Just watch their facial expressions - there are a few tips on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Speechcraft#Persuasion_Guide if you haven't seen that already...

The persuasion mini-game really is a bit naff - yet another thing I use a mod to replace with a better system.

QuoteWhy aren't these evil tower/ badies lairs clearly signposted ? It must be hell if its your first day as an intern!
You should try the first two Elder Scrolls games if you think that's bad - the mazes in Arena and Daggerfall are crazy large and confusing.  Luckily there are spells that allow you to pass through the walls - but even then you can get stuck in a dungeon for weeks...

By the way, if you're interested, Bethesda made the first two Elder Scrolls title available as freeware - you can get Arena from http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/Fichiers/ArenaSetup.exe, and Daggerfall from http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/Fichiers/DaggerfallSetup.exe - these versions are already set up to work with modern operating systems, so no faffing around with Dosbox.

I gave up on Oblivion after playing for about 10 hours and still being level 1. I found the levelling system to be delberately opaque and, frankly, annoying.
One word - FCOM.  I can't play unmodded Oblivion, and FCOM is an absolute must in my own game - overhauls leveling, creatures, and pretty much everything else.

I also throw WAC in there as well, to add some more interesting spawns - I'm a lore freak and most of the spawns don't feel too out of place - although there's a hidden easter egg smurf village with tiny smurfs running around  :o

QuoteDon't use a game guide! Pick a direction and walk - go explore! Much more fun.
I was going to suggest this myself, as that's exactly what I do - using game guides makes things too mechanical - you don't need to do what they say, and failing to complete quests is but a part of the experience - but I think Doc needs a bit of focus, otherwise I can see her wandering around in circles for ages, getting nowhere :P

You mean Phintias.  Does he like you?  His disposition towards you needs to be 60+ for the dialogue option to appear.

Quotecan't find the thingy to close the gate...
Do you have the key to the Sigil tower?  If not, you need to find the tower with the Sigil Keeper, kill him and then use that key elsewhere in order to access the Sigil Tower.

QuoteOblivion is easy as piss, I finished it as a level 4 or something low-tier like that, as the level-up system is so dumb I just didn't bother with it.

Play Skyrim instead.  A far better gaming experience, and one of the few RPGs I've gone platinum on.
I think it's worth playing Oblivion first, if only to realise what a gem Skyrim actually is.  Plus, Doc and Steam don't get on, and Skyrim is a Steam-only game on PC.

QuoteSo as far as I am concerned my player is hibernating in a tunnel surrounded by dead bodies. I'm sure he will be ok until I decide to play it again.
:D

My brother-in-law bought the game for the 360 when it first came out.  He got as far as Kvatch, tried unsuccessfully to enter the Oblivion gate, got annoyed and traded the game in.  He hadn't realised that you needed to click on the gate in order to enter it - he'd been walking through the gate from one side to the other dozens of times and thought his game was bugged.  This is the same guy that gave up on Fallout 3 when decided to take on dozens of ghouls in a tunnel and didn't have any ammo or a back-up save to use.   He later realized the error of his ways with both games - he'd been trying to play them both FPS-style.

On the other hand I found Oblivion ridiculously easy and simplistic, particularly coming straight from Morrowind - so I thought just maybe, perhaps, Doc Alt 8 might have a little more luck with this one.

Doc, if you're still in the Oblivion gate, go into your game settings and turn down the difficulty for now.  Kill the enemy you're stuck on, close the gate, and then turn back the difficulty to default and head to a town to stock up on supplies etc.

Don't be rushed by the journal - nothing is actually timed, the only thing that happens is that Oblivion gates "randomly" open in the wilds until you finish the main quest.  Nothing too annoying though.

Go join a guild, or do some random exploring - the main quest will continue to push you until you've finished it - but from a roleplaying point of view try and see it as more of a longer-term objective - realise that you need to get yourself up to spec before you have a decent chance of becoming Champion of Cyrodiil.

Loving the thread title.

Oblivion is heavily leveled, so it shouldn't matter greatly what level you are when you enter Kvatch.

