Games / Have Fist will travel!
04 April, 2007, 08:39:40 AM
I saw this game whilst looking for a cheap copy of RogueTrooper or one of those other Rockstar made games for Playstation Two and whilst also noticing that alot of Playstation Two games are still being sold at full price I noticed this one.

Well, some poor guy loses his hand ( Or whole arm, I'm not so sure.) whilst fighting some supernatural thugs and wakes up the next day with the 'Hand of God in it's place.

Well, I'm so sure what I would being doing if I woke up with the 'Hand of God' first thing in the morning;)

Though if would like to know more about this holy appendage.

Noticeing that the second Strontium Dog is now on the horizon, I though it was strnage that there is no sign of another Nemsis book yet.

Though it was the first of the two to arrive.

I was also wondering is there will be any more of Extinct. As it does appear to have more to it.

Books & Comics / What is it about Newsagencies?
19 March, 2007, 10:29:39 PM
Yesterday, when I went into town to get my weekly dose of Thrillpower. I found that it wasn't there. Only three days after the day that it comes in.

The store owner or caretaker tells me they only got in ONE 2000AD magazine that day and it had already been sold.

I might also inform you right here that I had been buying this magazine from this particular store that is more local to me than the other place where they were giving me damaged progs for quite awhile now. Since the start of Origins atleast, I have been finding aprog just about each week on their newstand.

My question her,e is that I have been told by few Newsagencies close to me that what they stock on their shevles is sent to them by their supplier.
Another words, what they don't get in, what they aren't sent by their supplier.

Who really controls distribution?

Which seems so strange to me and know I have to go hunting for this weeks prog soemwhere else. Hopefully with out having to travel too far. Travel also costs money.

Second thing I have been wondering about it is that last week whilst paying for that current prog I gave the store clerk behind the counter twenty dollars ( It cost about seven dollars Australian for 2000AD where I live.) and as I stuffed eight dollars worth of change and notes back into my pocket I didn't realise I had been short changed until I had turned the corner.

It was no problem for them to give me the remaining five dollars when I returned. But it left me alittle suspicous as to why this happened in the first place. Just a mistake, abit of carelessness.

Of course they may be alittle recentful that I didn't let them keep the money.

Anyway, I 'm not rich, I'm not made of money.

Well, I'm off to go prog hunting in few of the other new agenecies around. Though I'm not counting on them to be having any in stock as this publication has been sparcely ditributed for quite a while now.

Film & TV / Hackers...
15 March, 2007, 02:46:11 AM
I just recently watched 1995 film 'Hackers' early this morning. Thanks to our cable connection.

John Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie ( Formly husband and wife for three years in real life.)

I remember seeing film when it came to cinema back then also. One of the first times I have noticed Angelina Jolie and I still think that when she looked here best. Not that she doesn't look bad now.

Anyway, apart from the fact that it was filmed at a real NYC high school where they really do pull 'The Pool on the roof Prank'. This was also the place right next store to where the Twin World Trade Centre buildings were before that fateful day at September eleven 2001. Apparently this place suffered no ill effects apart from the fact that rescue workers made it their base of operations whilst the actual school had to be moved elsewhere.

Back on to the subject of the film. One their hackers from the film has image of Judge Dredd on his computer. I'm not sure wether this is his laptop or normal PC. I just remember seeing the image on a computer screen briefly before it changed to a loading screen.

Can't find any piture of it from the movie images still on the net.

I just though that was worth mentioning here.

Books & Comics / A High Price For a Small Book
13 March, 2007, 03:36:02 PM
'Slaine: The Exile'

It's just arrived for me to pick up at price of $29.95 dollars Australian. Of course when I complained, they ( The bookstore where I had ordered this book as well as all those 2000AD graphic novles.)been  conceeded and lowered it to $24.95
which is still pricey by my own standards.

I can only remember one other occasion where I even paid as much as $20 dollars for a paperback novel. You remember a Jack Nicoholson movie called 'About Schmidt' I saw that movie and brought the accompanying novel, which too my suprise was written much differently from the film. Anyway it was this novel that cost me $20 dollars Australian, buts that another story and not the one that I am really addressing here.

