General / Re: How did you first get into 2000ad?
26 April, 2017, 07:51:04 AM
Got into it via Judge Dredd, first ones I read were colorized versions of Judge Death story and some others (Eagle comics), and the great Bisley drawn Dredd/Batman story. Then of course came to find 2000AD is full of great stories, and is still going strong.

This was around 2004 that I read those, and got into 2000AD soon after.

I'd love to see more great adaptations, but unfortunately with the setting and material of the stories, it does require a bit of a budget. Or going with a Troma (Toxic Avenger) or classic Doctor Who style B-movie look, with people in wacky make up as aliens etc, which would be fine with me, but maybe not that marketable.

Dredd (2012) is a great movie, but they did the best they could there with a few hallways as much of the movie's setting. An even lower budget follow-up would be very limited in what they could do, since even just going from one place to another in Mega-City One may be pretty high budget to do convincingly.

But that said, I'd take a set in one room Dredd movie if that's all I can get. Tarantino made it work a couple times.

Carlos is the king, one of the best visual storytellers ever. That said, while I love his work, it's all personal taste, I can see why the style may not appeal to everybody.

For example, I don't like Ron Smith's style, the way he draws faces etc, just to me looks uncool. I still respect his work though, Graveyard Shift is a classic etc, and he's really good, I'm just not into Ron's art style.

For Carlos, I always liked his work, but around Necropolis to me I really felt he sort of "smoothed out" a bit and for me that is some of his best looking stuff, around that era and on. Though the different coloring styles later on vary a bit. Anyways, love ya Carlos!

Dredd doesn't always agree with the law, or those in power, I don't see the problem in that continuing to come up. Even if the system did cease to function, you could continue telling that story.

He can't claim "I am the Law" unless he is acting not like an individual,

The beauty of it is, he can. He says he's the law, but he's not actually a robot who only follows the law. It may be a bit of a contradiction, but that's who he is. He doesn't just follow orders, he was raised in that environment so the Book of Law is almost his bible, but he's shown over the years that he also listens to his gut. We know that he does act as an individual, that's why everybody in the city and all the Judges act like he's somebody different and notable. Often times over the years they don't seem to know what Dredd will do or where he'll fall on an issue, because he isn't just a walking talking law book. Even if he likes to think he is.

And the system the comic is based on has lasted decades with that character growth and depth, hasn't been a problem.

The robotic self-checkout stations at pharmacies never work, they don't trust you're putting the things in the bag and stuff! The damn machines are going to rise against us...!

Klunk and co area good example of something I feel has been missing from Dred stories for awhile now. Reoccurring none Judge characters. Mrs. Gunderson has been appearing less frequently these last 5-10 years, for awhile it looked like Sensative Klegg would be stepping up.

It's a large oart of what makes Dredd such a great strip, IMHO.

Agreed there, could always use some more Max Normal too, classy gent.

Quote from: positronic on 19 April, 2017, 09:26:00 AMOkay, then apparently I misapprehended. You actually don't like Dredd, and would prefer that they kill him off (as long as he isn't replaced by a clone).

I don't dislike Dredd, I just think that there are some chinks in the armor.

Quote from: positronic on 19 April, 2017, 09:26:00 AMI mean, they've done the adamant foundation-shaking thing, had him resign, take the long walk, replaced by Kraken posing as him. Not sure what you want, another re-tread of that? You can't do a story like that too much.

It's more like a story about revelations and the grayscale between cause and effect. I skilled writer can bring out some new nuances in already explored themes.

It's been shown. How often can you dwell on stories about the doubts and chinks? If you do, then you render him unfit to do the job. That's the point I was making. The Judges are meant by design to be inflexible and hidebound by the Law. It's the whole point of everything, without which the entire system ceases to function.

Dredd doesn't always agree with the law, or those in power, I don't see the problem in that continuing to come up. Even if the system did cease to function, you could continue telling that story.

Plus, 30k readers is a lot more than many long running US comics. Robert Kirkman's Invincible had around 11,000 for example, the current Ninja Turtles comic has about 13,000 a month, etc. Daredevil sells around 30,000 for example.

But how much more different than Fargo is Dredd? He looks like him and his doubts seems to stem from the fact that Fargo didn't want the totalitarian rule to last forever.

After sowing his wild oats Dredd doesn't put a bullet in his head or run a protection racket like Rico.

When did Dredd sow his wild oats? As in coitus?

It's as if Dave and Nigel have noticed that the standout sequence with the Dark Judges in the past 30 years was the bit with Mortis chasing Giant's gang through the decaying ruins

Gotta love Necropolis, great stuff.

Thank you to John Wick Chapter 2, best John Wick film of all time! Redonkulously epic. It's almost a crime how cool this movie makes being a classy hitman look.

(I forget who got greenlit to direct the Button Man movie, I say get this guy!)

Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)

My kooky idea is for an atypical pacing, the first third of the movie being just Dredd nonstop taking calls like in The Grayard Shift and with stuff like Punks Rule etc.

Anderson has a few escalating visions during that time, then bam Judge Death shows up. I kinda like how originally he just showed up with no foreshadowing iirc and they didn't know what was up, so just a dab of foreshadowing will do.

That sentence is what we're discussing! If you believe what you wrote, it honestly is disgusting to me, that is all.
