Quote from: "Chris Mardle"Yeah, Dark Knight has pretty much been synonimous with Batman from the start. Much like "Man of steel" for a certain other well known character. Not Iron man.

Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin?

Heat-seeker!

BLAM!

Heh, heh. Great Blackadder ref. Lord Flashheart rules!

Ok, I've emboldened my choice.

Jena Makarov vs Angelina DeGriz
Not really a fair choice as I'm unacquainted with DeGriz.

Halo Jones vs Maze DuBois
I don't know DuBois, but the Halo Jones GN is one of my favorites, and I like the character.

Durham Red vs Cassandra Anderson
Tough call. Looks wize both attractive in different ways and I like a vamp, but I'm going with the girl I know.

Oola Blint vs Hilda Margaret McGruder
Not keen on the beard but a great character. And I don't know Oola that well. (One wiki peek, later, oh right shes the woman who poisons people with her husband right? I'll still go with whiskers.)

Galen DeMarco vs Lulu Romanov
Again tough call. I like the the cute freckles but I'll go with the bad girl.

Synnamon vs Blanche Tatum
I don't know either, so I'll go with the spicy name.

Purity Brown vs Miss Marilyn
Again, I don't know either of these, although Purity's name is familiar. So I'll pick her. (if that's a good enough reason.)

Demi Octavo vs Venus Bluegenes
Ok, again... I don't know these characters, but I'll go with the blue girl.

I really showed my ignorance there but I hope that's ok.

Ok, for the second round do we continue to pick 5, or just one from that list? Or do we go through and pick one from each of the 'vs' pairs?

Apologies, if it's obvious and I'm being dumb.

Quote from: "Al_Ewing"To be honest I found Dredd's cancer scare more of a shock revelation. Admittedly, it's the future and they don't seem worried, but still... Dredd has cancer. Shocking stuff.

That's a good point. Also a nice parallel to what happened with Edgar, and good link to the beginning.

Concerning the White Army, if they're planning to conquer that dimension, I'm curious why they provided their technology to the Romanovs. Was it just a ploy to instigate war so humanity would be weakened as a result, making them ripe for invasion. Is this answered in the previous arcs covered in the GNs? If it is, that's ok, I'll probably catch up eventually.

Quote from: "JUDGE TOM"No they are paranormal humans .
The thing is, what makes them paranormal? Mutation could still be the cause. Another cause of paranormal would be magic, but that's hardly the case with these guys. Well... unless one's definition of magic is very loose... It's definitely something going on in the brain which suggests genes are involved.

My answer would be that they are technically mutants, but its so subtle that it just misses the legislation of the past. Remember we're all mutants to some extent.

Isn't there also a variety of mutant that has always been allowed int he undercity? Critters that perform a vital (but icky) function of some kind? I forget what they're called, and I haven't seen any stories where they have appeared. I've seen them mentioned in passing though.

Oh, and honoury mention to the blue lady in the 69ers. (It's not called that, but something similar which skips my memory.) Hot chick kicking butt is always cool, especially if they're a funny colour. She missed the list, because a) I've only read one story with her in, and we didn't get to know her much, and b) because I didn't think of her when I made the list. The latter is closest to the truth, as quiet=enigmatic=rather cool. But I'll let the list stand for now.

Rafe. Raphaela.. I think that's her name....

I'm a relative newcomer so I haven't read that many 2000 AD characters. But from those I have been exposed to, (if you excuse the terminology)

Halo Jones (Ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances.)
Candice (I think that's her name. Halo's mate who appears in the first book. I found her a highly amusing character.)
Judge Anderson (Cheeky, sexy, and superpowers. Nice combo.)
Durham Red (I haven't read any of her strips, this is more a looks thing if I'm honest from the various pictures I've seen. And saucy vamp grin.)

The last I find difficult to pick. There are two Dante women I have in mind, Lulu Romanov as a feme fatale, and Dante's Mongolian body guard lady with the twin curly swords (I forget her name.) I'm going to cheat and have them as a joint fifth if I may. If I mayn't replace Durham Red with one of them as it's more a lust thing with her and I haven't read any of her material beyond reviews. She could be really rubbish otherwise for all I know.

I like Kingdom a lot. The second series anyway (I only caught the last episode or two of the first, so I can't really judge. That was when I started reading the prog.)

I think it works best as an occasional story though. Not that I find it boring at all, it's just something about that epic feel and the wandering nature of the protagonist that works well being fed in small doses. Almost as if the gap in between were part of the story or something. (It's difficult to explain what I mean, it's more an emotional response.) As long as the gap between each isn't too long though, (i.e. I wouldn't mind if it were a bit more regular.)

Quote from: "TordelBack"Except I'm not sure it's actually the Nazis that Dad's Army lampoons - they don't show up very often at all, unlike the stalwarts of the British middle classes that headline each week.

Agreed. When the germans did turn up in Dad's army they were actually fairly scary.

'Allo, allo, on the other hand.... that poked fun of all of us.

Received mine today.
I wasn't sure why the twist (which I have to admit I didn't see coming) would be such devastating revenge mind, but I suppose, from Dredd's persective, its the fact that she escaped justice which is so unbearable.
As for the ending
I wondered if it meant he would join the council of nine too, but then I figured it could just mean that he'll continue being what he always has, a model incorruptible judge. (Lead by example meaning, look at how I do things, rather than literally grabbing a leadership role.)
The rest... all good I'd say.
I thought the white army guys/gals would be more difficult to kill though. If they have the same tech as the weapons crest, wouldn't they have the healing factor? Still, I imagine healing factor don't help when you've had your head mashed in or a bullet through the heart. Unlike Heroes where Peter and Claire will survive a large object in the brain once it's removed...
More questions with Defoe, with the new groups that keep getting mentioned, but I like this strip.

Sorry, I probably should have put this in the off-topic section really.

They sort of did a remake of Jason and the Argonauts already, but I think it was a straight to Sky mini-series. (It had Jolene (T'Pol) Blalock as the strange priest lady with weird make-up Jason pairs with later. Oh, and the chap who play Baltar in the new BSG appears in it too.) I didn't watch it all the way through, but what I saw was a bit meh.

General / Empire's top comic characters.
11 July, 2008, 09:08:03 PM
Here it is.

Judge Dredd scored pretty high at number 7. I'm curious where they got that colour picture of nippley Halo Jones with the big snake at number 18 though. I don't remember the snake from the book at all.

Help! / Re: cheap or free office packages
10 July, 2008, 06:07:05 PM
Only problem with OpenOffice I've found (and it might be corrected now) is that you can't access files in the latest Word format.

Not much of a problem really, it just means saving in the older format (i.e. Word 2003 etc.) when porting files(i.e. Word 2003 etc.)

A great, great package though. That's the one I use, and in my opinion every bit as good as Word. In fact I prefer it.
