I saw,The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, recently too. Liked it a lot.

Superbob, yesterday on Amazon Prime.

It's a comedy superhero film, with a largely British cast set largely in a place I used to go regularly: Peckham.

How did I miss this?

Bob is basically an ex postman , who got bit by a meteor in Rye Park and ended up with Superman powers. It's essentially about him balancing being a superhero with having a life, and how he is exploited. So not the most original thing, maybe, but with the tone it all somehow works. Or it did for me, anyway.

It's told in the form of a kind of documentary. It has a strong element of parody, yet does its own thing too. I found it very funny in places, but it's not afraid to go 'sad and poignant' too. Generally a rather sweet film, that's not afraid to be rather silly, and have a decent message to.

I enjoyed that a lot.

Shortly before that, I saw The Girl with all the Gifts.

Kind of another take on the Zombie genre, but not JUST another take on the Zombie genre. Well worth watching.

I just can't think of them being in the same universe because the tech in this is so much beyond anything they had in TOS.
My issue with this (common) criticism, is that warp drive and transporters aside, the tech we have NOW is beyond TOS! Discovery is "the future imagined from a 2018 perspective" whilst TOS was "the future imagined from a 1960s perspective".

I've recently been watching a lot of TNG, and there's an episode where the big reveal is that the computer has been infected with a program that is spreading from system to system .. almost like ... a virus - cutting edge in the 80s, but now you just wonder why they don't have any anti-malware running.

While I largely agree with that, I found myself puzzled by the prevalence of holographic communications technology in Discovery. I don't really have an issue with holographic tech existing in this time period, but it does seem to be used too much here. In the recent episode, a bloke accuses Captain Pike of being like his grandmother by 'communicating by screen'. They ALWAYS communicated via screen, even in the spin-off shows! Holographic communication became a larger thing in the later series of DS9 and that seemed to be only for specific situations.

I'd just about buy the idea that they used holographic communication on Discovery due to it being a cutting edge science vessel* but that reference from the prison bloke in episode 3 suggested all the hip kids were using it.

*not too much of a stretch. One of the lecturers at my university mentioned 'blue ray technology' and even gave me a good layman's understanding of it. This was just before ordinary DVDs came out (or maybe they'd just come out? I don't think so, though) and a good few years (maybe even a decade) before blu-Ray actually appeared.

The 'just what you see, pal' guy when Arnie asks for a plasma rifle in the something* watt range? I think you are right Sheridan, although I didn't think that was a pawn shop.

He's got one of those faces I always recognise, but can rarely remember where I saw him. I don't mean that in a negative way.

*40? I know, I know. Google is my friend.....

General Plot Rule #3: Any character falling into water/undefined fog, cloud or darkness/a mysterious energy vortex IS NOT DEAD.
Oh I think the 'dark' Lorca is definitely a goner. We saw his body destroyed, if I remember correctly.

The was something off with the graphics to me too, and it was mainly that blurriness. I think that was the intentional style though.

I think my mind cancelled or out by the end.

Yes, probably one of, if not the best Spider-Man movie, and that's for a character* who had been served pretty well in the movies.

*Okay,it's mainly a different character, but Peter Parker still  has a fairly major role.

Also - anyone else dying to know if/what happened to Lorca Prime and whether we'll see Jason Isaacs again...

I've wondered about him too, although I hope he doesn't turn up too soon. A few more episodes on, or even season 3 (should it be renewed) is fine.

Booked! Not the first comic convention I've been to, but the others were relatively local.

Technically it's not the first 2000ad specific one I've been to either as I did go to the 2000ad anniversary event a couple of years back, but I didn't see much of the main event itself. Money was tighter back then, but I had a free pass to the Strontium Dog fanfilm as I had a couple small roles In it. They were wrapping up the main event by that point. (I guess I could have come earlier but I didn't want to take liberties by gatecrashing the main thing.)

Stayed for the follow up film and drinks in the bar later though. It was nice, but it will be good to experience a real Dredd/2000ad convention!

I'd best book a hotel next, I guess!

Well, I really enjoyed episode 2 of the new series, too.

Me too. It was a proper old-school type Star-Treky episode as well, with Prime Directive* and salvation via science stuff too**, and questions concerning the mysteries of the universe, etc.

*Albeit under a different name.

**I'm not sure the
asteroid ploy
would have worked mind you.

Windsor Davies, 88.

Aw. Loved the video in that article. Thanks for posting. First time I encountered it, I think. Mind you... year of my birth, maybe I just don't remember, or hadn't , erm, popped out yet. The other chap has a genuinely lovely voice too.

Absolutely worth considering, Mardroid - and attending! It's a great event - lot's of drinking, lots of laughs, lots of social interaction with the guests, artwork and merchandise to buy, costumers and props for photo opportunities. The weekend just goes too quickly and I usually feel the post-con blues when going home, but I'd be going home with signed artwork, happy memories and new friends made. I can't wait for May to come around!

I've added some photos from last year's Lawgiver - they're not the best photos but they'll hopefully whet your appetite...! ;)

Thanks Andy! Looks like a riot (in a good way).

I haven't been to any of the others. Seriously considering this!

They didn't go into that theblazeuk.
Just that he is bothers by the fact The Enterprise missed the war while on its 5 year mission in deep space, so his actions might relate to that.
Bird Box.

The basic premise was pretty scary, although it wasn't all that frightening as a film. Quite an original idea though, a very different take on post apocalyptic films.

Very decent film and Sandra Bullock ages very well, although she might have had some help there...

Oh and that's two films recently where I've seen Sarah Paulson, albeit her role was smaller in this film than Glass. She certainly gets around as I've seen quite a bit of her in recent years on Netflix.

I remember her as Merlin* the quirky ghost ghost girl from American Gothic. Remember that?

*Pronounced "maer-lin" by her psychic little brother Caleb.

Glass

I enjoyed that. Quite slow paced, but I didn't find it boring, but judging by the bloke who looked like he had dropped off a couple of seats down from me, not everyone may feel the same.
I don't think it was ever explained how Mr. Glass got out of his cells, though. Maybe they figured since he's a genius, we don't need an explanation.
I have mixed feelings concerning the ending, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
There were a couple of nice little twists too.
Oh, and it was quite funny in places too, often for the right reasons, although I thought some of the action didn't quite work. To be fair, it's not really an action film, though.

Anyway, worth a watch, but make sure you've seen Unbreakable and Split first.
