Because today both my boys went film club after school, meaning my wife and i had eight uninterrupted hours of peace, for the first time in seven and a half years.

We spent it lounging on the sofa in our pants, with coffee, chocolate biscuits, and some dvds. We watched Vault of Horror (amicus, tom baker) and just when it had finished the postman delivered Torture Garden (amicus, burgess meredith, peter cushing, jack palance) through the door, so we watched that. Then The Bat (vincent price), which was hilarious for all the right reasons, then wrapped up with Zombieland, which she'd not seen.

Then i picked the boys up and found they'd been watching Back To The Future on the big screen, and had loved it.

Then we ate pie.

Actually, this belongs in the Drokkin' Fantastic thread. What's happened to that?

SBT

Best. Day. Ever.

Can't wait til my kids are all old enough to go to film club (or any club) and I can do that!

Film & TV / Re: Dexter - Worth a punt?

This season has really picked up steam and am loving it now. Julia Stiles is  a revelation to me. I'd kind of written her off as another has-been ex-teen flick starlet , but she's brilliant in this and I could see her going on to bigger and better things on foot of her performance here. By the end of the episode entitled "Take it!" the waters are nicely muddied up and we look all set up for some interesting final episodes.

Thank you for mentioning Lysette Anthony's breasts. Thank you very much. A google search has thrown up some lovely results! :)

Krull's on the list!

As is Black Hole - now. Another gem I'd forgotten!

SBT - that's great! Japan is similar to Canada in that respect and my wife has no problem with the ghosty/spooky stuff. But unlike you, we havent introduced it from an early age so my kids are a bit nervy about horror stuff. Might have to wait a wee bit longer before Jaws gets an airing! :)

Oh yeah Howard the Duck was brilliant.... Deffo gotta track that one down.

Surprised by the mention of showing Jaws/The Fog/Poltergeist to your 6 year old SBT!! Can't see how they would go down well with mine....or maybe I'm just being overprotective!! I do very clearly remember seeing American Werewolf in London when I was about 10 or 11....didn't bother me too much but the next day before it went back to the video shop, I put it on and made my 7 year old sister watch it.........and she was traumatised by it for weeks. Man the shit I got into over that!!!!!!!

Great stuff here guys thanks for that.
Yep, the original Star Wars trilogy I should have included, only very recently got my kids watching them and they love them.

Inner Space is another one I'd forgotton, good call.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit has popped up a couple of times...I know I saw it but I cant remember it at all so might be worth checking the bargain bins for.
I couldnt possibly get Turner and Hooch though...only because it will have me balling like a big baby!!!!! :)

General / Classic (read - 80's) kids movies

Now that my two eldest kids are at an age when they can sit still for 90 minutes and concentrate on watching an entire movie, I'm putting together a DVD library for them, and as well as all the new, recent movies that they love, I'm trying to mix in some old classics that I used to love when I was a kid (in the wonderful 80s!). So far I've picked up The Neverending Story, Labyrinth, Gremlins, The Princess Bride, ET, and The Monster Squad. (The Monster Squad was a bit of a push, watched it last night with my 8 year old daughter and it was a bit more mature then I remembered, a good bit of swearing in it, talk of tits and virgins etc. Very good though, even got me all choked up at the end!)

Can anyone recommend anything else in a similar vein that I should try and round up? I've been told Dark Crystal is great, though I've never seen it in its entirety. Remember loving Krull as well - is that along the lines of Princess Bride or was that aimed more at teenagers? I seem to remember there being some pretty scary monsters in that one?

All suggestions welcome!
