Anderson - the scene with the head of PSI was weird - two judges who haven’t seen each other in some time (and can barely know each other as the last time they met was when one graduated the academy) joking around like besties while the head briefs them on a dangerous mission.

Oh look, yet another female psi with cropped hair buddy for Casandra.

Not good people, not good.

The page count of the meg went up when American Reaper was in it so ‘it took up too many pages’ arguments are a bit redundant.

Unless you just don’t like it.

I enjoyed it a lot, it was silly but fun and amazing to look at.

Great strips mentioned in the article - wish Frazer could find a way to do more Lilly.

I think the last time I enjoyed an Anderson run was when Alan and Boo Cook were the team. The stories seemed self contained and fun / zippy. Since the Dowling (?) suicide Anderson I’ve barely kept up with it - something seems missing in her world in terms of distinctive support characters and enjoyable wider world when taken out of the ‘one off adventure’ story.

If I was Tharg I’d move her to the Meg and assign one proven script droid to build her a world - Williams or abnett would be ideal - one that’s more than ‘anderson and another emotional empath’. There is no reason Anderson can’t have a supporting cast equal to Dredd to it never seems to happen. Indeed Lawson has surpassed her as the prime non-Dredd Judge fur all those very reason imho. Of course I could be wrong.

All the more reason to enjoy Franks review.

That Dredd was a classic.. oh could be a new ancillary character..... nope. Still a facist brutalist state folks. Love it. Oor Ken has that Wagner knack of making you love the strip and MC1 while ramming home how unjust it is. Brilliant.

New batch of these (un signed no doubt) has just gone live - final run apparently.

Announcements / Re: 2000 AD - The Ultimate Collection

It would be a shame if it hasn’t as it’s really an excellent series. The standard is far better than the Mega Collection. These are a lovely format to have so many great 2000ad series in. I almost wish I was reading them for the first time.

What about lobster random people

What strikes me about reading back is that things like Caballistics and Lobster Random are 15 years old.
I guess it’s a separate question but is there a  ‘transition’ phase where Dredd / Dante / SinDex carry the prog before we get to a slew of ‘modern’ 2000ad strips like Lobster, Asylum, Caballistics that can hardly be told apart from say Brink / `Scarlet Traces / cradlegrave despite a decades difference in time? Is it an art thing (computer colouring finally bedding in) or a droid thing (Abnett / Spurrier / Williams / Eddington). In a way Prog 1001 still feels very different to me from 1400 in a way 1400 doesn’t from 2100.

Charlie’s own vampire series has just kicked off.

Would love to see him tighten up his art again, working on TWD really took his style in a very loose direction to accommodate the schedule.

In streaming-land all you get is 3 seasons because you don’t get any new subscribers after season 1 / 2.

Poor The Tick...

See I’d say 970 is still not great. Kev Walker’s painted stuff was always not great for me (and I love his later style on Dredd), Wireheads and Vector 13 weren’t great and I can’t recall that rogue at all save to say rogue never recovered from looking like it was in the same universe as Chronos Carnival.

Plus I hate that cover design - easily the worst in 2000ads History.

I can appreciate people saying The Pit is turning a corner but you wouldn't hand 970 to someone and say ‘start here’.

Reading the excellent prog slog that ended in the low 700s made me grimace that it ended around the time 2000ad got....hummm.... pretty poor. I stuck with the prog till the low 900s then bailed till around 1450. It struck me recently that the odd strip aside 2000ad has been pretty awesome since then (2005).

I’ve started a re-read from 1400 (Wagner / Cam Dredd (Drekk City). Caballistics Inc, Flint on ABC Warriors, Strontium Dog and Bec and Kawl) and it’s all (mostly) great stuff that stands up 15 years later. Even the megazine (still in the era of charley’s War / hell trekkers reprints) is excellent with Wagner / Weston Dredd (Six), Ranson Anderson, cursed earth Koburn, Simping detective and Black Siddha.

So the question is - given 2000ad definitely had a low period (you can argue when)... when did it get good again? Properly good. Four out of five strips if they were new next week you’d lap them up good?

He’s actually like a monument to show-not-tell. Dear old monkey is desperately telling the younger audience what is going on ‘oh no we’re about to crash into the planet’ and Arsehole Jones is like ‘shut up, you’re a robot’ every.single.time.

It’s great.

Picked this up with the subs discount and what a great read it is too. Turbo himself is a bit of a rude dull twat but the art is great - some excellent aliens - and the rest of the cast seem far more interesting / fun (loner and kitten in particular).

One gripe would be the lack of artist identification - would have been nice to have given credits to each story even if just on the index. There are clearly more than a few artists involved and giving them recognition would have been appropriate and, frankly, informative.

But yeah it’s silly, retro but really enjoyable. Defo down for the next collection.