The original price quoted to me for this 'Slaine : the Exile' was $17.95 dollars Australian. Now thats it's arrived they wont' sell to me for less than their conceeded price of $24.95 Australian.

I remember the good old days ( About Fifteen years ago.) when I used to buy 'Forgotten Realms' novels for about twelve dollars nearly every fornight. ( I was working at the time and earning higher wages.) Those days are long gone now.

This bookstore I am ordering the book through, tell me it's the shipping rate that I am paying the extra money for. Anyway I have phoned and asked through other more well known Australian bookstores, how much it would cost me to obtain this very same novel through them. 'Angus and Robertson' have told me that the book by itself would cost me only $10.50 dollars Australian. As they don't have it in their store right now. They say it would cost another $6 dollars Australian. So this totals at $16 dollars Australian. Which has become the normal price for most other paper back novels these days.

Even the other BlackFlame novels that have been written about the expanded exploits of one 'Judge Dredd' and other BlackFlame books written about ' Johhny Alpha, Wulf SternHammer and MiddenFace Mcnulty' are priced at about $17.00 dollars Australian.

I really think I am being taken advantage of here. Would you agree that I am being ripped off. Like, I did have half mind to tell this bookstore where I have ordered 'Slaine: The Exile' That I should cancel my order and perhaps find the book in another store or even order it through 'Angus & Robertson' at the more desireable price. Except I also need to rely on this bookstore as they have been the only ones that can get all those other graphic novels that have been advertised at the 2000AD online store. You know all those Judge Dred Case Files books, as well as the new Nemesis the Warlock and Strontium Dog search and Destroy Agency files. No other bookstore in the south east of Queensland will touch 2000AD online. Except the few newsagencies around that still sell the comic/magazine.

Anyway, who agrees that I should tell them where to stick it or should keep my moth shut and my wallet open. http://i.walmart.com/i/p/09/78/18/44/16/0978184416387_500X500.jpg">

Books & Comics / Slaine Quality Comics
01 March, 2007, 07:38:59 AM
I'm just wanting to know if Slaine stories that occured after the end of 'The Horned God' were ever reprinted under this American owned title. ( I think Quality Comics are American Based.)

I thought it may be a distinct possibility as I had just found out that 'The Horned God' was reprinted under 'Quality Comics' as well.

Of course, judging by what I have heard about these particular Slaine stories it's almost understandable why they may not haver been reprinted.

Otherwise, I would like to be pointed in the right direction.

Other Reviews / The Dead
28 February, 2007, 08:25:27 PM
The latest copy of 2000AD Extreeme. Featuring a cover picture from another comic I had previoulsy skimmed over and still own a few copies of it when it was serialised in Quality Comic format.

'The Dead.'............

Very strange stuff, metaphyical, weirdness.( Not weird in a negative way of course.) Which is what I thought of this in the last of my teen years as I had been more interested in the 'Slaine' as it was the main feature and 'The Dead ' was used for filler. I had only noticed these in the newagencies  at the beginning of the 'The Slaine: Spoils of Annyn' ( That could be issue number 16,17,18, 19, 20 or higher, not really sure without digging them out.) storyline. ( Though I found out much later that QC ran Slaine right from the start ( SpellBinders, also featuring "Amadeus Wolf' and some early 'Nemesis')to even the 'The Horned God.' and perhaps beyond.....

( Big Question: Have QC done anymore Slaine comics since 'The Horned God', As I have only just found out that they had covered 'Slaine the Horned God' as well?

Now I had been able to buy afew more of those QC comics (which were colourised.) a few years ago.  What I have now is a few more issues telling the story from the 'Slaine: Tomb of Terror' right towards the end and nearly all the way thru to 'Slaine: The Mini-Series'.

Some of these comics were also featuring 'Black-Beth',  and 'Black-Hawk' as filler as well. I guess that 'The Dead' would be only ten episodes long in full. ( Am I correct.)

Not sure if they ever featured these in really early 2000AD. Though, I think this was where Black-Hawk was also featured. I'm not sure I ever remember seeing 'The Dead' anywhere else.

Anyway, I don't know if I have ever episode of 'The Dead' and I wasn't really following the story that well when I was first reading this in dribs and drabs over the last fifteen to twenty year period.

( I shall dig these out sometime. Deduce wether I have all of them or not.)

