Books & Comics / THe Book Depository
14 January, 2013, 12:31:54 PM
Anyone buy regularly from The Book Depository? I've ordered 4 things from them in the last month and 2 have been damaged in a 'dropped before packaging' way. Packaging seems inadequate too - stuff Amazon would put in a box (The Parker Martini edition, Manara volumes) they put in the bare flatpack-plus-tiny-overlap style packaging not suited to the weight of those volumes.

Quickly moving to the 'not worth the cash saved dept'.

Sadly (and sadly a week too late for Dredd DVD) it looks like HMV is about to kick the bucket with a large death-rattle sale tomorrow (friday 11th). One near here  has 2000AD tshirts, the Dredd Soundtrack and (if you ask) might have the DVD in.

Sorry if anyone has friends or family work for them.

Hurrah!

Fine choices all.

(of course the recount will show none of the above scored and Yeowell's Drag Dante was the actual winner).

Finally got around to seeing Battle: Los Angeles .

Hmm. Kinda like watching your hyperactive nephew play Call of Duty (now with added aliens!)

And why does the director insist every 'quiet' scene is shot through/past something? Was this meant to by 3-D?

Would guess so, much like the hostage scene at the start of Dredd, AKA 'why are we looking at this through a burger stand' in 2D.

I know that vzzbux - i do the image for something else and view 2012 as part of the years covers rather than 2013 - mentioned it in the post.

Am sure everyone can blank out muddy-dredd-tharg and substitute Bagwell's Kirby Tharg in their minds eye.

Here they all are in order (annual dispute over which side Prog 2012 / 2013 falls on notwithstanding).

Five great strips all bringing something different to the party. Four top script droids, five outstanding artists and a 'oooh' thrill of the future too. Much as I love Bagwell am sorta sorry to see him on this and not another John Smith installment. Partly because I'm itching for more Indigo Prime, partly because Mark Harrisons' three outings last year hinted at a return to regular contributions from this stunning artist.

Red Seas is fairly easy to grasp even for the most disinterested... they're off to fight the devil. Nowt difficult to remember there.

Can understand getting a cover by an artist you particularly dig at an above standard price but that?

The script for Brendans strip made NO sense.
if PSI can randomly detect murderers they pass from guilty thoughts the what use is wiping your memory for the escape only to then tell yourself what you did. The next PSI Judge you walk past.....
Still, least the art was nice. Anyone know if Len O'Grady was (uncredited) assist on the colours? They didnt click for me as well as the Spiderman / Dredd / Zilk colouring.

The main story still does nothing for me, the art choice is wrong, the storytelling clunky. Did like the Anderson mind-reading splash page tho.

Anderson and Killer Elite for me.

Not a fan of Burns on Dredd (too much pensioner about Joe) nor Carroll's take on Dredd.

Fuso's strike two and three were glaringly obvious, his Dredd on the final page an entry into 'how many broken bones would you need to look like that?'. You can see Yeowell in his art as well as Jock and Dom but there must be serious doubts as to where the better panels are coming from.

the floppy was great although that was probably nostalgia. They have been very good this year - ratfink and Download tales especially.

looking forward to Reaper bk ii and hope Fay Daltons contributions to that make a return too.

Always enjoy these Evil Pants.

clearly you're wrong about DHP tho! (Honestly, I've sorta bored of it, last 3 have sat unread).

General / Re: Storing Progs/Big Megs

Not the conventional approach but I bag a month's worth of Progs (with end of years going into the January bag and any other Dec. issues going into the Nov. bag) together then store them in a solid 'open' style solid desktop file folder. Makes it each to grab any particular years worth and they fit nicely one years to the width of the the folder. God knows I'd have no patience to open and close individual bags when looking for something or re-reading. Plus its 11 bags a year rather than 49 odd.

1st) 1811 - D'Israeli  - (okay, why is Frank still standing when the heavier taxi is blown away? WHO CARES!)

2nd) 1781 - Henry Flint - like last December's 'explosion Dredd' this just SCREAMS 'comics' in the best way.

3rd) 1786 - John Burns - Glorious. How we'll remember Dante. Top of the World.

Special mention to Ben Whilsher's crowded covers (1768, 1792, 1796) which may not get many votes but, like Henry Flint, have a great sense of composition to grab the eye.

Dammit we need 10 votes.

Yeah but War Machine was pretty damned good. Incredible art from Will 'whatever happened to' Simpson.

Currently storyboard artist on Game of Thrones and (very slowly) developing a creator-owned vampire book whenever he gets enough time to work on it...

Cheers

Jim

And maker / fitter of Natalie Portman's knickers for Black Swan.

Truely some Droids go on to greatness.

Great to see Critchlow back in the Prog. He's a fantastic artist.
