?

My Digital Pulls for 12/03/14

2000 AD 1910 - Getting close to the end of the year. The current line-up has been pretty solid. Ichabod Asreal and Stickleback are on top form. Grey Suit actually has gotten interesting over the last few weeks. But it sure was a slow burn getting there.
TECH JACKET 6 - This series has gone in some wild directions I never really expected.
TOOTH & CLAW 2 - Issue 1 of this soundly takes one of my 'best single issue of the year' slots. Issue 1 was exceptional, lets see if issue 2 can keep the ball in the air.
WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP 1 - Another year of WSJ kicks off with another new 'Jump Start' title fresh from Japan. Gakkyu Hotei - School Judgement is easily the best of this latest crop. It doesn't hurt that it has a ton of shades of Phoenix Wright's outlandish court room drama. The other two new titles, E-Robot (sci-fi comedy) and Takujo No Ageha (Ping-Pong sports manga) are kind of bad. What I can't get over is how similar most of these new titles are. They're all high-school based, and they all manage to be really creepy with sex based comedy. Its really annoying.

E-Robot is like Dr Slump but without any subtly.

General / Re: NOVEMBER ART COMP - I DRAW DEAD PEOPLE

QuoteLara certainly did get a grave marker Adventurer and it's the same one in both pictures.

See, that's what I thought. And with that key visual its not unusual that two different people (and probably many more) come to an independently similar composition as a tribute.

Did Lara ever have a grave marker like that depicted in the comic itself? Legit question as I can't recall off the top of my head.

You might also want to try the Comic Walker app by KADOKAWA. Its got a lot of various stuff, and chapters don't disappear after X weeks like MangaBox.

Admittedly I only read Mobile Suit Gundam: Origin. But that alone is worth it.

Books & Comics / Re: Know any realistic superhuman books?

I haven't read it. But Mark Millar's MPH might fit. I suspect its his usual brand of 'bystanders are not impressed by your superpowers. Loser.' superhuman stories.

Kurt Busik's Superman Secret Identity is also exactly that. But this one is actually fantastic.

Film & TV / Re: Last movie watched...
20 November, 2014, 12:13:19 PM
Last night I sat down to finally watch Fritz Lang's Complete Metropolis. I've actually had the Blu-ray release for several years, but have been sitting on it because I knew watching it was going to be... an event. Especially with its two and a half hour run time.

This movie... what they accomplished in 1927... just mind boggling. Its a work of art. Its unfortunately that a good 30 minutes of run time is of really damaged quality. But its amazing that those segments continue to exist at all.

The effects work in this movie defy expectations, the shear amount of money they blew making this movie is very apparent. It puts even talky era movies 10 years after it to shame. At the same time you can totally tell that they were still trying to figure out this whole 'moving pictures' thing. Its pacing is rather lumbering. And its message a bit sugar sweat. While also being pretty poignant? And its final act descends into a very cliche 'hero vs villain to save the girl' moment that was rather distracting.

But this is a must see movie.

General / Re: Is Johnny Alpha dead now?
13 November, 2014, 11:01:41 AM
He 'died' at a major turning point, right in the middle of a major story arc. The very notion that anyone would believe that he is actually dead again, four arcs after his big todo resurrection is alien to me.

I've actually been enjoying Life and Death, a lot more then I expected actually. Though I actually do wish Johnny was actually dead and the series was about Middenface and Precious rick rollicking across the universe.
