General / Re: Forthcoming Thrills & Trades!

I want DeMarco back.  And not just because she's a hottie.  She was a great character and I'd like to see her back in the meg (in the TG slot preferably).  Her appearance in Simping Detective just wasn't enough.....

And not just "not enough clothing" although that WAS quite fun.

Never quite got the idea of being on a scene.  I like visitiing gigs, going to clubs and all kinds of music - a spot of goth/punk/post punk/ebm/industrial/metal/dance/future pop and other on-topic-drift genres, but loads of other stuff.  I have a particular fetish for northern soul and funk at the moment.  Could never feel like I wanted to limit my music to just one genre or era.

Wow, that's a post on BOTH topics.

What John said.

Just hit his Hellblazer issues in my re-read, cracking artist with an individual style and great storytelling chops.  He makes it look easy, but anyone who's attempted it knows it's far from it.

Thanks Colin, my best mate was a huge Queen fan in my teens and I absorbed fandom by osmosis.  Those albums ARE great, but I've not listened to them in ages, worth a revisit I reckon.

Ush, TB: Agreed in SPADES.

I feel like a phillistine (small "p", don't want to offend anyone) for not getting it, but I really don't.  And Twitter seems so pointless as to be almost a joke.  I already have a FB account, can't justify joining ANOTHER social network that I can't see the attraction to.

Having read your post, SG, I'm tempted to try and live up to it.

Sadly the best *I* can come up with is "bumpiece" or "poo-eater" - hardly Shakespeare.

Other Reviews / Re: Gordon Rennie's Dredd vs Sovs arc
28 February, 2010, 12:18:27 PM
I can't agree with your assessment of that block of stories, but I can see where you're coming from.

Regarding the whole cripple=evil thing:  I presume that Gordon was riffing on the trope rather than being casually discriminatory.  A quick survey of his posts here would tend to suggest that such thought is NOT something he tolerates lightly.  Or indeed at all, jumping in often where I'm uncertain if any offense has actually been given.  So I think you're off the mark THERE.

I really like Rennie's take on Dredd, those stories aren't his BEST Dredd by any stretch but I don't go as far as you.

And I quite liked the Sov aspects of Doomsday (the implementation of the mechanic might be a little sucky with needless repetition), Sin City, even Orlok's appearances in Anderson.  So I disagree there too.  But good thoughts well put.  Variety is the spice of life, after all.

I'd agree with Wooly too in that I don't think he "apes" Wagner, he has his own distinct style on the character which is brave considering some of the stick Ennis, Morrison and Millar got for doing the same thing in the past (and indeed continue to get right here).  I view his loss to the videogames industry to be a real tragedy for Twoth.  I really hope he comes back in a more long-term way soon.  Given enough time I'm sure his voice will be every bit as definitive as Wagners.

Wow, if it's getting THAT heavy traffic (and lets be honest, that's not a surprise) I reckon the competition will be stiff.

That's a good thing for whoever gets far in the process though, it's a sign that you're really good.  Good luck IOEM, your stuff is cracking so keep at it.

Welcome to the board / Re: Credit where credit is due.
28 February, 2010, 12:03:27 PM
Wow, really?

Oddly this place does seem to allow for a regular chat with many of the creators - PJ, Colin MacNeil, Jock, yourself, David Bishop, Grennie..... there's lots of them who seem pretty nice, well-balanced individuals (i.e. they stick out like sore thumbs).  Hard to remember that this sort of thing isn't actually that common in geekery/fandom.  This board, for all it's faults, is a pretty welcoming place and I've yet to be saddened at how anyone comes across.

Except PJ obviously.  But as I'm always telling people, I bully him on the internet.  Gimmie your lunch money Peej!

That's a real shame, John.  As a Dreddhead with a role-playing bent, indeed with your own take on this sort of material underway, it must be quite difficult to come to such a decision.  Your review chimed with my opinion of what I saw at my thrill-merchant, but I hoped that a more in-depth reading would prove me wrong.

A shame.

General / Re: Where's Anderson?
28 February, 2010, 11:57:00 AM
It's a shame but I have to agree.  Both Alan Grant AND Pat Mills, creators I hugely admire, seem to have put their best Dredd/Dreddworld strips behind them.  A real shame.  Hopefully it's just a blip.

I can't help but feel that either Anderson is being SAVED for a later strand in Tour of Duty OR Wagner doesn't touch her at the moment, viewing her as Grant's property.  The first possibility is just full of happiness, the second is sadder than the fact that Grant & Mills can't seem to nail Dredd anymore.

As you say - the story seems to almost demand Anderson's presence.  In earlier days she was practically Dredd's conscience and humanity made flesh, now Dredd is much more in touch with his self it's possible her presense, while logical from an in-world perspective, would just seem like needless repetition of "this is wrong, this must be fixed" from Dredd, Rico, Beeny AND Anderson.

I'd like to see more of Giant in this storyline, he's one of the most interesting among Dredd's "family".

That bloody t-mobile band advert.

It crawls up my arsehole, snakes around my heart and lays little shitty eggs of death in my soul.  I want all involved to die.  HORRIBLY.

No.  That's unfair.  I want them to live, but to be scarred.  HORRIBLY.

There's a Dredd/Twoth wiki indeed.  Here in fact.  Someone will show up and point you in the direction any minute....  I've yet to visit.

Yeah, it's overblown but I don't care.  The Terra-Meks works brilliantly.

BIG JOBS!
