>But it was a Cork man(rather good at..the game in question) that pointed out Mr Mills heinous "hurley with their heads" error to me. I was rightly ashamed.

Corkonians all have ideas above their station -getting a real education in Dublin and all that- he was just actin' posh.

>So, what about Chris DeBurghs "...Light years of time..." in 'A Spaceman came travelling'?

Cork people are rather fond of him too. They think he's done well for himself.
I hear he's now claimed to have the gift of "Healing Hands" on Alan Robinson's radio show. What a twat.

>Hmm, so Slaine said "We'll play hurley with their heads"

>we all know it should have been "play hurling with their heads" >, the hurley being the stick used to play that game.

Playing hurling is the act of hurling a ball -the sliotar- with a hurley, which is the stick but..

In the translation from the colloquial syntax of spoken Gaelic Irish to English, an Irish person is more likely to say "We'll play hurley with their heads" rather than "play hurling with their heads" which is actually going by the strict rules of modern English grammar.

What seems peculiar to "English" natives is an example of the peculiarities of the grammar of "Irish" mixed with English words.

So "We'll play hurley with their heads" does not sound strange to the average Irish person whereas  "play hurling with their heads" would sound a bit strange depending on where you are from.

For instance many average Irish people will say in everyday speech: "I'm after having me dinner" which in strict English would be "I've just had my dinner". It's just a mix of Irish grammar and English words.

All non native English speaking countries have similar peculiarites in grammar, it's just that English people think they're mistakes when not since there are now many variants of the language after empire. Language is generative in real time not an absolute.

So Pat Mills is more right than wrong and he's done his research.

Found this little bit of trivia about Wagner/Grant and Cam Kennedy working on a kids tv show called the Terranoids a few years ago.

Look near the top of page and see the picture to the left:
