For fans of this 80's classic I stumbled across this original Anime test pilot version of the first episode. The story's the same but the animation's different as are some of the designs, including the ship which is prehistoric CGI.

The opening to this version is like it was directed by Kubrick ala 2001: A Space Odyssey.

You can download it here:

My problem is that they introduce things in the film just so they can get from A-B in the plot using Dreddworld props and not really explaining anything. They just seem to want him stripped of his uniform and into the Cursed Earth so Dredd can become Stallone and see some action ASAP.

***They still have court sentencing for judges don't they? Albeit other judges are involved? Or are you referring to a member of the public being sentenced? (The film isn't that fresh in my memory, although I remember Dredd himself being sentenced in front of a court).***

It's never made clear, that's my point. They just cut to the court scene after the audience has watched up till then with the impression there were no more trials. In the original script there was no trial scene. It was added by the producers because they thought that it shouldn't really be a fascist state!?

***Actually I think the early part of the film made the instant sentencing thing quite clear. ***

Not really, because it was contradicted quite early on when we see a court scene. There's supposed to be no more courts, it was never made clear if people were still tried or just Judges.

***The film actuall made more logical sense than the comic in a couple of areas: It always looked wrong to me in the comic when Dredd is, for example, put on a chain gang or something, stripped to the waist but with his helmet on, I would ratrher in the comic his face be obscured or just off-panel. Also, MC1 is full of flying cars yet the Judges only have ground-dwelling bikes. ***

They're minor gripes though and can be solved easily, the biggest problems concern story.

***I think I read Dredd for years without knowing more about the backstory of how people become judges, though that never stopped it making sense. By comparason, the film has a lot of backstory packed in: In the intro, showing the academy, between the chief judges, Dredd's parentage (or lack of) and what happened between him and Rico. It may not be exactly the same as the comic version but it is there.***

but if you are making a film, and there may only ever be one as opposed to thousands of comics, things like the Judges/instant justice need to be explained or the context is completely lost on the public. In the Dredd movie things were mentioned but never explained, this confuses rather sheds light, better off not including something if it doesn't carry story. There wasn't much context and the whole parentage thing was balls anyway, just a cheap way to make Dredd into an action hero with a purpose.

***Personally I think the best story for a Dredd movie would be him taking a cadet on their final evaluation; maybe loosely base it on Young Giant or Blood Cadets.***

You couldn't stretch that out to a 2 hour film though, maybe a 30 minute tv show.

The original Punisher film lost money.

The newer one was low budget ($15 million) so there was little risk and it made multiple times it's budget at the box office. With a Dredd film, we're talking over $100 million to make a decent film before marketing, it's 10 times the cost of the Punisher all ready.

A Hollywood film is only considered a success if it makes 3-4 times it's original budget. Breaking even or just over is a no go. So Dredd would have to take in around $400 million to be a considered a resounding success like the Punisher. That's a big difference from Punisher's $115 milllion take in and Dredd and Punisher are both comic characters of a similar "cultish" status.

It's all about the risk to profit ratio for these films in Hollywood.

Dredd is a huge risk no matter what, it has a bad history and it's expensive.

We all know the focus of the story in the movie was flawed and wrong, so fuck it. let's burn the negatives.

***The helmet coming off never bothered me, it's something you can get away with in the comic but in a movie it's just not practical (do we really think Dredd keeps his helmet on on the bog?? I don't think so).***

Depending on how you tell any story in film things like keeping a helmet on can be pulled off (not the helmet).

***The dolph Lundgren Punisher film didnt get in the way of the Tom Jane Punisher film or stop anyone watching it.***

Both cinematic failures and nowhere near as expensive as Dredd, minor loss.