This ten episode reprint in the 'Extrreeme' magazine may be something else to look forward to.

Games / Call of Juarez
25 February, 2007, 09:32:24 PM
For those American Wild west devotees that only dream about this lifestyle and haven't yet expereinced it for themsleves should look for copy of "Call Of Juarez" in their local Walmart or EB.........

( Not that I woud knw, but I am guessing here.)

Or atleast download the Demo. Which is what I did!

I started the demo ( There's choice of being a ex-Outlaw/Preacher armed with two six shooters or halfbreed indian carrying a Whip.)

All I can say is that it's very authentic as ....

( Do I hear a lazy Mexican guitar playing in the background. This reminds me of that old Korona Beer commercial from nearly twenty years ago. )

A tumbleweed rolls across, my field of vision. As I am stepping straight down the middle of the one main street of this visably deserted town. The buildings on either side of me are all boarded up, like they were expecting trouble. I can barely percieve the sound of  bolts sliding in to locked position......

Rubbish... mainly wooden crates are strewn in my path. What was once a wagon carriage is left leaning on it's two remaining wheels.....

A woman screams. A shrill sound enamating from the second storey window of the third building down on my left hand side.....

I now hear the telltale sound of spurs dragging, hitting the dirt slowly, methodically, a few yards in front and slighty in front of me.....

( The Mexican guitar is playing slower and less distinctly now.)

I stop suddenly, standing, legs evenly spread apart, arms akimbo, hovering close to the handles of my twin six shooters. It's been twenty years since those guns had seen use. It's been twenty years since I had the need to use them. Despite that long time, and out of habit I had absent mindedly reloaded them upon strapping on the holsters.......

( Mexican guitars can still be heard. Must be a ghost.)

Two pairs of spurs attached to two pairs of boots moving into positon in front of me. They haven't shot at me yet, because they think they have the numbers on me........

Part of this motely bunch now standing infront of me, who  moments before had also been standing right outside the door of the church ( I chose the born again Preacher.) where I practice sermons. One of them had just shot the sheriff and they promptly all turned tail and ran. The culprit didn't make it. He bit the dust beofe he even gotten all the way down to the bottom of the hill just on the outskirts of the main street.......

Being a greyhaired ex-outlaw turned Preacher. Who has survived this harsh enviroment for this long develops keen survival instincts. There are only two types of people who eke out aliving in this type of country.

 The quick......

 and the dead...........

( That Mexican guitar are still playing a lazy tune.)

Their guns had left their holsters, yes and there was the familer clicking noise of four hammers snapping back into position.

Make that, six hammers as my guns flew into my hands nearly of their own accord....

Spectral cross-hairs that didn't really exist, but were there none the less. Making a journey from the extreme left and right of my vision. Where they converged on the outlines of two of cowboys opposing me. Standing outside of the other two. Who were yet to face the wrath of my twin barreels......

To the untrained ears. A collective bang whould have been heard. Though, my ears would have heard Bang. times four but one by one. Except it was Bang times time eight, then twelve, but I didn't have to use all six bullets.......

I could feel rather than see atleast the passage of two bullets as they made there journey past my head and between my knees as they went right past and continued behind me......

Four hats fly off four heads. One of them spinning like a flying saucer before coming to rest. Not before their owners had wobbled and started to fall.....

My guns were reloaded and reholstered before four lifeless heaps had made it to the dirt.......

The mexican guitar stops and when the dust clears......

Suddenly, I became aware of the smell of gun powder mixxed with the scent of scorched leather hat coming from the top of my head. My hat. On later inspection had a slight discoloured burned skidmark on it and I had also checked my trousers as there were two bullet holes there as well. Thankfully, they were really baggy trousers and my manhood had survived unscathed. Had those bullet holes been any higher and... lets just say that I wouldn't be much of Preacher with with falsetto instead of my usual baritone.

Four dead bodies, plus the other one behind me.....

The mexican guitar returns, playing alot faster now....

At the sight of their four companions taken down so quickly. The rest of them deicded to take me more seriously as gun fire played all around me as I went for cover.

This was far from over.......

Games / BloodRayne
22 February, 2007, 03:38:06 AM
Saw this in EB for ten dollars. So I got one ( I'm still looking for a cheap copy of Rogue Trooper.)

