Quote from: "Tweak72"Gaahhh! I can believe what I am reading. Van Helsing was more ropy than hardcore Kinbaku and in comparison Underworld and the Resident Evil films are practically akin to Shakespeare, Homer, Steven King and Douglas Adams getting together with Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles and Mike Leigh and making a film designed by H.R. Giger, Moebius and Dali with William S Burrows and Oscar Wyld as general artistic writes consultants.

Don't get me wrong I agree... (the idea Dracula must be
killed by a werewolf for example was rather silly.
but I still kinda liked it.  Partly because the cheese made me smile (as well as wince, I'll admit) and the look of the thing was quite sumptious. I also thought the vampire ladies were actually quite scary in places.

It's been a while since I've watched it though. Whether I'd like it or not on a re-watch, I'm not sure. I liked The Mummy Returns but when I watched it again on DVD the other day... I put it straight on E-bay a day or two later.

Oh, and I like the Resident Evil films too. (The first in particular was actually pretty good.) I haven't seen the last installment though.

I didn't realize this was out yet!

So they're not starting all new stories with this issue then? (Apart from Tank Girl of course) I'd have thought with the changes they would have turned it into a jumping on issue.

I might grab this though, just the same. Seems like good value overall...

Quote from: "Tiplodocus"Comics and films are differnet beasts and I think you're asking for trouble trying to make them the same.

I would normally agree with this. Films adaptions shouldn't be too like the comics. When they do they often suck.

Yet....

I really liked the Sin City film. For me it really worked. It's difficult to explain exactly why in this case. Possibly because rather than being a film too close to the comic book, it actually seemed to almost actually be a comic book... just on film. (That might sound the same thing, but there seems to be a subtle distinction.)

I even liked the cheesiness, probably because it was totally intentional.

I admit the novelty factor might be part of it though, and it's certainly not a style that should be undertaken on a mainstream basis.

Film & TV / Re: Clone Wars *SPOILERS*

Quote from: "Adrian Bamforth"Thank god he's finally managed to get rid of those pesky human actors.

Quote from: "Uncle Umpty"New characters in events that happend while the other guff was going on is a better line to take, or new characters set before or after the events in the movies, just something different please.

I think that might be what the live action series will cover to some extent, or at least focussing on minor characters in that universe. I believe it'll cover the events between RotS and ANH rather than the Clone wars, though, but still an interesting time period to cover.

Quote from: "peterwolf"I really enjoyed Van Helsing.I even have a copy of it.

<whisper mode> I did too. </whisper mode>

Actually thinking about it now I feel like wincing, but I loved it when it came out, and found the sheer cheese of it fun.

There's something about the whole homagey black and white introductory bit which still gives me a thrill though.

I think I prefer Kate Beckinsale's performance in Underworld though. The gypsie queen accent thing got a bit much for me, (although ironically the vampires' over-the-top Romanian accents were entertaining.)

I quite liked the first one, although extremely cheesy. (I think with this kind of film it's often the world rather than the main story I love, if that makes sense.) I haven't seen the second. I didn't realize they were even doing a third. Kind of surprised, I didn't think the second did that well... although it sounded interesting to me.

I thought the events in that article
were for real until they mentioned the actual 'flying craft' in the basement.

Blurring reality and fiction. Great stuff.
It looks interesting.

I've enjoyed this show, and I didn't really see what the fuss was concerning Season 2. There was a bit of a reset with Peter Petrelli losing his memory, but apart from that...

I agree Maya and her brother were rather underused. Especially how
quickly they killed off her brother. Part of the point of those two was that their powers complemented each other, something that hasn't been done before.
I agree it is a bit silly not to kill people permanently. That being said
they killed off the artist and the phasing man, but even so.
I'm not keen on the few Kevin Smith films I've seen, (mainly because they seem to have long drawn out scenes of people just chatting, and not much in way of plot)  but I liked Dogma a lot. And to be fair my exposure to the other films were pretty limited.

I don't find the guy himself unlikeable though. And I quite liked the new series he did, Reaper (although I get the impression I might be a minority there.)

Key points of that artical:

1.  He's a comic book fan.
2.  He said the film is close to the original comic.

Even if you dislike his work, that doesn't nullify those two points. Particularly the second.

