General / Re: Is Slaine really Cu Chulainn?

Sort of off-topic here, but anyway.

Tolkein.  A man who'd have benefitted from a good editor.  Chapter after chapter of what Frodo and Sam had for dinner, geographical chat, songs about stuff that happened way way back, endless descriptions of foot-slogging.  Those things certainly bring the reader into the work and make the world seem very real (and large and dangerous) but COD - maybe a little less?  Just a thought.

The Lord of the Rings and associated works are cracking stuff in my opinion, but whenever I've gone back to re-read it, I find myself flicking pages because I remember that nothing much happens for a while.

Pat Mills stated fairly early on in Slaine (or "Saline" as I first typed, the curse of being a quick typist with a dodgy wireless keyboard that occasionally, for no real reason, decides to miss a character here and there) is based heavily on Cu Chulainn, but by no means exclusively.  The article was in the prog, back in the 300s or 400s I believe and made it's way into one or two of the reprints.  He also made it clear where he's gotten many of his references in afterwords, introductions etc.

Even the weakest thing he did, The Equaliser for telly, was brilliantly played.  He never gave less than 100%.  Genius.

That SA set is incredibly vile.  Either of the other two would be fine (those who dislike them can switch them off in settings after all) but I find them useful as a way of denoting when someone's joking to avoid pointless arguments.....

Obviously a parody.  Not that funny.  Should have tried harder.

"Didn't let Yoko sing" made me chuckle though.  But should have been quicker-paced to have gotten laughs.

The original video is a piece of crap.  And Korn have fuck all on the Beatles.  They're not even as good as The Monkees.  Or anyone else I can think of.  One good album (the first one) and then dull dull dull.

Although the furry comments were amusing.  I'll give him that.

My opinion on the The Beatles is that they definitely don't suck - BUT - they are MASSIVELY, RIDICULOUSLY over-rated (and benefit from doing a lot of the crap songs in their respective solo-careers).  Revolver, Abbey Road & The Beatles (aka "The White Album") are brilliant albums in my opinion but the rest?  Not great, but some good songs on most of them.

The German language version of "She Loves You" is an absolute joy.  Why don't bands do MORE of that sort of thing?

Flint was on FIRE in this.  I agree the story wasn't quite as much as I'd hoped for, it felt like we were rushing through things.

And Kev O'Neil deserved to draw the last episode.  It's just a shame that it looked so bad compared to Flint's work on the rest.

Sounds like an excellent reason to keep posting and talk more about it.

Trust me.

I'm saving you from an awful film.

It tends to blow the roof off and bits of wall, causing the fire.  I'll be having a lovely dream with all my mates and family, living and dead, having a great time.  And then BANG the bloody roof comes off and it's death after horrible death.

Oh well.  Thanks so much for checking.

I guess then I should look at these new topcs carefully to see if there's a reply before I click to look/report.  If there's a reply it's to warn the rest of us it's reported.
