News / JUDGE DREDD FILM (THE LATEST NEWS)
24 December, 2003, 11:19:33 PM
Hi Guys

I have just been back to the Shoreline site, looking for updates on the Dredd film and the site has changed slightly.

I don't know if this is old news but both synopsises have also changed drastically. I know they changed a while back but I think they've changed again. If you look under film library, you get the choice of Shoreline Films and Riptide. I'm not sure what connection Riptide has to Shoreline but they seem to be producing the two Dredd movies. They are both still entitled Possession and Dredd Reckoning but from what I remember, these two new synopsises differ greatly from what they first had up there. From what I remember, I much prefer these two new ones, especially Dredd Reckoning, as the first draft was a carbon copy of the Stallone film.

My only minor concern is that the genre they appear under is Action rather than Sci-Fi. I do hope that they are not going to tone down on the special effects and costume budgets in order to save money.

Have a read and let me know what you think.

Oh and Merry Christmas to you all.

Hi guys

I just realized that I do not have the address for the Dreddcon in Oxford. Also, is it easy to find off the M40. I'm leaving at 9.30.

General / 2000ADs collectability
29 November, 2003, 07:22:23 PM
I promised to continue from my last thread entitled "The total opposite of near mint" it's taken me a while but before I start, I would like to briefly respond to Paulconscotts comments.

Paul you said "It was investment and speculation which seriously damaged American comics in the early nineties. It put people out of business and killed titles."

I really do not believe that this is true. I am 38 now and have been collecting/reading/investing in comics since I was about 8 years old. I had a passion for reading comics up until about ten years ago and believed that I would never stop reading, no matter what girlfriends, parents and non-comic reading friends said about my hobby. Then about 10 years ago, Marvel and DC started to do crossover stories. This had been done before and was always welcome; everybody wanted to know who would win in a fight between The Hulk and The Thing or The Silver Surfer and Captain Marvel. But what these two companies did was take that to the extreme. Eventually, if you wanted to follow a story, you had to buy about six titles to keep track. Now, my favourite title, the Uncanny Xmen, crosses over with so many other x-titles, that I really do not know who is who or what is going on. I can honestly say that I get very little pleasure from reading any of the x-titles and I believe that is true of most fans. Ironically, the collectors and investors may be what's keeping the titles going, since they keep on buying as they don't want to break there collection. That is the only reason I carry on buying The Uncanny X-men. I refuse to buy all the other titles; hence I don't know what is going on in the one I buy. It used to be that the stories followed on from each title and I would buy the Fantastic Four, The Avengers etc and look forward to the next instalment.

How can Marvel and DC expect new, younger readers to come onboard, it must be so confusing and boring for them to try to follow what is happening. As kids we used to choose our favourite title and follow each story month after month and to get us interested in other titles, occasionally they used to do a crossover. The comic companies blame the advent of computer games, taking over from comics. I don't believe this is true, just like the introduction of film never took over from music, they co-existed and the same people that enjoyed listen to music enjoyed going to the cinema. Likewise, the same people that enjoyed reading comics are probably the same ones that now enjoy playing computer games. Instead of targeting that audience, they are blaming them. If they started producing comics that they could follow, these kids might start picking up a comic on a regular basis, instead of flicking through one and thinking great art but what the f%*k is going on here and never bothering to try and find out.

Paul, you also said "I also think it's a contributing factor to the stagnation of comics. People will spend hundreds of pounds on an old comic, which could actually buy them hundreds of new comics, but they probably aren't as interested in new titles"

The people who have hundreds of pounds to spend on a comic, probably have a few pounds to spare on the latest editions. Also, there are two types of investors. There's the comic reader/collector who has cottened on to the fact that what they are reading may one day increase in value and then there is the investor who has no interest in reading comics (and there are not many of them.) There are no children/teenagers, to my knowledge, that are saving up their pocket money, until they have a few hundred pounds in their pockets and then rushing out and buying a prog 2 of 2000AD and then neglecting to buy the latest prog from the newsagent.

