Events / More Dreddcon Requests
29 September, 2005, 02:35:57 AM
I was planning on going to this years Dreddcon but due to family committments cannot make it. There were a few questions that I wanted answers to and would be grateful if other boarders could submit these questions and feedback on the board. If anybody else cannot make it and also has questions, why not post them here. I'll be back on Monday to see if there are any answers.

Here are the questions.

(1) When is Nikolai Dante coming back?
(2) Will they be commissioning Simon Fraser to do anymore Dante? I know he would like to and I'm sure we all want to see him back. He is the definitive Dante artist after all.
(3) I know it's early days yet but any updates on the Button Man movie?
(4) I saw the comics/to film thread on this board and that news story is over 12 months old. Is there any news on the Silvio Astarita/I Am The Law Productions Judge Dredd movie. i.e have they finished the script yet?
(5) Why should'nt you eat yellow snow?

I will look forward to seeing what you guys can find out.

Many thanks - Tarantino

.....Scrubs last night? Elliot actually stopped watching the Judger Dredd movie so that he could have sex. Now I know that Scrubs is not real (unlike like Eastenders, which is real) but that was just too far fetched.

Nice to see that the Judge is recognised on main stream TV across the pond.

Hey wadaya know, I made a post without mentioning.... aaaah nearly got me there!!!

Classifieds / Unique prog 1 with gift.
27 May, 2005, 12:14:30 AM
Hi Guys

I know I only pop in occasionally, but I am always reading the posts.

I have just put one of my prized possessions up for auction with Comic Book Postal Auctions. It's Prog 1 of 2000AD with free gift, but what makes this unique is the fact that it has been signed by Brian Bolland, John Wagner, Kev O?Neill, Mike McMahon, Alan Moore, Simon Bisley and Richard Burton. It would be considered Near Mint but ironically, because of the signatures it has been graded as VFN.

I?m only selling this because I am playing in the World Pool Championships in Blackpool at the beginning of June and need funding. It?s my first year and I have no sponsor.

Don?t forget, a near mint prog 1 and 2 sold for ?551 EACH with Comic Book Postal Auctions two years ago and that was without the signatures. Cut and paste the following link: http://www.compalcomics.com/results/brit122002.html and scroll down to 166 and 167.

I hope you don?t mind me advertising it here but I?d prefer it to go to a good home.

Go to the link below to see my copy and scroll down to 230, there is also a great image.

Good luck - Tarantino

Help! / Which artist/writer
15 March, 2005, 03:03:17 AM
I need some help identifting a signature. I have a copy of prog 1 which has been signed by Brian Bolland, John Wagner, Mike McMahon, Alan Moore, Kev O'Neil, Simon Bisley and one other guy but I don't know who he is and can't make out the surname. His first name is Richard and the surname begins with B. Does anyone know who he might be?

I can't believe that the free gifts are selling for more than the comics.

Check out this link for the gift with prog 3.

News / Judge Dredd movie
02 January, 2005, 09:38:19 PM
I have just been to Shorelines website and seen that they now only have a synopsis for one Dredd movie (Possession). I might be wrong but this synopsis seems to have been updated and from what I can remember of the last two synopsis's, I like the sound of it. You can read this if you go to their homepage and click on films coming soon.

Also, and I had heard this before, Shoreline have created another company, Riptide and they are taking over the production of the Dredd film.

The link below is to an article, which appeared on the 1st May 2003, so less than a year ago and they said production is under way. I have just sent an email to Shoreline asking for an update but I have written before and not had a response. I'll let you know if I get one this time.

General / 2nd fascinating piece of 2000AD history
31 December, 2004, 06:33:23 PM
OK it's been a while since I posted the last letter which appeared in the February 1977 edition of the Guardian and so here's the 2nd letter. Both these letters appeared side by side:

Sir,- For a decade between 1955 (when I was 15) and 1965 I was associated with Children's magazines, as an editor and contributor. Between 1958 and 1961 I worked for what had been The Amalgamated Press and which ultimately became IPC's magazine division. In he course of a couple of years IPC took over the three leading publishers of children?s comics and magazines, the others being Newnes-Odhams and Hultons. Prior to IPC's take over these publishers had a fairly conscientious attitude towards children's publications. After the series of take-overs the rot in my opinion, began to set in.

Oddly enough your piece on IPC?s new comic 2000AD has a very familiar ring . The ?scenario? is almost exactly identical to one prepared in the early 60?s and was the cause of one of the last of several rows I , as an editor had with the management (whose cynicism as regards their children?s periodicals can be extraordinarily  and puzzlingly fierce!). I spoke strongly against the project as did a couple of other people who happened, by this time, to belong to the NUJ committee, as I did.