However, doing this at level one is a pretty crazy thing to do.   This is an issue with the narrative, and the "quickly, quickly" drive that it pushes you to.

Try and take things slower...hold off on the main quest until you've got a few more items and a few more skills.  It really doesn't make much roleplaying sense that an unskilled level 1 prisoner can defeat the Daedric hordes!

There aren't any goblins in Kvatch - I think you mean Scamps (goblins are mortal creatures from the wilds of the countryside, whereas scamps are daedra from Oblivion who are technically immortal but who can be temporarily defeated by damaging them so much that they are banished back to Oblivion).

Did you speak with Ilend Vonius?  You probably need his assistance to survive the tower.

It might just be that you're not yet ready - if you're still struggling, try heading away from Kvatch and stocking up on armor/enchantments/spells/scrolls etc.

QuoteSo I think that I will now be trying my hand at Oblivion...
If you've exhausted what you're able to do in Morrowind, then that seems like a good option.
I'm sure you'll come back to Morrowind at some stage, though!

Oblivion is a very different beast - much more immediate, and a lot less RPG - and a LOT easier!

Having said that, if you're used to Morrowind, you'll probably miss some of the things you're used to, and won't take advantage of the new features in Oblivion.

One thing I'd suggest - Unlike Morrowind, Oblivion does really need mods to get the best from it.  Start playing the game, and when you get annoyed with something we'll see how we can get it fixed.

Shall we start a new thread for Oblivion? :)

QuoteWHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THIS ??????
You would be shocked by some of the other mods available then.

QuoteLevel 70 is the highest you can get.... Even if I manage to get the extra two point to get 100 in conjunction... I need points to gain level 71... And being a magic user you only gain points for magic skills not anything else...
If you're a naughty magic user, and get sent to jail, you'll lose some skillpoints but not attributes - you can then take advantage of a game glitch and go to a master trainer and get trained back up to where you were before...each time doing so will contribute to your character levelling so before too long you'll gain another level.

QuoteNow dispite compleating the main quest.... And being acknowledged and called Neverine by all unsundry...
When I visit certain leaders... They are expecting me to complete tasks to gain their vote as Horator....
If you've already completed the main quest then you've already been named Hortator by each of the houses.
Even if you're hortator, that doesn't automatically make you a master member of a house - think of the title as honorary, and a necessity in order for the Nerevarine prophecy to come to pass.
Are you instead trying to join and gain rank in the great houses?   If so, bear in mind that some quests are mutually exclusive - and depending on how you handled the main quest you might be locked out of some of the great house quests.

QuoteMabs has public-spiritedly posted the link above.

Look! Up there! Further up...there!

That was the link to the sign-up for the newsletter rather than the newsletter itself, which I did a couple of of days ago...but haven't received anything through my in-box...

Wasn't even aware there was a newsletter.

Signed up a couple of days ago as soon as I saw the thread, but presumably now too late to receive the prezzies  :'(

Don't suppose there's a kind soul out there who could forward a copy of said newsletter/link to prezzies?

The Slaine game was at least atmospheric, although I remember being confused as to what was going on most of the time.

Johnny Alpha looked like a yellow tulip in The Killing.  Flobadob.

still would like to know why the spells didn't work...
Me too.  Which spells in particular don't work, and which spells do work?  Let's see if we can pin it down.

Hah, so there's a new edition of Morrowind out then :)

Hope you get Steam sorted out...what you'll need to do is to back up your save games (I can talk you through this if you don't know where to find them), uninstall your current version of the game and install the Steam version, then copy your current savegame to the new Steam location.  Sounds complex, but really pretty easy.

I did this myself not so long ago - had the boxed retail version from 2002, and got fed up having to keep finding the (increasingly scratched) disc each time I wanted to install, so bought the Steam version when it was on sale.  Just copied my save games over, and they worked fine.

What spells do you have?  Do you have enough magicka to cast them?  Have you tried buying or making more powerful (or less powerful) spells?
