Quote from: TordelBack on 19 January, 2010, 01:23:17 PMThe years given for certain events differ, e.g. Block Mania is 2103 in the Archives, 2104 in the RPG.    Not making any judgements, just observing.

My timeline puts it at 2103.

Publication date was 31/10/81-26/12/81 according to the 2000AD Micro-Guide (1977=2099 so 1981=2103).

Oh, and the Tom of Finland book (for those who know) is the wife's!

Ha! I spotted that and was going to comment on it, but then read the above.

Quote from: Peter Wolf on 16 January, 2010, 01:13:11 AMIts like you see a clip of Torchwood which i have never watched before ever and it just looked like some ridiculous spoof or comedy type thing.

Oh, it is, it is. Although that probably wasn't the intention.

Alan Grant was just generalising about "academe" / Academia ? which is forgivable in the context of a short interview but the way i see it is that there is Academia that is worthwhile and which contributes something positive and there is Junk academia and at the moment in regard to academia that is affiliated to govt or that which influences govt policy making the vast majority of it is Junk and potentially harmful and destructive.

It's very easy to dismiss anything we don't like or agree with as junk. That does not mean it is junk, however, no matter how much we may wish it to be.

And the main think about academia is that if you're doing or saying anything of actual interest or consequence, then you're constantly under the scrutiny of your peers, and your assertions are tested, so you can only get away with junk for so long.

Not directly related to this interview but a point I've raised before. I'm always simply amazed that Norm Breyfogle seems to be almost entirely sidelined from American comics....... His take was full of dark speed, violent energy and dangerous humour. It was superb. Alan Grant's scripts played to that to the fullest (or vice versa).

Breyfolge was a favourite of mine, although I completely lost touch with his work after I gave-up on comics (with a couple of obvious exceptions) in the late 90s. He's probably too expensive, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in 2000AD.

QuoteI clearly don't know all the in's and out but it staggers me to this day that when I team like Grant and Breyfogle pitch a Batman idea DC don't bite their hands off.

It's probably more than fair to say that Grant breathed some much needed life and fun into Batman in the 90s. However, although he says his Batman pitches have been good ones, his contributions to Dredd and Anderson have been pretty weak for many years now. I don't think we can simply take his word about the quality of his ideas.

This bit caught my attention:

Since the comic was published, my views may have moderated somewhat. But not very much. I still believe we live in an upside-down society, where genuine worth to mankind counts for zilch while the ability to lie, steal, and kill can propel you to high office. In strictly economic terms, there are only two types of human being: productive and nonproductive (or parasitic); virtually all of the world's problems are caused by those parasites—politicians, lawyers, academe, etc.

I wonder what exactly he means by academe.

I work in a hospital laboratory. One of the key aspects of our work is cancer diagnostics. In order to do this, we rely on knowledge and techniques gained through staggering amounts of accumulated and ongoing research conducted by academics. What right has Grant to dismiss such people as parastites, especially when his contribution to society is, at best, loft insulation?

I think he is speaking generally and not specific (he's not far wrong when it comes to the establishment) and his right is everyone's right, it's his opinion and if you think his work is only worth wallpaper maybe you should view his opinion the same.

I think his best work is jolly good fun (even if I do keep most of it in the attic), but even so what he contributes to society as a writer is certainly no more than most members of those groups he condemns as parasites.

Obviously, my personal beef here is the issue of academe. I really would like to know exactly what he's referring to.

Does anyone else find the cover of Broken Swastika reminiscent of John Burns' style? A little rougher, less polished, perhaps?

I feel sorry for Matt Smith - bumped into one of the most anticipated roles in Television and the best compliment he's had so far is "Well, at least he's an ugly fecker!".

How shallow we are.

I dunno... saying that his flat, square face is non-pretty is not the same as saying he's ugly. Personally, I think he's a perfectly pleasant looking chap, and more appealing than, say, Captain jack, precisely because he's not just another off-shelf prettyboy and has some actual character to his mush. More of it on TV, please, and the same goes for the women.

I'd say something nice about his acting (if justified), but I've never seen anything else he's done.

Quote from: Ochs on 09 January, 2010, 10:32:57 AMAs for Jo Grant. Have you seen her now? How did such an atractive woman turn into a hideous crone.

I believe it's a natural process, commonly referred to as aging.
