Film & TV / Outpost

Did a search and was surprised to find that this hadn't been discussed too much, well except Peter Wolf saying it made his life spug.

I actually quite enjoyed it. The similarities to 'Fiends of the Eastern Front' are pretty superficial, or rather possibly swamped by so many other horror movie tropes as to not stand out particularly. The film suffered a little from
ghosts being a little too all powerful and ill defined (though there was a line of dialogue that tried to excuse this) making the ending if refreshing a little telegraphed. There never was any real hope.
Still fun characters, neat little premise, looked great for a low budget film and always entertaining.

Help! / Laptop advice
14 August, 2009, 03:48:35 PM
Ok so the Laptop got knicked as discussed elsewhere and so we're looking for a replacement. Its pretty much for everyday use and from looking at Which? online I think the thing we're after is Dell Studio 1555 2.4 for about £750 (come on insurance I know the old one wasn't worth that but chip in a chunk?).

In an ideal world I'd have one that sounded ok playing CDs BUT they don't seem to exist (unless you get an Apple and I'm an Apple virgin). That aside not very demanding users, don't play games, watch video ok and would like to be able to play with drawings BUT really I'm so unadvanced there its academic!

So yeah any tips for the best £750 laptop?

My ideal strip would be one written by me... I suspect many of the rest of you might feel otherwise but hey a man can dream.

News / Re: Dave Gibbons interview in The Guardian.

The fact that I now know Dave Gibbons is responsible for Comic Sans (if indirectly) has made we reevaluate everything he has ever done!

QuoteHow much better would Defoe have been with Mr Tickle in it? The answer is all of the more better.

There is huge potential in 2000AD characters vs Mr Men characters.  :P

Dredd vs Mr Grumpy could be a classic. Check out Mr Grumpy's frown:

It's like Dredd's.  ;)

So now we know what Dredd looks like under the helmet!

Books & Comics / Re: Liberty Meadows

Its hoped that issue 38 will be out by the end of the year (though how much faith to place in that is open to debate). Very early preview here.

I love Liberty Meadows, though it was better when Frank Cho wasn't quite so obssessed by 'cheesecake'. Its hilarious. Its never going to be monthly again I suspect, nor bi-monthly, not while Cho has so many more commitments elsewhere (so stop buying his Marvel stuff already!) he has always said however that he will continue working on it.

If you pop over to this Apes and Babes website forum there is normally a thread doing the rounds asking for it back that'll point you back to the latest news.

Apparently there was plans for a TV show, for good or bad, that is now in development hell.

Welcome to the board / Re: Mind if I join the gang?
13 August, 2009, 08:23:12 AM
The fact that you're one of Dredd's great artists is besides the point. What makes you welcome to the board is we need more people who've suffered the indignity of being called Colin here.

Not read the issues so I'm really curious is Barry Windsor Smiths art (did he use the full title then?) at this stage enhanced by colour? I'd certainly feel that his later work would be better in black and white.

Corgette is pretty good fried and added to a salad.

I always struggled with courgette until my wife started to fry them. Now glad to report no problem.

(TINLA)as each item is less than £300 it should be covered by contents insurance. You'd be looking to add the amount of the collection to the amount your contents insurance covers. You can get seperate cover for collections but its usually not worth it.

The trouble is unless you name it on the insurance (with a guess a list?) how do you prove ownership?

I'd be interested to know what the going rate is for a full collection of 2000ads, Megs, annuals and specials. Not that I intend selling, but I do wonder if it needs to be declared on my insurance. I don't want to have a discussion with a loss asjuster about a pile of progs that are nothing but burned paper...

Any ideas?

I've wondered about this this week. I've not got a full set (missing 1-40) BUT to replace even that would take a bit of doing. I'm thinking having been burgled at the weekend at adding my comic collection on to my household insurance just to avoid the hassle if anything ever happened (touch wood and all that).

I'd suggest if you have a full set its defo worth insuring as the first few issues alone, condition depending I suppose have got to be worth a few hundred quid?

The definition of a no-brainer.

I see Empire continues a run of research fail: "Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore's series for Image Comics has been running (...) since 2003, and currently stretches to ten paperback collections" - Moore was co-creator and the artist for issues 1-6, which is only the first volume.  Wikipedia box-outs are a good first stop for research, but really shouldn't be the last.

Spoken like a true librarian (though like so many when rushed I can fall into the Wikipaedia trap. Oh the professional shame)

Also from Empire

"zombie graphic novel series"

It's a comic series why's it so hard to say!

Probelm is, I've just ordered all of 2008, and I'm now inching my way through the whole of 2006, so I'm going to start running out of "new" material soon(ish).

Arh but thats what the re-read is for! I wonder sometimes if I'm going to end up in a perpetual re-read now as my the time I get through everything it'll be so long since I read the early stuff I'll think... uh haven't read that in ages...
