No official word yet, but my copy of CF15 might (fingers crossed) arrive tomorrow morning - if so I will post the complete contents.

Didn't spot too much 2000ad stuff apart from the bottom half of a McMahon Dredd and a Durham Red poster, but I did see the nice little dig in the cinema scene at the beginning of the film - the LED board showing the attractions predominantly displayed The Spirit 3!

QuoteWhether he acts is perhaps the pertinent question; at a time there would have been no doubt he would stick to the law, but now I'm not so sure. Or Dredd may not come back and let them deal with the fallout themselves; a tactical move?

I fully expect Dredd to throw his all into the investigation. He's got no love for Sinfield, but he's a professional and wouldn't let his personal dislike of the man get in the way of his duty.

Sinfield may be a conniving little scrote, but he is still Chief Judge, and any issues Dredd has with the CJ will be pursued through the proper channels.

QuoteDredd becoming Cheif judge

I doubt it. My money would be on Hershey coming back once Sinfield has been dealt with.

QuoteMaybe's robot will eventually kill pj and take over as him, having gotten the taste for murder?!

I would hope that PJ will live to fight another day.

QuoteHow about Beeny? I reckon at least council of five

Nah - she's not long out of the academy, probably won't even make senior judge for a few years yet. In the long term, I reckon she's destined for big things, providing she lives that long.

Quotemaybe (pun absolutely intended) sinfeild will try and lay the blame on pj in case he (dredd)finds out about sinfields little visit to dan francisco with the sld 51 or whatever its called without realising he is correct unintentionally.

I doubt it - everyone, including Dredd, thinks PJ Maybe has been dead for years.

QuoteBut, on another note...there were quite a few guffaws in the cinema at scenes that I didn't think were particularly funny nor intended to be, and it wasn't just the teenage boys 'hurrr!'.

When for example Kick Ass got stabbed in the stomach, then hit by a car, some people found it seemingly hilarious. It was the same with some of the more gorey scenes; not appeciative of the bad guys getting it, just that it would seem a limb was chopped off is inherently funny.

Went to see this at the weekend with friends (a mix of boys and girls), and we all laughed the whole way through -
Big Daddy's death scene
being pretty much the only thing in the film that was explicity serious or moving.

There were a lot of moments where I wasn't sure if a particular scene was actually supposed to be funny, but as the overall tone of the film is so demented even the moments of extreme violence provoked laughter. Also, it's worth remembering that laughter, shock and fear are closely linked emotionally so I think it's a natural reaction in some cases.

Anyway, great, great film. The only bits that failed to convince were the cringe-inducing romantic scenes, and in a film full on masked vigilantes
on jetpacks
and child assassins the least realistic bits for me were when the hot girl hung out in the comic shop and talked about Scott Pilgrim!

Was great to see Nic Cage back on form! Brought back happy memories of his early work, and I'll even forgive the blatant thieving of 28 Days Later's soundtrack!

Absolutely no complaints from me - every story in the latest prog is fantastic, and I hope this line up continues for a while yet!

Special mention to Dredd and Dante, with Damnation Station being my third favourite at the moment.

The cover was the best one in aaaaages, too!

Interesting turn of events in Tour of Duty -
genius plotting by Wagner how Dredd's return from exile has been unknowingly facilitated by PJ Maybe! Funny how Sinfield's predicament has forced him to admit it that he knows that Dredd is the best judge there is - it makes his treatment of the big man all the more despicable!
Lovely episode of Dante (excellent to have Si Fraser back!), but bittersweet as we all know that it won't last. Personally, I'm rooting everyone and really don't want any of the cast to die, so the next few weeks will be tough! I would imagine that Arkady/Dimitri has sort kind of deal with the White Army.... Still think there's a chance that Vladimir and Konstantin will redeem themselves by the end.

To me, the Meg definitely seemed to really go through an identity crisis between 1998 and 2004/5 - first there was the 'Britain's Hardest Comic' Preacher/Sin City era, where it felt a little desperate, and that the mag was clinging on for dear life - then many years of seemingly endless relaunches and a confusing 'mixed bag' approach - reprint (some 2000ad, some non-2000ad, new strips (some set in Dredd's world, some not). There was some good stuff during this time, but a definite lack of focus.

I must admit I drifted away during this period, returning around issue 250 for Dredd: Cadet. I found the £2.99 model to be very unsatisying - the choice of reprints seemed like barrel scraping, and the decision to include small press stuff was very ill-advised imo.

Since Matt Smith took over, and the £4.99 relaunch a couple of years ago, things seemed to have settled into something more comfortable. With the reprint relegated to it's own separate comic (which comes in a very nice collectible format), it feels like the Meg itself can hold its head up a little more. The quality of the strips is pretty solid, a few duffers aside, and there are two Dredd strips running in each issue, of which I very much approve - anyone remember that issue back in volume 2 that Dredd didn't even appear in?!?!).

It's not perfect, but imo its far more consistent and focused than it has been in the past.

Games / First glimpse of New Dredd Game?

Just saw this post on io9 - I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but it seems a slightly odd thing to post...

It's just some concept art from an 'unspecified game project'. The hint in the article title seems to suggest that the author knows more than he is letting on....

Help! / Re: Casefiles/agency files etc
01 April, 2010, 03:19:01 PM
The only stront book to avoid is The Early Cases, the material in that book is covered in The S/D Files.

With the Dredd books there is also a little bit of overlap, but on the whole you're fine to get both the Case Files and the colour volumes.

With Robo-Hunter, Judge Anderson and Rogue Trooper, it's a bit more confusing - they were originally published as slim volumes, but are now being republished as complete case file style volumes, so just stick to the big chunky books and you'll be fine!

The Complete PJ Maybe is well worth a look, blue - it seems to be another out of print book, but you can get it fairly cheap second hand on Amazon.

Since that book was published, there have been further PJ adventures. The Gingerbread Man, which details his rise to Mayor, is in the Dredd: Henry Flint Collection, and his other appearances - Emphatically Evil: The Life and Crimes of PJ Maybe, What I Did For Crissmas, The Spirit of Christmas and ...Regrets will presumably be collected in the Tour of Duty: Backlash trade which is out in September.

After being so impressed with Out Law, I'm thinking that I'd like to go back and re-examine some of Rob's other Dredd scripts, but I'm struggling to think of any other than the one about Dredd's biographer, which was good if a little too in-jokey.

I think there's also the one about the alien invasion and the explorer bloke with the bandages, am I right? Any others I should look out for?
