Other Reviews / 2000AD Script Book
12 January, 2017, 04:00:22 PM

I found this probably one of the best 2000AD purchases I've ever made.

Because it publishes the script against the finished artwork, you can have a lot of fun figuring out how the artist solved/avoided/ignored/embellished the writers request.

And then after looking at individual stories you can compare different writer styles, from John Wagner's economic direction to John Smith's 'worthy of publishing as prose'.

Also it contains the first reprinting of Lawless which is always something special.
Its a pretty heavy tome as well

Back from my first ever trip to Thought Bubble and there's so many Small Press/indie/home-made comics out there.

Is there a website that reviews them critically? I'm sure everyone of them is a well-intentioned endeavour but it's really hard to know where to start.

Ironically given I'm a 2000ad fan but the Anthologies in particular seem everywhere and I'm really just trying to find good collaborations between a single writer and author. Any recommendations?

Film & TV / Doctor Strange review
26 October, 2016, 04:12:01 PM
There are easy criticisms to be made of this film:

- Benedict is playing the same role as Sherlock
- Origin stories by their nature are too formulaic
- Marvel care more about the overall arc to the next Avengers film than this.

So whilst all of those points have small truths in them, this film is pretty damn enjoyable and satisfying, not least to Steve Ditko's amazing visuals.

It is jaw dropping what you see on screen. The fights are more magical than Potter and there's a logic at work even in the most bonkers action. Marvel even provides a worth villain

And Benedict if anything comes across more like a likeable version of House, so he's got some range.
So I'd give it a solid B+ and now the character is established you can do even more off the hook stuff with him.

Hi guys

I thought both the IDW Dredd collections that IDW coloured (Apocalypse & Dark Judges) were pretty strong with sympathetic colours.

My daughter won't look at Halo in B&W. Could we have a *30th Anniversary version in colour produced largely for US but available here as well?

*since end of Bk3

Like you've done with the Steve McManus book, could Lawless come out as a Limited Edition hardback.

1. It been a stand-out in the Meg from episode 1
2. Phill Winslade has described it as his life's work
3. This month's magazine wrap-around cover would look great on a dust-jacket
4. I'd be willing to pay more

Just asking. I know generally the hardbacks don't sell as well so I was just hoping for a limited run of a 100 hardbacks sold through the website.

p.s pale endpapers so Phill can sketch on them OK?

Classifieds / Wanted Durham Red: Empty Suns
01 June, 2016, 11:01:29 PM
Anyone got a spare / unwanted copy ? PM me.
#68
It's clear that the re-defined Durham Red is still visually a definitive version.
Leah Moore did a take in the Sci-Fi special and she's on the FCBD cover.

Mark's doing great work on the Grey Area but speaking to him its clear that he's not done with the character and as JJ Abrams proved with the Star Trek Universe, you can have parallel universes. So, my thought is why not get Mark Harrison back on Durham Red.

Help! / Help from Nikolai Dante fans...
15 March, 2016, 08:45:56 PM
1. Did the Great Game ever come out with this cover? (or was it just used for publicity)
2. Anyone read the Dante novels? Are they as much fun/canon?
3. Anyone get a set of graphic novels where the spines match up?

Other Reviews / GOLDTIGER
15 March, 2016, 02:43:35 PM
Antonio Barreti is a genius and its high time 2000ad recognised the Italian master who influenced generations to come. I can't believe how close his characters came to appearing in Prog 1.

All this is of course utter tripe but GOLDTIGER is a very very funny fictional history of a comic strip that never was. I loved it. Especially the prose pages that bridged missing pages in the reprint.

I don't want to reveal to much but they've managed to blend reality and fiction by including references and quotes from some 2000ad stalwarts.

Well done for publishing this 2000ad.

Film & TV / Terminator Genisys is a stinker
03 July, 2015, 12:51:07 PM
It starts with 30 mins of re-tread/remix/reboot of the first two films which is OK fluff but horribly cast (sarah connor looks about 16)
Then it moves forward a gear and a couple of decades into an utter misfire where Arnie as the Terminator turns into Basil Exposition having to explain 'Nexus events' that cause memories from parallel times to be remembered.

There's a clever sequence in a hospital with a good use of everyday technology but the film then staggers on for another 40 mins of tosh of CGI helicopters, shooting projectors and dear GOD Matt Smith (the Doctor himself) is utterly wasted in this time travel movie - which is a tragic irony in itself.

It's really bad. Just avoid and send a message to Hollywood on this one.

This is the last of seven books I've tried to do completing every Ian Kennedy story.
I've placed the covers where they 'read' best so it interesting slotting them in to the story.

I've got a soft spot for the two Dan Dares meeting up, even if the writing is pretty unspectacular - the art is a triumph.

One for the pedants - i did leave out the final Ian Kennedy story 'Galactic Marshall pt 1' where he rounds up a teenager to help him fight something - I couldn't face it. I love the final special story 'Don't drink the water'.

If Dark Justice wasn't written by John Wagner I would suspect it was intentionally written as a strong treatment of how to do a movie sequel:

1) It re-locates the action to a sci-fi location (the Virgin Atlantic) that can still use real places (corn field, soccer stadium)
2) It brings Anderson and Dredd back together and throws in a small additional team
3) It plays to dark visual effects being cheaper and hides Death

But it is written by John, and having met the chap I'm 100% sure it was not his intention.

Still you can wish - and it would be pretty easy to explain in an inter-stellar dimensional accident how the Dark Judges were created.

Help! / Anyone got this Dan Dare strip?
17 October, 2014, 03:57:26 PM
Hi guys
I've been trying to find copies of the Dan Dare strip that ran in Eagle Flies Again fanzine (Ian Wheeler)

Gerry Embleton drew it in a lovely tribute to his run on the early 'new' Eagle.

Has anyone got the issues or be willing to scan them for me?

Hi I'm looking for a page that I think is by Barry Kitson

Dredd is dealing with a Lizard (like finishing up / tieing up) whilst there's a beautiful female judge by his side (but not anderson)

if it is Barry it would be 460s or nearby but I don't have the issues

help - If Ive imagined this it was a great page

Hi guys

NICE Con in Bedford have just announced wave 3 of talent including the co-creators of Dredd.
If you get in quick you'll get a free head sketch with your ticket.

http://nicecon.co.uk

I can thoroughly recommend the experience of this convention which in it's third year boasts names like Guillem March, Adi Granov, Barry Kitson, Simon Bisley and Dylan Teague.

Please support. Mat
