Alpha's arrival to Dredd's timeline could be explained in that he cad come from a future of another dimension wherein the time shift crossed over to Dredd's dimension thus cancelling out Alpha's world a future of Dredd's.

Good grief, don't you think things are complicated enough as they are without bringing other dimensions into it? Sure, we know they exist within the setting, there's no reason to add them to this situation.

Quote from: Mike Gloady on 24 August, 2009, 10:22:47 PMMy reading of "The Americans" was that Dredd and MC1 were keeping their possible involvement in the future near-destruction of Brit-Cit firmly under their hat to ensure that Alpha's world would come to pass.  Easily one of the best "done in one" Dredds in a long time.

Yes, I was rather wary of that story, but when I finally read it I was extremely impressed.

At the start of Portrait of a Mutant it says that "nobody knew who fired the first missile". It could be there was a lot of politics leading up to that point, but since there's no speculation as to who was directly involved almost suggests a sudden, random act of madness. This fits well with the idea that MC1 has to do something terrible to ensure the world's survival. I can only think of one person who could do it.

Quote from: JayzusB.Christ on 20 August, 2009, 12:56:12 PMAs far as I'm concerned, Al Ewing sorted it out:  Now that they know SD world is a possible future, they can stop it happening.

On the contrary, they absolutely have to ensure it happens. Alpha was an essential part of ending Judgement Day. Without him, the world dies.

It's one thing to change the future; it's another thing to change a future that has already affected the past.

QuoteComics continuity is just a massive pain in the hole

For DC and Marvel, perhaps, but for 2000AD it's remarkably coherent. I've said it before, I'll say it now and I'll say it in the future: the timeline is not a problem, it's an opportunity to tell some very, very interesting stories.

IDW's line of hardcover annotated reprints starts in November.

Bugger. I bought secondhand copies of the reprints through Amazon a year or two ago. That said, I think they amount to selected strips, so this appeals to the completist in me.

Here's an amazing omission,
Bury my knee at wounded heart.

There are quite a few others but this is definately a major fan favourite.[/color]

Yes, that's pretty serious... but then I suspect this is not a book intended for fans. However, even saying that I think it's an odd package. Personally, I'd have focused on single episode stories, with a few two- and three-parters thrown in, and none of the extracts from larger stories.

I have to say, though, that the cover, both back and front, is really, really good!

The F-104 Starfighter was nick-named 'The Widowmaker' due to the high accident rate. Hard to hide that in your boot holster though.

Sadly Wikipedia failed me, but Google saved the day:

I'm sure their are others.

This one however had me laughing... nervously...

Quote from: Mardroid on 10 August, 2009, 01:08:04 AMThen again I often wondered about the use of the lawrod too as the lawgiver's range is quite a way. (Mind you long range doesn't necesarily mean good accuracy. I wonder if the down-the-barel sight has a zoom function?.)

The Lawgiver is supposed to be accurate to up to a kilometre, but I'd imagine that its power isn't so hot at that range. The Lawrod probably provides not just the range but the power to punch through material harder than flesh.

The Widowmaker. Is that standard issue big gun for Justice Dept? I wondered if it would be the law-rod mark 2 when I saw it last issue. (Then again I've only seen the law-rod in Case files 1- although I'm sure it appears elsewhere.)

If I remember correctly, the Widowmaker was first introduced in Judgement Day and was specifically described as the replacement for the outdated Law Rod. Mind you, I've never quite understood why you'd replace a rifle with a machine gun.

The military types can correct me, but I'm pretty certain there's a real-world gun called the Widowmaker. It really doesn't sound like a name that Justice Department would give to a gun, though. Something like the Law Bringer would at least follow form.

No. No it hasn't. Unless, of course, by 'bloody dogs' you mean people who don't know just how lucky we all are to live here.

I managed a mere 46%. However, I don't feel so bad about that since I rushed through it, didn't check my answers and misread a few as a result! And on one or two of the numerical ones I was only out by a margin (I mean, what's the difference bewtween 15 and 16 million under-19s unless you're a planning department of some variety?).

Odd mix of questions, some that seemed entirely reasonable, others that seemed irrelevant. However, if you think about it, there's a logic to some of them. For example, the utterly bizarre one about the year of women's right to divorce. Most of us won't know the answer, but some cultures and countries might not allow divorce at all, so putting the date in the test handbook is part of educating potential applicants about women's rights in the UK. The question seems stupid to us, but it's a subtle and rather important part of understanding British life.
