Film & TV / Re: FLASH GORDON remake
27 February, 2010, 01:50:58 PM
So we have: 1. The director mis-understanding the appeal of both the original comic strip AND the 80s movie - it's camp retrofuturism. 2. No Queen. 3. The director attempting to update something that doesn't need it and which, like Dan Dare, would become almost unrecognisable if it WERE to be updated (again missing the point). 4. Oh god, there has to be a four, doesn't there?  I just can't see it because I'm bellowing "YOU STUPID MORON" at the computer.  Not you guys, this twonk planning on remaking this classic.

I'll tell you how cracking this movie is.  I was at my folks house watching it as my poorly dad excused himself to go upstairs and died of a heart attack on the stairs.  I've never failed to watch it on every opportunity it's been aired ever since.  Now there are tears amoung the grins, but they're mostly good ones.  Just that iconic bass line makes me think of my da's raised eyebrows at the appearance of Ming's lovely daughter on screen.  It's pure cinematic joy, not even one of my saddest memories can dilute it.  It's THAT good.

There are songs that no sane artist should ever attempt to cover, they've just been done perfectly already and nobody will ever give you time to do your thing, no matter how cool you might think it is so why bother?  There are films like that too - not many, but some and Flash Gordon is one of them.

And the best way to update Flash Gordon?  Isn't it obvious?  It's called Nikolai Dante.

Done and posted on my facebook page with an exhortation to all my folks to sign up too if they're behind it.  Which obviously I'd hope they are.

Radiator, I agree wholeheartedly with your post.  It seems very "in" to post a quote without comment in these circumstances, but I think it's lazy and annoying so I'm typing this to say the same thing.

I CONCUR.

Well done, Mr Meanie.

Remind us again how much it is, the full names of the creators, where it's available, what we'll be getting for our hard-earned.... [HINT: PLUG OPPORTUNITY]

Like the way Heinz said they were going to stop making the godawful Salad Cream stuff (honestly, in a world where you can get mayonaise or tartare sauce there cannot be a place for this overly sweet impostor).  Good point, here's bloody hoping.

That's the winner right there.
Anything that gives us more grumpy sewer mek is, in my book, entirely justified and should happen.  Immediately.

I could just be going mad with pain and drugs following a recent injury, but I reckon I'll still like the idea when all has returned to normal.

Rock Lobster is a favourite of mine.  Fun to play and sing along with on a guitar too.  Undemanding but huge fun and very engaging.  Go B52s!

And Eno?  Oh yeah.  Recently unearthed a bunch of those albums as a result of watching that cracking Arena on BBC4 a few weeks ago.

Well pimped sir, well pimped.

John and Eric will be getting a phone call to hang onto a copy for me later - although they should really be doing that anyway.

At least you didn't do that David Blaine "levitation" by going on tip toe thing.  Well dodgy.

I reckon that'd be pretty freakin trippy for irony as it goes.

Thread Drift ahoy!

PJ, any idea when Happy Valley part 3 is due in the shops or has my thrill-merchant failed me for THE LAST TIME?

James, I think you may have nailed it.

And well done with the Punisher comparison - done badly that's EXACTLY the sort of one-dimensional character Dredd can come off as, and it's exactly the character he IS NOT.  Well, not since The Apocalypse War at any rate.
