Books & Comics / Heartland - Ennis Archaeology
05 September, 2006, 10:49:35 PM
I've just been going through my old comics with a view to getting rid of some of them and I came across something absolutely fantastic that I'd totally forgotten about.

Heartland was a Vertigo one-off by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, published around about the time their run on Hellblazer finished. I can't remember if the main character in it is actually supposed to be Constantine's Irish bird, but they're basically indistinguishable.

Anyway, there are no demons, no magic, no superpowers and very little horrible violence. Just some people getting pissed, talking shit, getting it on with their sister's boyfriend and discussing life in Northern Ireland. Basically things Ennis has done over and over again - right down to the ending where someone sings a song with a tenuous relationship to the plot - but done exceptionally well.

Miles better than Preacher.

*how DO you pronounce rorschach anyway? could someone post a phanetics (sp?) please

Rawr-shach, with the ch pronounced as in the Scottish "loch." There's no other way to write that last sound, but English people find it very difficult to pronounce.

Having been a minor player on the board for a while now and having heard a lot about the beast that is Scojo, I have to say that if any other boarder had posted that picture everyone would have united in celebrating its mild amusingness.

Cos it's worth a snort.

Up there with the Shield which Channel 5 has considerately bumped it to midnight to make way for the excellent 'Embarrassing '80's', which has John McCrirrick's invaluable memories of the Sinclair C5.

H'mmm. Did somebody record the wrong programme?

How exactly are they going to enforce this? This is the standard arrangement for things like trekking the Great Wall of China where the charity are involved in the logistics, organisation and tranportation for individuals, but precisely how much support are they giving (or is needed) for people to walk through London?

I'm with Floyd Kermode block. Tell them to ram it and let them know exactly how much they're losing out on as a consequence of their misrepresentation/cheek.

"Robbie and I always talked about finishing Dante and it does look like that's just what we are going to do."

WOW! Nobody else remotely intrigued by this news?

I'm very surprised to see Project Overkill is being reprinted. Surely it's purely for curiosity's sake, not because it was good or anything? It was the fillerest filler that ever did fill.

But what's it about?

Just checked and I was half right. It was mentioned and lots of people then said it was great news. Ah well.

So, what's Project Overkill about? I've never heard of it. I probably wont be buying that EE, however, as I've read Shako about a million times before.

Not to piss on anyone's story-scooping chips, but wasn't the Fraser on Dante thing mentioned the last time somebody posted a Previews thread and nobody mentioned it?

This must be the longest run of Dante in an age. Good show.

They're very much like scruffy pigs to look at and they've got big, knobbly warts and lumps all over their long, hairy faces.

They are very, very ugly indeed...

My mate keeps going to all the reunion gigs and stuff. They were mildly amusing at the time, but I really can't see the attraction in driving to Birmingham to see them now.
