Film & TV / Re: AVH: Alien Vs Hunter

The guy in the review actually prefers it to AvP cos "AvP takes itself seriously while this one was done for a laugh." Or words to that effect.

I actually rather liked AvP mind you, but I get the impression I'm in the minority. (I'll admit it could have been better.) I've yet to see AvP Requiem though (apart from the first few minutes.)  I've read mixed reviews, some saying it's a step up from the previous, others that it's bad. Most say it's way too dark, that it's difficult to tell which monster is on screen. That's quite a common mistake nowadays.

>I didn't recognise Rose Mcgowan from the close up licking blood off of her broad sword.

Me neither! Actually I didn't know her name and just did a search on Wiki. I remember her now as the girl from Charmed I found least attractive... which isn't saying much. As you say Charmed was rather pants, but the ladies were all rather... erm... charming. (Sorry about that.)  She looks wonderful in those pictures though.

I also found out she's a couple of years older than me. I've gotten to that age where I find that reassuring, as now most actors (and most people) seem to be younger.

I read the first two volumes of Invincible, and I rather liked them.
I couldn't help thinking the 'shock moment' was too out of character though. Definitely took what was originally a light-hearted story to a dark dark place... which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the depth of the switch felt off somehow.
Cover- Grotesque and beautiful all at once. (Is Defoe an ancestor of Dredd? Look at that chin...)

Dredd- Good. I think Dredd lobbing a knife into someone's head whilst blind a bit too lucky mind... but it was good just the same. Nice to see the up and coming Judgette get some action too.

Defoe:  Slower pace, but I'm glad of it. There's plenty of zombie busting to be had in this strip, so I don't mind a breather and some character moments. I agree it doesn't really reflect the cover though, and I like my covers to reflect the contents to some extent. A small gripe though as the cover is beautifully drawn and coloured. And we see a Vizard up close. So the wings are actually suits then? And they need feeding?  This is one weird strip, but I like it.

Sinister Dexter: ... and there's the answer to my question in my review last prog, "Will those bullets strike home this time?"
Get those implants seen to mate.  Good continuation though.

Future Shock:  Great art, and a nice little tale. The twist at the end wasn't all that twisty for me though, but it was a good little story just the same.  I got a great buzz out of the little Blade Runner homage in page 4 panel 3.  See anyone you recognize? Hyuk, hyuk! Nick Dyer, that's the same art droid who drew that Dredd strip a while back right? The one with the Mutie Fardoes? (I'm not good at remembering story titles.) His art has a distinctive style, one that I like. Even those who didn't like his style in Dredd (me not being one of them) should consider that it works well for this story.

Dante- Good as ever. Nice to see that the Captain America type is a more 3 dimensional figure than the slash-em-up terrorist we saw earlier. I also like the way things are heating up.  One thing though, although I like the art, what is it with the shouty expressions? They just look a bit over the top to me, like the shouter is trying to dislocate their own jaw or something. (Elena did the same thing a couple of progs back. Come to think of it, she does in this prog too. "NICKOLAI!")

Poor Holm. (Or maybe he had other plans.) That is the bloke who played Miles O' Brien in Next Generation and DS9 right?

I think I actually saw him once in London. I went to this classy coffee shop for a job interview (not to work in the shop itself, the interviewer wanted to meet there.)  I got there early, and this curly red haired Irishman came into the shop for a minute then left.  Yeah, I know that there are plenty of Irishmen of that description, but if it wasn't him, it was a very close likeness.

Anderson, cos she's saucy, has psi-powers, and dare I say a fine figure of a woman. Very fine when you realize she must be in her 40s at least, possibly even 50 by now (and I heard the psi judges don't get the rejuve treatment.)

Halo Jones, mainly cos of the strip, but I do have a thing for PI Freckles.

What is that object to the left of Dredd poking up in the air?
Diagram found on wiki. (Mainly for those of us newbies who aren't acquainted with the character.)