Cover- wonderful detailed image.
Thrills of the Future: I thought they usually advertised something that would arrive months from now, rather than next week. I'm looking forward to this though. I can't make out what that image is though, although the art looks great.

Dredd- Too early to say, but a nice set up and return to the Mutant storyline. Set up seems a bit predictable, but who knows what twist will come?

Stalag 666- Again a bit too early to tell.  I agree with previous comments concerning similarity to certain WW2 film(s) but that's obviously intentional. I hope they do something new with it.  I like the alien designs, but it would be nice if their uniforms were not so obviously Nazi like. If they were future humans, I'd buy it that they'd design their uniforms on Fascist governments of the past, but these are aliens. (Although I'll admit the outfits suited them.)  Spaceships looked good, but again I'd prefer the alien ships to look more alien on the outside.
I didn't see that twist at the end though. He looked to be the protagonist through whose eyes we see the camp, didn't he? Then, scrunch! Bye bye.
Lots of promise.

Red Seas:  I'm in two minds about this, mainly as I don't quite understand the entire premise (apart from pirates with supernatural stuff thrown in... which I'll admit is a good one.) . Last we saw they seemed to be in World war 2. Now in 1775. Have they traveled through time, or is this just set before? Likely some timey-wimey stuff is going down what with the vikings and all. Oh, and the dog is back with 2 heads, but no body. Eh?

Quote from: "JamesC"I remember having a coversation with my mates while sitting on the roundabout at the local park about what we would do with our last three minutes if the warning went out.
I'm sure most kids at the time probably had that conversation more than once. Morbid!

This ^^^^^ reminded me of a certain scene in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Roundabout and all. Still a powerful scene.

QuoteThe Americans arent even using very much tech in Iraq but having said that Iraq was really the first time that the US has been involved in Urban guerilla warfare on that scale and for that length of time so it has been a massive learning curve for them and the way the invasion/war has unfolded will be studied by military/warfare analysts for years to come.If anything the US has even been underequipped in a lot of instances. On the ground at least.

Well, not the first. There was Vietnam (although technically that was more rural than urban since they  spent a lot of it in the jungle, but it came to the same thing; technically inferior troops using guerrilla tactics and the environment to their advantage...

Then there was the American war of independence where it was the Americans who used the guerilla tactics...

I kind of agree if they'd used air strikes they would have finished thinks quicker (although there would be many terrorists who would still survive in mountains/bunkers etc. Trouble is, what a sacrifice that'd be to the civilian population.

Quote from: "Chris Mardle"I mentioned it briefly.

Bah! So you did Chris, sorry.

No need to apologize. I was just saying is all (I described it as an 'ad' rather than 'Thrill of the future') although that's essentially what they are.)       edit ^^^ Did I slip into Firefly parlance here?

As for the Twisted Tales, I'm fine with these kinds of stories, and I think it's great 2000 AD are willing to take a chance on such things outside the norm.

I really didn't understand this one though, (and 1 or 2 before that, although I liked the early ones.) and I think the writer/artist should make them a bit clearer.

QuoteI try and keep my Star Wars opinion to myself in the main unless I'm with friends... Saying a product is crap or whatever really isn't the best thing for a retailer that sells that product should be doing...

That's the best way to be.

It was just kidding. It was a little Spaced reference really. (Funny scene.)

Don't hire anyone who shouts at kids who ask for a Jar-jar Binks action figure.

Actually... might have to rethink that one.

All the best in your new venture anyway.

I haven't been into that many straight comic shops. There's one in Bromley I pop into on occasion. They seem to put priority on merchandise but they've got a lot of comics and GNs too along one wall. I quite like the feel of it, but I'm not sure of the staff. They seem to just sit there and say little, although no doubt they'd respond if I made an inquiry. I haven't yet purchased anything from them though, mainly as the titles I like aren't there (although I imagine they might order them in if I asked, but that's not really my thing.)  One thing I noticed, all comic prices are in US $.  They have a couple of notices up explaining conversion, and I guess it's better than sticking extra stickers on the comics, but I think they should really put the UK price beneath the comics if possible.
