I've read it.
It is a brilliant book. Very powerful.
Mainstream enough for the time-travel concept to work with non-geeks too!

Help! / Which new PC should I get Hivemind?
22 June, 2009, 03:42:09 PM
Ahoy there Sailors!

My PC is dying.
With 3 kids under 2 years old I don't have any budget to play with, around £550 I reckon is the max I could spring for.

I wondered if any of you had advice/recommendations on a replacement machine/supplier or current issues I should be aware of?

Here are two I am looking at to give you an idea:

Novatech clearance section
Isys EX nVidia Pro - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 4GB DDR 800Mhz 500gb HDD nVidia 9600GT 512Mb DVDRW
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... ml?PC-1238

New from MESH
XGS Special Edition (with Graphics upgrade to 1GB ATi HD4850)
http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.as ... KEY=551426

I don't need a new monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers or printer.
If push came to shove I could keep XP-Home from old machine as my OS for a while.

My purchasing priorities:
1.Quality components and reliable retailer
2.Graphics card
3.Processor

Any advice?

An ice cream van in space?

Perhaps everyone was blinded by screwballs burning up on re-entry?

I really would like to know who decides what the sound effects should be and where they should go.

And do you personally READ them or just let them enter your subconscious?

Huzzah!
Welcome back to the struggle Comrade.

At the current rate of returning prodigals and newbies seeing the light I predict we will take control of the UK in Sept 2011.

Quote from: "TordelBack"And still I ask, is there a worse beach-head on the west coast of Britain than Holyhead?

Now, if we attack where the line is strongest, then Fritz
will think that our reconnaissance is a total shambles.
This will lull him into a sense of false security, and
then next week we can attack where the line is actually
badly defended. And win the greatest victory since the
Winchester flower-arranging team beat Harrow by twelve
sore bottoms to one!

See here is a case in point:

This week's prog 1640, Savage pg2, panel 4. Three norts/geeks/nazis/volgs being shot and a speech bubble sound effect "CHORT!"
What the hell is that? Chort?
It was a bit of speech in this case, so presumably scripted by Pat. But it got me thinking about sound effects. For example same strip, pg 5, first panel, "HHRAOWWL". Who decides which sound effects to put where? The writer, the artist, the letterer?
Do they argue about it?
"No, no Pat, being shot from that range with that calibre of subby produces an involuntary "Churrghh" cry. "Chort" is what you get if they were using shotguns with slugs."

I have been reading Tooth for 25+ years and have always just absorbed the sound effects subliminally. Surely you are not supposed to read and analyse them?!!

Look there are 13 BDAMMs and 1 BDAMMFF in this weeks Dredd.
9 initial smaller BDAMMs from the fruity nutter, then 1 huge BDAMM from Dredd's single, deliberate shot. Excellent. But am I supposed to consciously appreciate that, or is it just part of the background context to be absorbed as my brain creates an imaginary fluid story?
Then at the end, Judge Lamia's exorcism gun goes BDAMMFF, similar enough for continuity of realism, but distinct because of her unusual hardware (yes, yes, Mardroid's moving boobs theory snigger, snigger etc.).

WHAT HAVE YOU FREAKS DONE TO ME?! Can't I just read the Prog anymore?  ;)

I have been impressed by most people's restraint here given the subject matter.

I know I am still a newbie round these parts but in my opinion it might be better to all walk away from this thread now before it has a chance to snowball and damage what is a very good community.
If I was a mod here I would lock it. [/mytuppenceworth]

Nope, but that cover is making me laugh.

I'm guessing a 40ft Gorilla thing is gonna be kinda easy to recognise, with or without a banana costume.
Wish I had read it as a kid now.

Could be great. The old post-apocalyptic survivor genre of scavenging through the remains of a fallen civilisation is one of my favourites. I have already noted down where the sports shops that sell guns are near me, plus a van hire place for sensible transport and Calshot Castle would make a good base I reckon. Not that I think about these thing too much.

Oh yeah, and there are some walking plant things of course.

Wotcha!

Do let us know your initial impressions as you encounter the weekly prog and the awesome cast of older characters in 2000ad collected material. Always interested to see what it looks like from the outside.

I'll tell ya, reading 2000ad sure gets everything onto an even keel; yes Sir, Gets Everything onto an Even Keel alright.
(Run, run while you still can. They got me but it's not too late for you.)

1. Radiator - love your style.

2. MyGrimmBrother #01 -because I want an alternate reality where Bruce Wayne became a Judge.

3. Johnnystress #02 - this is the piece of kit I wish Justice Dept had.

HM - Professor Byah - would have fitted brilliantly with the clingnet, spycam and other dodgy Justice Dept kit you could buy in those adverts back in progs past.