Lobster Random link
Quote from: "Art"
It's worth having a second look at the pictures of the froggies, and in particular the little froggies being led to slaughter.
I'd forgotton about that. Method to their madness. If you'll forgive the cliche.

Also if you plan on reading Stephen King's Dark Tower books, make sure you don't read the text after the spoiler warning in the Dr Doom entry first. I'm warning because they don't leave much space after the spoiler.
I wonder why Lob was the only one unaffected by those creatures? It appears even the Reporter lady had one, although being a newcomer it was small, so she had more resistance (so I'd imagine.)  Is Lob particulary renowned for having unique mental discipline, or is his brain somehow wired different? (I haven't read any Lobster Random stories, so that's why I ask.) Mind you I get the impression from the wiki stuff I've read about him he's a border line (or possibly of the border) sociopath, so that could go a long way to explaining it.
I recently ordered the first film from Play. I wasn't in a particular rush, but at this price (for the 2 disk version) I couldn't resist...
Clickety click.

That and I rather like the film. Which helps.

Eric Bana is Nero!

Who is Nero?

A wiki look, I think...

If it is a repeat of the BBC3 comics thing, then 2000AD will definitely get a mention as I saw that episode. They didn't go into all that much depth (they had other comics to cover too), but didn't just skim over it either.

Prog / Re: Prog 1596 - The Unknown Soldier

Very interesting prog this one.

The cover-
In hindsight I can certainly see a clue to the twist on that cover, as certain scar tissue is clearly in view. I didn't really notice before hand though which makes it all the more delicious. The twist I mean. Not the claws. (My mind has gone down a rather disgusting route now... I tasted a bit of Lobster claw once, and it was very tasty...) And poor Bless's face.... I don't remember it being that swollen. Ouch.
Dredd-  Nice start to the story. The reference to previous issues is a bit vague though, I'll probably dig out that prog at some point.
I think I know the one though. The one where the undercover judge lady is caught right?
Richard Elson's art is very luscious. I've noticed this before, Dredd's helmet looks, rather different than with many other artists. Not entirely sure how, something to do with the wrap-around visor I think, or the squareness of the helmet in profile. Give it a rather realistic look.

Defoe- I'm really liking this strip. I keep saying that but it's worth saying I think.  James Bond shenanigans this week! (I was wondering, the term 'steam punk' usually refers to Victorian based Sci-fi right? Can the term be broadened to include this, as it seems very apt.)
And the return of a certain pretty face. I think we all know who she really is.
Dante-  Great continuation.
Is it just me or does that panel showing inside the cockpit of the ravenwing remind anyone of a certain scene in Terminator 3?
Sinister Dexter-  Why do people hate this so much? Sure some of the themes are quite old in sci-fi, what with the parrallel universes and duplicates etc, but wrapping it all in a gangster story wrapping surely gives it something new.
I wonder if those bullets Ramone is firing strike home this time?
The Vort-  Lets be fair, THE TWIST isn't the only twist in this episode.
Just look at those photos. Not much of a surprise considering the actions of certain soldiers, but it's an interesting confirmation of the nature of the planet- i.e. it's not just that the EMP is driving them crazy, there is a design at work. And I find it interesting El Spurioso mentions we haven't seen the last of the Vort in light of that. Interesting that Dead Eyes has been mentioned, those critters actually reminded me of beings from that story too.

As for the final twist, I have to admit, I wasn't all that surprised. Someone had a theory concerning this in previous reviews.  It was interesting just the same though, but I'm sure it would have had more impact on those acquainted with the character. My only exposure is a bit of blurb I read on wiki, when I knew he was coming back. So all I know is that he's some kind of hard-case with large claws who has a certain penchant for torture. I'm intrigued though. And the idea of one strip introducing another doesn't bother me in the least. In fact I like the fact it's one big world.  Incidentally, I think maybe Tharg gave away a bit too much in his intro, but never mind.
