Announcements / Re: Judge Dredd Movie is Green Lit!
10 April, 2010, 02:30:44 PM
A Dredd movie doesn't need to be a massive $200m spectacular to work - the Dredd concept allows for many different types of stories - and personally I'd much rather it be a sci-fi thriller than an all-action Apocalypse War or Dark Judges CGI-fest.

The last time round, the only real option was the big budget blockbuster route, but film-making has really opened up in recent years - District 9, Sunshine and Kick-Ass have shown what is possible with a relatively small budget, and the Minty fan film looks very cool, and that has been put together for virtually nothing.

The Nikolai Dante book listings on Amazon is a mess and has been for years - this isn't the first time someone has had to post here to ask for clarification.

Multiple versions of the same book, with differing covers, and just to make things more confusing some are nonsensically subtitled with 'v.2' or 'part 2' - possibly a hangover from when Dante was going to be serialised in slim hardback volumes.

Rebellion must have lost a fair few sales because of this sort of thing - they should hassle Amazon to sort it out.

In The Chaperone, Arkady was attacked by a horde of savages. He killed them all with bio blades, and then made a cryptic statement about being his "father's son, or the child is father to the man. I'm not sure, it's quite complicated".

He then murdered the only witness, his fiance, to cover up the secret.

QuoteI know the big revelation of
Arkady being Dmitri
has been predicted here,  but it's still a fantastic plot development.

It's not really a spoiler, as it has already been revealed in the story The Chaperone from a few years back.

I remember quite liking Inferno, Frankenstein Division etc when I was younger, but then they were some of the first Dredd stories I'd read, so I had no frame of reference, and I was a teenage boy, which is clearly the audience they were writing for.

Millar and Morrison's Dredd work is kind of dumb and ludicrous, but it wasn't boring, which is something that can't be said for some other writers attempts at the character.

Crusade is fucking awful, though.

QuoteYeah, this is mystery territory for me as well, with 10-14 being all stuff I read as a kid.

The overall standard is still pretty high. Nightmares, the Steve Dillon-illustrated, 5-part Necropolis epilogue (that has unbelievably never been reprinted until now) is essential stuff, and La Placa Rifa is iconic Dredd. Return of the King is also good stuff - one of Ennis' better Dredd scripts. But there's a few stinkers too - Emerald Isle being the prime example.

Volume 16 (the majority of which will be made up of short Garth Ennis stories) is where we're going to hit distinctly rocky territory - the democracy arc being by far the highlight. I'm still buying it, though!

I hope that when it comes to dealing with Purgatory and Inferno, they will adopt the same strategy as The Dead Man and Necropolis. The actual Dredd story will appear in the Case Files and the spin-off will be given its own collection.

I'd imagine Purgatory turning up as a Meg reprint around that time being more likely than getting its own 'proper' collection.

Millar was on the Radio 5Live film review show today - entertaining stuff - you can listen on iPlayer, or download the podcast:

Off Topic / Re: The Political Thread

Whats the betting that some sort of massive facebook election protest/prank thing gets rolling in the next week or two?

Am going to register to vote for the first time ever this year. I'm undecided - but there is no chance in hell that I am voting for either of the main two parties.

Yep, the last third of the book is all Megazine stuff.

QuoteI'd like to know the reason behind this

Neither are credited as Dredd stories, so technically they count as spin-offs. I expected America to be included as its so iconic, and also because its so tied in with the continuity of the main strip.

I'm not whinging, mind - I already own the America and Kenny Who? collections. I was just curious to see how they'd tackle it - there are arguments for and against its inclusion.

This just arrived - yay! Always nice to get one, even more so on a Friday!

The first thing to say is that both 'America' and 'Beyond Our Kenny' are not included in this book - I'm not sure whether this was deliberate or not.

The following stories are included:

Theatre of Death
Nightmares
What I Did During Necropolis, by PJ Maybe
The Revised Macbeth
Death Aid (published here all in one block, with the 'interludes' from the original publication following after)
First Offence
Fixing Daddy
La Placa Rifa
Driller Killer
The Apartment
Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home
Emerald Isle
Return of the King

Midnite's Children
I Singe the Body Electric
Black Widow
The Gipper's Big Night

News / Re: Rebellion Cuts Staff Rumour

As I understand it, it's distribution only - Rebellion will still put the books together and the design and format will remain the same.

S&S appear to have a little more input in the new US line of 2000ad gns they are also distributing.

Well, looks like my copy won't be here until Monday now.

Very interested to see how this book has been compiled. It would actually work out better for me if America isn't included, as I already own the standalone book, but also I feel that it should be included for completeness sake.

I think PJ will frame Cardew for the attempted assassination of Sinfield.
