The kid at the start wasn't being fed to the space whale because he did rubbish in a test. He was being fed to the space whale for ignoring the punishment of not being allowed to use the lifts and having to walk back home (or something).

I think it was a judgement call. It cared for the kids and blamed the adults for choosing to stay ignorant when the answer was obvious all along. The kids don't get to vote until they're 16.

I've got the book around here somewhere. Don't recall any direct copying/tracing of Bisley's work and I think it's intended as more of a homage than straightforward plagiarism. Pretty sure I read an interview with the artist a number of years ago in which he mentions that he's a fan of Bisley's.

The "Slaine" character in this is actually a cyborg who [spoiler]ends up getting his head ripped off by the baddy who then attaches his own head to the body because it's the "strongest body on Earth"[/spoiler] or something.