You also complained about your prog 3, which is not in good condition. You will just have to face up to the fact that it is collectors who, by and large are also investors, who will keep most of the old comics in good condition. You will also have to face up to the fact that anything that is collectable and is also old, will increase in value. As a result this will also contribute to making comics collectable, because at the moment the majority are certainly not readable. I really believe that it is the investors who have kept the comic market alive over the past few years. If comics had no other value, then I believe Marvel and DC would have killed the market about 5 years ago.

I just hope 2000AD does not go down that route.

I think this thread has gone on too long again and I have not broached the subject, which the threads titles was about.

I'll start another thread, some other time, entitled, "Finally, 2000ADs Collectability"

Thank you for listening.

General / The total opposite of Near Mint
16 November, 2003, 12:43:22 AM
Hi guys, have a look at this link to prog three on ebay. Why would you bother trying to sell it? This looks like it has been through a washing machine that uses acid instead of water, and then put through a drier that uses fire instead of air!

I've had various debates on the board, arguing in defence of the high prices paid for Near Mint copies of prog two. Some boarders have complained that the people who buy or invest in the early issues, store them away, keeping them out of the light and never showing them to anyone, thereby depriving true fans of the opportunity to enjoy back issues. As part of my defence I have said that the near mint copies are being stored away for future generations to enjoy and that there are many readable copies available on ebay. As if to prove my point, this one is for you guys. So anyone who enjoys reading on the toilet, you'll have something to wipe your arse with afterwards! Now that's thrill power.

Help! / Like the subject says.......Help!
28 September, 2003, 11:47:00 PM
I've noticed over the passed few months that new boarders arrive and they start a thread by saying, "Now I know you've probably discussed this before but...."

Well I'm not a new boarder and I know that this has been discussed before but it's bothering me.

Prog 1208. Most people I meet at conventions seem to think that it's scarce because a lot of these progs were flood damaged but recently I spoke to someone who said that there was an official response from 2000AD on their letters page. They said that W H Smiths returned a large quantity by mistake and they got pulped. Does anyone know if this is true and which prog it appeared in? Also, does anyone from MK12 know how many progs survived?

Cheers ears.

Help! / Can anyone translate French (Re: JD Movie)
15 September, 2003, 09:27:58 PM
Hi Guys

I have been doing some research and come across the following website, but it's all in French. I think it's something to do with the Judge Dredd movie.

Can you translate the following:

26/02/2002 : Selon le site Cineinfo.fr, Jean Reno aurait ?t? contact? pour jouer dans une suite au film Judge Dredd, dont le r?le principal ?tait tenu pat Sylverster Stallone. Pour incarner ce fameux justicier dans un second volet, les producteurs auraient fait appel ? Jean Reno, mais l'acteur n'a toujours pas donn? sa r?ponse. Esp?rons qu'il refusera !!

Prog / Hey, I've finally figured it out
14 September, 2003, 07:56:10 PM
Hi Guys, I've put my thinking cap on and I think I know what the new Judge Dredd graphics are related to.
(See link)

It's just so obvious, I've put 2 and 2 together and apart from looking like a couple of ducks, I've come up with 4.

Think about it, we've had all the movie hype, with synopsis's being written and then changed, and then there is the talk of the movies being in pre-production for so long now, but very little evidence of anything being done, even the most loyal of us have begun to be suspicious. Combine this with the fact that there has been no talk or even rumours of casting and also the fact that Disney has lost the cartoon rights, yes you've guessed it..... Shoreline are making an animation rather then a traditional Judge Dredd movie.

We've all said or thought that this would be the ideal route to take with Dredd and it seems that they've been listening.

Unfortunately, few of you may get to read this, as both Shoreline and Rebellion are keeping this under their hats and do not want it to be public knowledge, so I suspect that Wake or MK12 may get this thread removed and you'll never know. But it will confirm to me what I already believe. For those of you that manage to read this thread before it's removed, you heard it hear first.

Does everyone agree or do you have any theories of your own?

Now while I'm here, if any of you want any crimes solved, murders, robberies, etc, just drop me a line, I'll see what I can do.

Have a look at the thread entitled "Another Dredd Game" and can you shed some light? It's driving me crazy, we've heard nothing from Rebellion.

I hate those guys, they never tell us anything, until we've heard it somewhere else first.

Suggestions / The Judge Dredd Megazine
26 June, 2003, 08:41:13 PM
Hi Guys, although I visit the board regularly, this is one of my rare moments of input. I am moved to write since I am getting pissed off with the Megazine. It's full of reprints, with pages of text explaing the history of 2000AD, various other crap and very little Dredd. The Megazine has been on the verge of being scrapped on more than one occassion and I doubt very much whether it can survice much longer in this format. I for one am considering not bying it any more. At the moment I buy it more out of habit and not wanting to break my collection. I get very little enjoyment out of it.

As a suggestion, why not go back to it's roots. Scrap all the extra stories, reduce the page size and page numbers. Maybe reduce it to American comic book size and just print a Judge Dredd story every month, American style. Stick to the 2000AD universe and perhaps do some cross overs with 2000AD. This is a format that works in America, so why not do it over here. Rebellion may then start selling larger volumes in the States.

The cost of producing the comic will be grately reduced, more people will be able to afford to buy it (The current ?3.95 is a bit expensive for a comic, sorry very expensive!) Circulation will increase and I'm sure in the long run they'd make more money from this size comic than the lumbering dinosour it has become. I read somewhere that it's $18 to subscribe too the megazine in New Zealand, that's ridiculous, who'd pay that?

Any new stories that were introduced in the megazine could just be switched to 2000AD.

Anyway, just a thought but this month's edition is probably my last.

I really would love to see an American sized Judge Dredd comic, that is in keeping with the 2000AD Judge Dredd Universe. How many other readers would agree?

Help! / Outlook Express
08 June, 2003, 01:10:45 AM
Hi Guys

I've got a problem with Outlook Express and you guys have helped me before with other technical questions.

I have created a new group whom I want to send emails to but I don't want them to be able to see everyone else that the email has gone to. How do I send an email to the group and hide the other email addresses as well as the names of the other recipients?

I know that this is not the right place to ask but the help lines can take 24 hours to respond and I need to know tonight. I hope somebody knows, you guys are my last hope.

Many thanks in advance.

News / Mega Cities in The Sun
26 May, 2003, 04:35:23 PM
Hi Guys, I thought you might be interested in this. I was just reading a copy of The Sun today and notched up another prediction for 2000AD. Apparently one of Britain's top architects is predicting that we'll all be living in huge tower blocks that will be cities within themselves. They'll have schools, cinemas, shopping malls; they would even have parks complete with grass and tress. These huge tower blocks would be over 2,600 foot tall and house up to 55,000 people, with it's own security force.

Now I can't remember which prog but I seem to remember an idea like this being touted in 2000AD!

Help! / Re: 2000AD annual Circa 1978
09 May, 2003, 04:49:28 PM
I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out. I have just won the 2000AD 1978 annual on ebay and it is the only one I have seen without the date on the front cover or spine. Also there is no price on the inside corner, just a white triangle, everything else is exactlly as it should be. Does anyone know if this is a one-off, or if there was a batch printed like this, or any reason why it is like this.

Cheers guys, I know you love a mystery.

News / Judge Dredd on TV tonight
22 April, 2003, 12:38:36 AM
I Just noticed they are showing Judge Dredd on Channel 5 tonight at 9pm. Like most people, I was not a fan of Stallone as Dredd and thought he did'nt pull it off that well but the movie is a great Sci-Fi flick in it's own right and was well made with brilliant special effects, so I know I'll be watching.
