Prog / Prog 2254 - Photo Bomb!
16 October, 2021, 08:27:20 PM
Still as you were - still not a bad thing at all.

Dredd - there's echos of Ennis here, working hard for a way to SHOW. HOW. SPECIAL. DREDD. IS. We know, we get it. He's a titan, we read it. So the 'I AM THE LAW' thing shouldn't have worked... yet Grud help me I couldn't help up enjoy it - even while knowing I shouldn't.

The Diaboliks demonic high octane action and eatting kiddie poison. Its black hearted fun.

Pandora Perfect is just pitch perfect fun as we break into song, dash to escape and wake a moon. LOVE IT!

Scarlet Traces continues with its space combat theme and this time we drop ship down to the action.

bloody hell we're 4 for 4 with the hi pace, action adventure again, even if one does take a break for a song and dance. All of which serves to elevate The Outs comedic hi-jinks and sharp dialogue driven adventures, but those dark undertones lace through the fun MARABUNDA! indeed. The perfect end to a neigh perect comic.

Books & Comics / Comics we're excited about in 2022
15 October, 2021, 05:55:28 PM
Well this is probably a little early and I'm probably being a bit optimistic that this will show given how far ahead its been announced BUT via 'Wait What?!?' I've been directed to a story I'd missed. Kurt Busiek is returning to his creator owned work at Image and that means

MORE AUTUMNLANDS !!!!!

YAYYYYY!!!!

https://bleedingcool.com/comics/image-unveils-2022-slate-for-the-kurt-busiek-universe/

I mean announcing it will be out in Autumn 2022... I'll see you in the Comics We're Excited About 2023 thread maybe!

Well what do you know we've hit the semi-finals and I suspect that there are going to be some very tough calls to be made for some folks. For others some of these might feel very straight-forward.

Our second semi has the last remaining none 'Epic', but a thrill that for many exemplifies the series. Mind in the other corner we have one of 2000ad great origin stories for any series. Tough calls all round one suspects

As ever all you need to worry about is which of the following you prefer:

The Killing - more info

VS

Portrait of a Mutant - more info

Just reply in this thread naming your favourite of these two stories at the beginning of your post (or use Bold tags so I can spot it easily) and say what you like about these wonderful stories after that.

Match ends early on the morning of Saturday 16th October and the winner gets a place in the semis.

... there's a spreadsheet to make following easier... if you fancy. If not, don't worry just VOTE!!!!

I've tried to explain the finals here.

What on Earth is ALL of this?

Why on Tharg's Earth head are we doing this?

Any questions, just ask as ever - and have FUN!

Oh and my 'More info' links... well I don't say how much more and they get pretty wonky at times!

General / Outlaw v Rage - Bolt-01 Cup - SEMI-FINAL 1

Well what do you know we've hit the semi-finals and I suspect that there are going to be some very tough calls to be made for some folks. For others some of these might feel very straight-forward.

In the first semi we have two epics from the 'golden age', both held in very high regard by so many but which one of these will win the day?

Prog / Prog 2253 - Empire state of emergency!
11 October, 2021, 05:04:52 PM
I mean they've worked that tagline haven't they!

Well its pretty much as you were isn't it - which given we were in a good place is no bad thing at all.

Dredd remains a solid action adventure thrill. A bit more harking to the past from Rob Williams, personally would like him to rope that in a bit but this one is undeniable fun - of little more.

Diaboliks is a dark and nasty action adventure thrill this week, but the dark tones do hold a little more. Its hellish hard not to love this one.

Pandora Perfect remains a frothy, zesty action adventure romp, Pandora escapes and visits new worlds and this story mines the world of fun (see what I did there) - its just delightful.

Scarlet Traces becomes a very effective wary action adventure this week, all explosions and counter attacks on martians. Ian Edginton doing what he can sometimes forget to do - so not tell. Excellent episode.

The Out remains the strip that defies the rest! Its a wonderful episode again as Cyd finds a new way to go out to try to reclaim her missing bag and... well nice cliffhanger. Its hilarious and just fantastic.

So yeah another winning Prog and an up tick in Scarlet Traces mean its improved event on a fine Prog last week. RESULT!

Empire State of emergency though TUT, even I struggle with that one!

No messing about anymore, we're straight at it now. No holds barred, no faffing around with tables and groups, or over complex piffle under the guise of qualifying play-offs. No, we're down to the simple purity of a one against one, single match - TO THE DEATH... well I didn't say we'd got rid of melodrama! Two go in, you vote, the one with the most votes gets a place in the semis, simple as that.

Prog / Prog 2252 - Depth Charge!
04 October, 2021, 08:48:23 PM
So if last weeks Prog was a bit of a steady Eddy second part plateau we learn a little more about or thrills this time and where they are heading and how they will get there.

Dredd hhmmmm not too sure, its just more FIGHT. Rob Williams need to do a Dredd were he shows that he knows you don't need to smash Dredd with bigger harder baddies to make a good story. Its fun, action packed and has some good crankin' up the tension... I'm just not sure what it has to say and why it feels a need to say it.

Diaboliks shows us how its done, chilling, yet amusing, a quick dose of angelic violence to keep us thrilled and then blister end to keep us driving through. Wonderful stuff, gets the balance just right and is moving along nicely.

Scarlet Traces stunning, stunning art and while the two scene tale is still very steady we do seem to be going somewhere.

Pandora Perfect is blistering along, as we've seen in previous stories just as Pandora seems to have it all in hand, the tale has a sting in it and the heist has a hitch. And since this is a big and longer story the hitch... well it shows it can be upscaled. This is fantastic, fun, frolicing and delightful and agains wonderous visuals.

The Out - arh The Out, its not changin' for anyone and it has no reason to do so. This episode is just brilliant as the new theme of exploring humans escaping to the edge is quickly explored and its done in a darkly hilarious way. In three tiny vignettes we see what Cyd gets what she wishes for and might just regret it. Fantastic, FANTASTIC stuff.

So yeah three triumphs and the other two ain't bad - so I think we're happy with this one. Its got a real punch compared to last time.

General / List of series in 2000ad and Megazine
04 October, 2021, 06:39:49 AM
You sometimes you start something that you figure will have its challenges but when you dig into it raises so many questions, just so many. For reasons that probably aren't that hard to guess I'm trying to put together a list of all the series to have appeared in 2000ad and The Megazine - aside from Judge Dredd. Simple as that...

Sheesh, oh that it was that simple. So you exclude Dredd, but then do you include America and Deadman in that exclusion? You decide to split Rogue into 'Classic' and 'Friday', but how do you handle Flesh. You decide to bunble Megazine run into 2000ad runs, so all Anderson is together, but is Hershey different to Judge Hershey (I'm going yes)... etc etc.

Anyway I've used the work of Broodblik from a bit over a year ago (thank you sir) as my basis, updated and merging a couple of list he did BUT I suspect a few of you have lists of you own. So if you are willing to share I could use them to cross check things.

I'll also ask a few question over the coming days...

What can we expect from the last two matches in Group 4, well it seems likely that Beast will be consigned to the bottom of the group, though it may shock things and Moses Incident needs a big win to fight for a place in the finals, assuming the other ties goes as expected... all to play for!

Final matches here and while the other match today is a winner takes all... well aside from a perfectly useful runners up spot... this one is for pride. Both these thrills are out the tourney mathematically unable to qualify now, but no one wants to come bottom if the group right?

Final ties of the Group and the real interest on Group 1 is on this tie as these two thrills compete for second spot, which will be enough for a place in the Quarter Finals.
