Other Reviews / Dead Man Walking

Well on my parent run this weekend I finished the Progs from 2003 and it finished on a bit of a damp squib, a line up I wasn't massively keen on, heck even a John Smith story I didn't go nuts over in his Dredd 'Meatmonger'. The highlight at the end of the year though was a complete surprise, 'Dead Man Walking' which I knew nothing about and which I have to say I really enjoyed... well kinda.

Up to about half way much like 'Synammon' I was just finding it an adequate distraction, fine to look at but nothing Earth moving (at least the creators of 'Synammon' had upped their game since 'Bison'). I had two big problems with the strip, the led suffered from being a woman that really felt like she was written as a man with tits, as can happen with 2000ad females characters at times. Secondly the future swearing word 'Shiv' was being used way too much and beginning to do my
own man tits a bit. That was it really, that was all I could find to get excited about, it all felt very safe and fimilar.

Then half way through with only the slightest of hints before hand it turns itself on its head and becomes this really fun little story thats got a great idea behind it and it doesn't look back after that... well to be honest its not even that much of a twist its a 2000ad twist. Taking something that feels normal and average and turning it just enough to make it feel special, different and a damned sight more interesting. After that I loved it. Looking forward to reading it again some time in the distant future and knowing whats coming up seeing how the first half works.

Oh and they stopped using the word 'Shiv' as much.

Back from the dead.

The comics on the wall at the back made me wonder. Still you could always take a camera around the shop and pretend then I wouldn't look so daft?

Prog / Re: Prog 1679: Review.
04 April, 2010, 06:45:04 PM
Well got back from a parent run and rather than wait for a quiet moment when I could read the Prog in the peace it deserves I crashed head long into it while feeding my daughter. The reason, it was a relatively clean tea (phew) and its so bloody good at the minute as I sat there at the table trying to explain that only stuff that lands on the matt gets to passed up again that I thought well I'll just read Dredd... 45 minutes later both the Prog and tea were over.

Its bloody superb at the moment and this Prog didn't have a single duffer in it, not only not a single duffer but a single story that wasn't excellent. I loved my first part of Damnation Station which really was excellent and the rest I'd already been enjoying in quite frankly stupid amounts. When I finished Dredd I thought this ain't going to be topped but then I got to Dante. Chuff me it was beautiful, painfully beautiful as you just know it ain't going to end like that, but God I loved it.

The next thing I'm going to say is a dangerous, silly thing to say, kinda like when you come out the cinema and you think an amazing film you've just seen is in your top 10 of all time but you know you can't say it cos time and distance may well led to re-evaluation... but right now and after having read almost all the Progs over the last 2ish years I want to say that the Prog at the moment is about as good as its ever been...

but I won't cos that'd be silly wouldn't it...

Better than great.

The address listed on the website is:

33 The Wicker,

Sheffield.

S3 8HS.

England. UK.

Does that seem correct to you?

Address defo right as for names after going there for what 8 years and chatting away happily the funny thing is we're way past the point were I can ask their names and I don't know them. One might be called Paul but that can be said of many men!

Other Sheffield shops that I don't know that much about are

Forbidden Planet Sheffield
12 Matilda Street
Sheffield
S1 4QD
Phone: 01142 769 475

and Galaxy Four though their really a Doctor Who specialist.

There's also 'the last Picture Show' in Meadowhall but they focus on Movie stuff these days.