Our objections ? entirely moral, of course, and using no threats ? seemed enough for the management to scrap the project. In those days I suspect they would rather give in than risk tensions arising to spoil that by now somewhat bland atmosphere of their corridors. Since then most of the people I knew who had any original creativity have left IPC and the quality of the children?s papers has declined as, gradually, the old AP, Odhams and Hultons editors and writers who gave us a whole  range of excellent (and successful) publications, including Eagle have gradually left or been squeezed out. There have been no knew ideas come from IPC?s juvenile division for years ? primarily they have relied on a barren imitation of TV subjects and of DC Thomson (Dandy, Beano etc) characters, - Yours faithfully, Michael Moorcock, C/O Anthony Shiel Associates, 52 Floral Street, London WC2

I'd love to see what this guys opinion is of a current copy of 2000AD.

It would be much appreciated if someone could look into this for me as I do not know where to start.

General / Fascinating piece of 2000AD history
19 December, 2004, 06:12:46 AM
I know I keep popping in and out of the message board but I have just bought some back issues and the guy who I bought them from sent me two newspaper cuttings, from just before 2000AD was launched. The first cutting contains two letters, printed in the Guardian, which were in response to a previous review of 2000AD.

I'll reproduce both letters in full. The first is from (of all people) a Reverend, it reads:

Sir, - John Ezard's article on the publication of the new comic "2000AD" (February 21) was the most thoroughly depressing piece of news for a long time.

The thought of an audience of up to 1.5 million children indulging the prejudices of the paranoid anti-communist hysteria of current British society and wallowing in an IPC directed thermonuclear war means that we have in no way progressed as a nation from the anti-German war-comics that pervaded my childhood in the fifties and early sixties and which still sell at an alarming rate. The comments of Mr Zemskov that the comic was designed to ?whip up war hysteria, to breed distrust in children?s minds towards other countries which they hardly know? and that ?children should be educated?. free from hatred toward other people? were most telling ? how much better a vote of confidence in the future of the human race would it have been if IPC had pondered those considerations, instead of enticing its impressionable readers with ?a free flying toy worth more than the cost of the comic.?

Or do IPC believe that commercial considerations transcend all social and moral ones? ? Yours faithfully,
(Rev) Michael J. Cleaves

Well what do you think? I would love to know which review of 2000AD he?s referring to, does anybody know?

I have another two letters but I think this is enough for one thread; I?ll post the other two on Sunday and Monday.

As usuall, no updates from Rebellion, just rumours that someone knows someone who is working on the set or has seen a new script but nothing definate.

Come on Rebellion, what's the status of the two Judge Dredd movies? There must be some news or updates. Shorline have still got it posted on their website but it's been there for years and I suspect that they are using it to cash in on Dredds name and make their site look good (see link), which it does, I'll admit, but it's just teasing us.

I'll ask you straight, are the two movies going ahead? and what's the time scale?

General / A Dredd idea for Rebellion....
31 October, 2004, 06:15:15 PM
I know I haven't posted for a while but I do like to keep up with the board when I've got time.

I used to read a lot of Marvel and DC comics but apart from 2000AD and the Meg I now only read the X-Men, but only out of habit

One of the things I used to enjoy about reading titles like the X-Men, The Avengers and the Fantastic Four was the team element. They always seemed like a family and and there was a lot more interesting interaction between characters whom you got to know individually over a long period. You could also rely on the same characters to appear every month. This is now not true of the American titles and mostly not true of the X-Titles. There are so many X-teams now-a-days it's bloody hard to keep up, I never know who's on who's side and it's just plain frustrating. That's the main reason I have given up on the American comics; they are just cashing in and forgetting about the readers.

Getting to my point, I would love to see Judge Dredd build a team of regular characters around himself. A team made up of individuals with unique talents, like Cassandra Anderson, whom we could rely on appearing every week. Dredd would be the backbone of the team but not necessarily the leader. They could also have a regular base, with its unique attributes, like the Avengers mansion or the Fantastic Fours tower. I know it would go against the grain for some fans but people and team whom Dredd would care about. In my opinion Dredd's been hard for to long, it's time for a subtle character change, he's aleardy shown a caring side on rare occasions and this type of change has worked for Wolverine over the years. He's still tough on the bad guys but cares about his team mates.

With this in mind, I would love to hear everyone's ideas for Dredd's Dream Team. Who do you think should be on Dredd?s team and why?

Help! / Looking for something on ebay
21 August, 2004, 06:36:37 PM
I was reecntly watching ebayers bidding for a complete run of 2000AD. About 7 hours before the end they had reached ?1,950 and I thought I had saved it to My Ebay but I must have made a mistake as I now cannot find it.

Did anyone see this and do they know what the final price was.

Also, if possible does anyone have a link to it.

Many thanks in advance.

General / Sinister/Dexter love them or hate them, WHY?
14 August, 2004, 08:16:52 PM
Personally, Sinister/Dexter, when it is written and drawn well, is one of my favourite stories and I cannot understand why some people hate them so much.

It seems to be be 50/50, you either love them or hate them. There's no middle ground.

So let's hear from both camps, why do you love them and why do you hate them.

I always like to post the dodgy descriptions of progs on ebay, it's one of my hobbies, the other being listing dodgy descriptions of progs on ebay. Now that's fuel for my own hobbie!

Also, this guy has 99% positive feedback. Go figure.
