If there was money in a proper space industry that we could all apply for jobs in, there'd be an effort to invest a lot more instead of giving the Pentagon $50 billion every year, but it's just not there, and the energy expended overshoots any benefit while using up current dwindling resources.

We can't fuck the planet up, it's impossible. Even all-out nuclear war would only render the planet uninhabitable for a few thousand years and then there'd be a few more billion years of nature being nature.

Sounds like a fucked up planet.

Space exploration is essential to the long-term survival of humanity

I think not fucking up this planet is more essential to the long-term survival of humanity.

I remember reading a frustrated comment in response to an article that argued deep space travel was a pipe-dream, it went something like, "What do you mean deep space exploration is not possible, you mean we're stuck on this rock?"

As if that should really be a matter of concern for someone who would never set foot outside the Van Allen Belt.

Quote from: Steve Green on 26 September, 2014, 01:00:59 PMI wonder if, with hindsight John wouldn't have gone the real-time route, or he thinks it marks Dredd out as different, and is worth the question of longevity.

Other than being the author of Dredd's death, at this stage it's not his problem to worry about, though I think the ageing aspect has been the catalyst for some of Dredd's most profound stories - a shame if it had gone down a more traditional route.

That would make him indestructible, which would remove any peril from the stories.

The editors won't retire Dredd, and Wagner has already ruled out replacing him with Rico II. But he's already in his 70s, and saying "70 is the new 40" won't work when he's 80. Sooner or later they are going to have to address this.

Citizen lifespan has an optimum of about 150 so I'd say the age issue could be put on the long finger for another 20 years or so.

QuoteMy preference would be for a solution that has been around for decades, i.e. From an early story, rather than something thrown together at the last minute. Such as the biochips from "The Judge Child" and recently re-used in "The Simping Detective."

Which is also an idea that diminishes the character and makes him relatively 'indestructible'.

With Karl Urban being so supportive of Dredd he's got to feature right?  *crosses fingers & toes*

Hmm; unless there's a special arrangement to appear -or provide a voice-over- maybe not. The clue is in the series title: 'Bootleg Universe'. It's not an official presentation and I presume Karl Urban is still under contract to DNA/IMGlobal for any new Dredd features- unlike Tom Jane who was long out-of-contract for The Punisher when he made Dirty Laundry.

even a girl-on-girl fight for the amusement of a drooling warlord and his chauvinistic hangers-on is presented as ugly and unglamorous.

Isn't that the way Goreans like it?

"Reach out" is another one. "I'll reach out to the client" etc. I've even heard it used outside of a work context - maybe it's an American thing?

But what is wrong with the word 'contact'?!?!

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparklemotion.

If you really want to rig the results of their test, you should be trawling newsagents along the South coast of England and buying up their entire stock. Maybe wear a different disguise each time.

Burdis will need some help.