Not that I would normally buy a game with a female protagonist. This is about as close as I get to crossdressing.

Though, there were other resons for my interest in this material.......

Now I know that she isn't acutaalley the of the 2000AD stock. Though she does bare more than a passing resemblance Durnam Red, whom I had thought at one stage to be also called BloodRayne as well.( But thats another argument.)

They only had the PC version. as it's been of my opinion that console games run and perform better than the PC games. They also have a easier control system. Though PC games in general have more potential. PC versions of console games are usaully bigger and can more easily modified by talented enthusiasts

Off Topic / Greetings Starfighter -
11 February, 2007, 05:58:07 PM
-You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada.

Earlier today, 'The Last Starfighter' was on  television. A old favorite of mine. While not being as good as 'Starwars' and having spiecal effects which look pretty shoddy by todays standards, this movie still attracts veiwers such as myself for the simple reason that.......... wouldn't it be cool to be recruited by a leage of techologically advanced but benevelant aliens to defend the galaxy merely by passing the Excaliber/video game test devised by Centari on the local arcade gaming cabinet.

The movie was screening in cinemas at a time when I was into playing space shooter sims on the old C64 hoping that one day I would receive similer recognition such as the main movie character Alex Rogan did in ' The last Starfighter. '

I had often wondered at the likley hood of that arcade game  featured in the movie to be in distribution around the local arcades. Surely it was possible.

Anyway a group of programmers calling themselves Rogue
Synapse have put their heads and programmering skills together to duplicate the actual arcade game seen in the movie. As it did appear to be a game or it may have been just animation made to look like a game. I was never too sure.

They have a download for this game that I am
sure fans of the movie would get a kick out of playing. It's practically just how it was in the film with the theme music, Robert Preston's ( Centari.) voice over narrative and sound effects. Of course the graphics are dated now. Back in the early eighties I would have flipped at the chance to play this game back then as the best game in terms of graphics and immerciveness that I had seen at that time was Firebird's 'Elite' and Battlezone. Both relying 3D vector graphics to create the illusion of depth. Full colour 3D on 3D visuals were alittle too advanced  back then on a home computer. It wasn't until the early ninties that a futuristic racing game ( It's name I can't quite remember at the moment.) and that of the virtual series 'Virtual Cop' and 'Virtual Fighter'  were the first to have
the full 3D sprites on 3D backgrounds with full 3D movement that heralded a new dimension in those fighter, racing, shooter games.

Rogue Synapse have also duplicated famous arcade games from other movies and televison shows such as 'Space Paranoids' from the film Tron, 'Graboids' from a the 'Tremors' trilogy and 'Bishop of Battle' from a early eighties horror anthology. Some of these are just trailers or unfinished demos. 'The Last Starfighter' game is a complete version as simple as it turns out to be, but a joy to play in remembrance of the movie.

Now you too can help the Star Leage defeat Xur and the Ko-dan Amarda........................

Noticing the small picture of the the young man in furrs holding up a horned helmet from a new movie called 'Path-Finder' in the new films section of the Christmas edition of the Judge Dredd Megazine. I just had look it up, find out what story was on the world wide web.

I just watched the trailer for this just now and it looks pretty exciting if out this sort of movie that would keep me you on the edge of your seat.

Karl Urban as the young Norse-blooded boy raised by the Indian tribe his people invaded/raided/pillaged that sort of thing.

There is also mention of Clancy Brown. Perhaps as a Viking Leader, ( Perhaps the Villian.) returning this actor to a similar  territory of furred leggings, swords, and beheadings when he once was the Kurgon from 'Highlander'.

In the trivia section of IMDB.com and as evident from the movie trailer. These vikings are in full uniform
including the impressive looking horned helmets that they were only known to wear in popular if inaccurate viking fantacy.

I think this look was actualley stolen from traditional Celtic warrior garb. If it's not what they traditionally wore. During the Battle of Clontarf, ( I'm not terribly bothered wether or not this happened before or after the Vikings had invaded Vineland.)  Perhaps some of the Vikings who had made it back to their ships on time had taken the famous the head gear back with them.

Putting aside what ever was meant to be historically accurate, the movie looks cool anyway.
