I'm not convinced I'm remembering this correctly, but the Alien novelisation had Dallas in a cocoon and (I think) said something about how each drone can directly implant one host, without having an egg/facehugger around - no mention of turning the victim into an egg.

I think it also said that a host implanted by a drone will produce a queen, but I wouldn't swear to it - it's been about ten years since I read it and could be entirely wrong (but hey, these here's the intarwebs; being correct is an optional extra).

Sinfest!  Grud's greenies, I'd forgotten about that one.  That guy's art is just staggeringly pretty.

Warp 9 to Hell is another good one - it's got a certain sick and twisted humour that might, just maybe, appeal to a few of the boarders here.  It's not been updated for a couple of years, but the old strips are still up for all to see.

The next Twiglet Zone's up, by the by.  It has a cameo cow.

Cheers :)

The font's markerfelt or markerpen or something like that; it's just one of the standard fonts in Photoshop, not a custom job or anything flash like that.

The next update should be around the end of the week, all things being equal.

Blimey.  Cup of tea, shiny new prog through the door and an ego boost as well; not a bad way to start the day, all in all :)

Books & Comics / Gratuitous Self-Pimpage

...Or possibly pimpery, or even pimposity; the Oxford English Dictionary offers shockingly little clarification on the matter.

Anyway.  My dinky little webcomic submitted for your approval, o great and glorious Hivemind.  There's not much in the way of nail-biting action and adventure, but if you have a thing for people sitting on sofas and drinking tea this could be the comic for you.

Fame and fortune shall surely follow, for obviously that is the fate of all who put something on these interwebs.

Prog / Re: PROG 1546 Law Crimes

To be honest I'd be far more surprised if the council had agreed with him.  Regardless of how highly they value Dredd's experience and opinions and how much they may owe him, I can't see them overturning such a huge piece of legislation overnight just on the recommendation of one senior judge.

I think it's about right that they'd order a review based on Dredd's concerns (which could easily be a fairly major process and not just a case of "Oh, yeah, we'll think about it").  They'd also have to debate what the new laws would be, how they'd be phased in, that sort of thing.

Come to think of it, the Council might also be acutely aware that Dredd's bloodline have a history of going off the rails, which could be another reason for them not to immediately grant his every request.

One of the reasons I'm loving this storyline is that I have no idea how it'll turn out in the long run.  The council might decide not to change anything, which would undoubtedly provoke an interesting reaction from Dredd.  If they repealed the laws it'd obviously mean big changes for MC1, and it'd be interesting to see how the norms and muties cope.  If things go badly it could easily force the Judges into a more hardline, totalitarian position (and again, both the change and the fallout from it would make for interesting reading).

Off Topic / Basra Badger-Baiting Bonanza!

From the BBC news website;

'British forces have denied rumours that they released a plague of ferocious badgers into the Iraqi city of Basra.

Word spread among the populace that UK troops had introduced strange man-eating, bear-like beasts into the area to sow panic.

UK military spokesman Major Mike Shearer said: "We can categorically state that we have not released man-eating badgers into the area."'

"Now, young Potter, you will --"

"You never knew what happened to your father..."

"Isn't that my line?  Look, don't try and change the --"

"I am your father."

"... You what?"

"Yeah, funny story.  I was messing about with some time travel magic, and, long story short, nine months later there you were.  Well, nine months later and a few decades earlier, but that's time travel for you."

"You're seriously saying you're my father?"

"Why d'you think you've never been able to kill me?  It'd stop you being born and cause a paradox.  Well, I think it would, I'm not really sure; I spent most of that lecture in the back row with your mum, so a lot of it kinda passed me by."

"Wuh?"

"Besides, if you need more proof, just look at yourself.  You hate everything I stand for, you want to destroy the world, you dress in black: you're the archetypal teenager.  You're emo, you are."

"NOOOOOOOO!"

"Presumably this year's Xmas episode will involve the Tardis jumping over a giant space shark."

Hmm.  I'm betting a giant space shark would be a million degrees of awesome next to whatever actually features in the Xmas special.

(Technically, though, if it's in space and floating around in zero gravity, could you actually jump over the shark or would you just be drifting around it?)

Maybe they're being extremely cunning; after they've announced she'll be the companion for the entire series, nobody will see it coming when she gets spectacularly deaded ten minutes into episode two.

Maybe it was actually Donna who picked up Ming's ring at the end of the last episode, and she'll somehow morph into the Master's next incarnation.  At least that would put a slightly different spin on the inevitable companion's-unrequited-love-for-the-Doctor bit.

Maybe the Beeb have decided that, since the Doctor is a time traveller, they can run April Fool's stories about the series at any time.

Not that I'm clutching at straws or anything.

Another one for the "fuck'ssakes" camp, but to be fair she was nowhere near as bad as I expected in the Christmas thing.  Come to think of it I didn't expect to like Rose much either, so I may yet be pleasantly surprised.

Do have to wonder why, though.  Maybe she genuinely was the best actor they could get, and maybe they've got things planned for her character that would beat any other companion hands-down.  Then again, maybe they just couldn't be arsed.

On a slight tangent, was there any pattern in Old Who for what sort of companions were picked and how they came to be travelling with the Doctor?

"The flaws in new Who seem to me to stem from a self congratulatory, "that'll do" attitude, which is my problem really"

Seconded.  A lot of the more mediocre episodes were dragged down by plot holes that seemed like they could have been fixed with a few minutes' thought and/or a half-decent editor; the fact that they weren't fixed gives the impression that the powers that be don't think the programme or the audience is worth the effort, and it's hard not to be irritated by that.

We've had a few cracking New Who episodes, and it's annoying to think we could have had a lot more if it weren't for someone's "ah, that's good enough" attitude (admittedly I have no idea if that's actually the case, but it seems like it).

Top man.  Hope all's well.

As for why we've got two kidneys when one apparently suffices, I vaguely recall reading that this sort or thing can be modelled with an algorithm that balances the resources required to grow more than one, any advantages of having more than one, the likelihood of one getting damaged and the trouble you'd be in if yours did get seriously damaged.

That said, a quick search of the ol' intarwebs turns up nothing of the sort, so I may just be regurgitating something heard in the pub.
